S. ADDISON GAGE, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEIQIMERS FOR SEWING-MACHlNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,043, dated May 21, 1872.
being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a view of the blank for the adjustable plate before being bent up. Fig. 2 is a view of the blank for the guide-plate before being bent up. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the heminer. Fig. 4 is a side view of the same.
This invention has relation to hemmers for sewing-machines, and consists in the construction, out of sheet or plate metal, of an adjustable device by which any desirable size of hem may be laid, substantially as hereinafter described. 4
In the construction of this hennner I cut or stamp a sheet of metal, A, to the form shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, which approximates the shape of the letter L. Near one end I cut a slot or aperture, A, for the insertion of a thumb-screw to attach the plate A to the clothplate of the sewing-machine. The cars a, on either side of the T- shaped tongue b, I bend around, as shown in Fig. 4, and raise the shank or neck I), so that said ears may rest on the cloth-plate. The tongue I) I bend over so that it shall overlap the ears a previously totheir being bent. After the ears are set the tongue I) will lie parallel to and between the ears and the plate A. The I shaped plate F I use as an adjuster, and for this purpose I bend it over so that its ends shall be near together. It will be seen that the end f has a notch, g, cut in it, producing ears which are bent down so as toclasptheshankb andtormagauge. Notches 9 are cutso that parts of the ears g will pass under said shank and produce a better clasp.
NV hen properly arranged the plate F passes between the ears a and under the tongue I), the projections a of which are bent around the edges of the plate F as guides.
In forming the hem the edge of the cloth is folded over the free end of the plate F and its edge drawn over and under the tongue W. The tongue N, as shown, turns the edge of the cloth under to form the seam. The width of the hem is regulated by adjusting the piece F that carries the hem, turning tongue b to or from the gauge-lips or cars 9 WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the hemmer herein described, composed of the plate F having the ears g plate A having the shank b tongues Z) 0 ears to a, and recess 0, when all are constructed and combined as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
