Description
J. CHABALA.
CAR BRAKE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 9, 1918.
Patented J une 2-5, 1918.
gnuvnl'vt JOHN CHFIBHLH To all whom z'tmay concern Be it known that I, JOHN CHABALA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuddy, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Brakes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in car brakes and an object of the invention isto provide a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with mine cars, and it isaan object, of the invention to provide a novel and improved brake which may be readily and conveniently operated by the driver of the car."
a The invention also has for an object to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a block positioned between a pair of wheels together with shoes carried by said block and engageable with the wheels and wherein air operating means is directly engageable with each of the shoes.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved brake of this general characterincluding a pair of shoes coacting with adjacent wheels together with a retractile member interposed betweenthe shoes for maintaining the same in inoperative position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved car brake whereby certain 1mportant advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating a mining car having a brake applied thereto constructed in accordance w1th an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the hanger and coacting block as herein employed; and
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of one of ljlll all l l l JOHN GHABALA, orounny, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-BRAKE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentgdl J 111111119, 25, 191% Application filed February 9, 1918. Serial No. 216,278.
the rock arms and coacting lever or pedal as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings B denotes the car body provided with a pair of parallel and transversely disposed supporting axles 1, and mounted on the opposite end portions of the axles 1 are the wheels 2 of a conventional type.
Depending from each side of the body B at a point intermediate a pair of wheels 2 is a hanger 3 having a longitudinally disposed slot 4 in its upper end portion through which is directed a member 5 extending outwardly from the side of the body B. By this arrangement it will be perceived that the hanger 3 is capable of endwise movement in a vertical direction in addition to a swinging movement.
Secured to the lower end portion of the hanger 3 is the block 6. Pivotally engaged with the upper portion of the block are the oppositely directed shoes 7 substantially semi-circular inform and which overlie the adjacent pair of wheels 2. Interposed between the shoes 7 and suitably connected therewith, is a retractile member 8 herein disclosed as a conventional coil spring, which serves to normally maintain the shoe 7 out of engagement with the peripheries of the wheels 2.
Pivotally engaged with each of the shoes 7 is a rod 9 having its opposite or outer end portion pivotally engaged with a rock arm 10 rotatably supported by the side of the car adjacent an end thereof.
As herein disclosed, the rock arm 10 is carried by the operating lever or pedal 12. Upon depression of the lever or pedal 12, either by hand or foot, the shoe 7 Will be set and at the same time the block 6 will be elevated and caused to frictionally engage both of the wheels 2 to further effect a braking action.
It is preferred that the outer end portion of each of the rods 9 be slightly curved or offset as indicated at 14 so that when the lever or pedal is at the limit of its downward movement, the coacting shoe 7 and block 6 will be locked in set position.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to, be obvious that a car brake constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some-change and modification Without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: 1. In combination-with a vehicle body, a pair of supporting wheels at a side of the body and in'longitudinal alinement, a block positioned between the wheels and supported by the body for swinging movement and vertical movement, a pair of oppositely directed shoes engaged with the block and overlying the wheels, and means engageable with each of the shoes for causing the same to engage the adjacent wheel and to elevate the block to engage both of the wheels.
2. In combination with a vehicle body, a
pair of supporting wheels at a side of the body and in longitudinal alinement a block positioned between the wheels and supported by the body for swinging movement and vertical movement, a pair of oppositely directed shoes engaged with the block and overlying the wheels, means engageable with each of the shoes for causing the same to engage the adjacent wheel and to elevate the block to engage both of the wheels, and means ooacting with both of the shoes for normally maintaining the same in a released position. 7
3. In combination with a vehicle body, a pair of supporting wheels at a side of the body and in longitudinal alinement, a block positioned between the wheels and supported by the body for swinging movement and Gopies of this patent may be obtained for vertical movement, a pair of oppositely directed shoes engaged with the block and overlying the wheels, means engageable with each of the shoes for causing the same to engage the adjacent wheel and to elevate the block to engage both of the wheels, and a retractile member interposed between and engaged with the shoes for normally maintaining the same in released position.
4. In combination with a vehicle body, a pair of supporting wheels at a side of the body and in longitudinal alinement, a block positioned between the wheels and supported by the body for swinging movement and vertical movement, a pair of oppositely directed shoes engaged with the block and overlying the wheels, levers supported by the side of the car adjacent opposite ends thereof, and rods pivotally engaged with the shoes and the levers.
5. In combination with a vehicle body, a pair of supporting wheels at a side of the body and in longitudinal alinement, a block positioned between the wheels and supported by the body for swinging movement and vertical movement, a pair oi? op oositely directed shoes engaged with the bloc and overlying the wheels, levers supported by the side of the car adjacent opposite ends thereof, and rods pivotally en aged with the shoes and the levers, the end portions of the rods engaged with the levers being downwardly directed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
