To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Janus THOMAS THAD ones Euas, a citizen of the United-States. residing at Southern Pines. in the county of Moore and State of North Carolina. have invented new and useful Improven'iehts in Tramway-Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a tramway-carriage or traveler and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for moving the carriage and to raise and lower the loadby a pair of cables thus omitting the third cable usually used in devices of this nature.
Another object of the invention is to provide electrically operated means for gripping the cables to prevent movement of the carriage and to hold the load in raised position. p
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described. illustrated in the :wcompanying drawings and specificallypointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and iii which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the device.

As shown in the drawings the carriage is formed of a pair of plates 1 spacedapart and suitably connected together by the bolts 2 and the s'l'eeves 3. Between these plates and adjacent the upper end thereof are located the grooved wheels 4 for supporting the device on the able A. These wheels are preferably provided with ball bearings and rotate on the axles 5. 6 represents a similar pair of wheels located adjacent the lower edge of the device over which the lifting cable B passes. These wheels are mounted on the axles 7 and are also provided with ball bearings. The top and bottom of the carriage are formed of U-shaped plates 8 and 9, these plates being secured to the plates'l in any suitable manner. 10 indicates a stationary jaw connected to the plates 1 in any desired manner and located imwhich the back of the reduced part of'the movable jaw engages. The front of this part is provided with the teeth 12 with which engages the teeth. on the segmental lever 13, pivoted at 14 to the plates. The other end of this lever is ivoted tothe armature 15 of magnet 16 w ich is pivoted at 17 to the lates. Current is carriedto this member rom the wire C b means of the trolley wheel 18 and the wire 19 connecting said wheel with the magnet. A similar arrangement of parts is provided for the cable B, said parts consisting of the stationary and movable jaws 20, guide 21, segmental lever 22 and the magnet and its armature 23. Current is supplied to the magnet 23 from the wire D by means of the trolley wheel 2-1 and the wire 25. The wires 19 and pass through suitable insulating plugs 26 carried by the top 8.
The carriage may be moved toward-the left by any suitable means. For instance a cable A may be connected to this end of the carriage. As this is well known I have not shown this means on the drawing.
When the carriage has been moved to the desired position to receive the load, current is passed through wire C to the magnet 16. This will cause the armature 15 to move so as to rock the lever 13 on its ivot and thus raise the jaw 11 to grip the ca Is A and thus hold the carriage against movement on said cable. The hoisting drum is then started so as to wind up the cable B to lift the load. After the same is raised to the proper height current is sent through the wire D and so into the magnet 23. Thus the movement of the armature will rock the lever 22 to cause the jaws to grip the cable B to hold the load in raised position. The magnet 16 is then deenergizedto release the cable A and the carriage is then pulled to the desired position. It will thus be seen that just two cables are necessary as the third cable may be omitted.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparen I desire it to be understoo that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A device of the class described comprising a frame, supporting wheels carried thereby for engaging the supporting cable, hoisting Wheels thereon engaging the hoisting cable, gripping means for each cable, each including stationary and movable jaws, teeth on 10 said movable jaw, a segmental lever having teeth thereon engaging with said teeth, a magnet, an armature therefor connected with the lever, and a trolley connected with each magnet.
