-Be it known that I, WALTER L. CONWELL, residin at Montclair, New Jersey, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slidable Metallic Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin which illustrate the preferred form of t e invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious. that various modifications thereof will" our to persons skilled in the art.

My present invention relates to metallic doors, which while readily adaptable to genV eral architectural purposes, are particularly suitable for use in railway cars. An object is to provide a door, which shall be constructed of incomplex parts, relatively few in number and kind. Most of said parts are characterized by their ability to be kept in stock, and merely cut to size to give :the desired dimensions to any given door. o It is further purposed to so correlate the.

From the foregoing .and the drawings, vit is' clear that said basic door structure does not constitute a complete door structure, and door-edge-formin members are applied to the channels, 10o said door 'edge-outlining frame to yform com onent parts thereof, to close the-sides of sai channels and to provide the door with suitable door edges. To conform to good manufacturing practice, -the strips 15 are pressed in a wellknown and simple manner as units, but the corner pieces 1,6, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8, are economically produced in two pieces 16I| and 16",l the former being provided with a lip 16, which laps the inwardly extending fiange of part 16", and is spot welded there. to, as indicated atl c in Fig. .7.

Within this second Ydepression is placed a panel-retaining frame, comprising sub stantially flat retaining strips 18 and corner pieces 19, the vcross sections of which are 'shown to be rectangular and of materially greater width than thickness. It is, however, evident that these members, and also those of the molding frame, may partake of other sectionsl than those shown, and, when the removable panels 8 have a suitable transverse disposition, be given the contour of any classical or other molding.

Screws 20 are usually of the type known as French screws, as are all the screws vused in the door which are visible, this adding tothe finished appearance of said door. v
The doors illustrated in the drawings beingof the sliding type, a suitable hanger is provided. As shown in the formsof Figs. 1 'and 12,l it may comprise a bar 21 practically 'ce-extensive with the width of the door, and
having approximately its lower half invserted between the upwardly extending, `more narrowly spaced, portions of the Z- shaped flanges of the channel 10 paralleling the upper edge of the door. At the same altitude, and on reverse sides thereof, the "bar 21 is provided with raceways 22, shown as running the length of the bar. The raceways are designed to receive properly supported and retained balls, arranged on opposite sides f hanger bar 21 to furnish an anti- -vfriction support for the door.'

The bottom edge ofthe door is furnished with a guide-stri 28 zo-extensive with the bottom rail 4. cally arranged flanges which lap thelowermost flanges 9 of both side sheets/1, screws 29'passing through said guide stri flanges, the speciied flanges 9 and the 28 in place. The latter also possesses a downwardly projecting tongue 28EL ada ted to slide in a groove in the usual thres old plate (not shown).
When the door is usedk in a railway car employed in a subway or ytraction service, where hasty entrances and exits by passengers is customary, there is an ever-present danger of impulsive people attempting to leave or enter the car as the door isV closingl Far too frequently thisresults in the hand of the eager person bein Acaught lbetween the edge of the door and its jamb, y
or between the edges of companion doors, where a pair are used. And, if said person is on a platform, .he is in imminentperil of "being forced to run with'the car, with the ultimate possibility of being thrown and sustaining `serious injuries or loss of life.
To avoid such contingencies, the outer vertical edge of the door is supplied throughout its length with a, finger guard 30 of relatively soft and compressible material. 'llhis finger guard may easily be constructed, say, of rub er sheet bent to have a til-shaped cross section, and with the borders of its open side arranged each to lap one of the anges 9 which outline the side sheets 1v along this side of the door.

The positions of said rubber blocks are away from any hand or clothescatching locations, and said blocks take up the jar incident to closing the door.
Along the other or inner vertical edge of thev door, a finishing strip is applied, and it `comprises an outwardly exposed channel member 34 and aninternal anged U-shaped channel 35, both -shown `as equal in length Ato the door height, though channel 35 may comprise a plurality of short pieces united vto channel 34.
The outer or exposedchannel member 34, preferably of drawn steel, and the free borders of its vanges are reversely bent inwardly at an acute angle to the remainder ofthe flanges, and the internal U-shaped channel member 35 is a pressing, by choice, and its anges are outturned and adapted to engage the transverse portions of the Z- shapedianges of channel 10, paralleling this edge ot the door. See Fig." 4.
Both channel members 34 and 35 are preferentially y intermittently united by 'spot' welding, as indicated at g in Fig. 11, resulting in the equivalent of a single member.
In applying this linishing strip, .one of its ends is so registered with an end of its associated vertical channel 10 that said strip may be slid into place, whereupon it becomes interlocked with the specified channel 10. rlhe outturned Hanges of internal channel member 35 lap the transverse portions of the 'es of channel I0, the outer edges of said anges and of flanges 9 of the side sheets 1 abut the web of channel member 34, and the deflected portions of the ianges of channel member 34 bear against said ianges 9 of side sheets 1 and the shoulders outlining the outer edge of stile 2 'on this side of the door.

The form of door shown in Figs. 12 and 13 vis constructed much like that illustrated in the preceding figures, except that a single glass or removable panel is shown, and both vertical edges of the door are furnished with finishing strips comprising channel members 34 and 35, the finger guard being omitted.
It is apparent that I have-devised a door easy and inexpensive to manufacture, composed principally of parts which may be produced in general lengths and cut to size for any particular door, and which is thor-` oughly durable and attractive in appearance, and poessing the numerous advantages hereinbefore set forth.
It should be clearly understood that the door edgeoutlining frame, and even the panel opening outlining frame, are not necessary to the construction of a door intended for certain uses, but when the door is likely to receive hard and careless usage, the introduction of these frames into such a door is necessary to insure great prolongation of plementary door edge-formingmembers and a panel-receiving member secured, respec tively, to the attachment means of the first and second mentioned frames, said door edgeforming members being constantly maintained inseparable from said door edge frame in a direction transversely thereof, a panel, and retainin means therefor.

In a metallic oor, door edge and panelopening frames, each comprising separate fitted strips opposed to the strips of the other frame, said str1ps having spaced flanges, the flanges of the strips in one frame being oppositely directedto those of the opposing strip of the other frame, opposed unitary door side sheets connected to and connecting both frames, complementary dool` edgeforming members and a panelreceiving member secured to and connecting thev flanges of the first and second mentioned frames, respectively, to close the space between said flanges, a panel, and retaining means therefor.

In a metallic door, opposite door side sheets forming registering panel openings, and a molding frame having corner-pieces comprising two parts, each part having lange secured to the panel-.opening-out ing border ol' lone of said side sheets, both parts extending toward each other to meet in a planeintermediate and parallel to their spaced flanges, one part having a lip lapping and united to the other part. 10. In a metallic door, an upper door edge frame member provided with upwardly directed flanges having depressed "portions having flanges and shoulders conformate with those of said frame4 member, a top door edge-closing member partly pocketed within said yflanges and extending thereabove, cover strips inclosing said side sheet flanges and shoulders and having portions` parallel with and. spaced from said side -sheet anges, filling pieces disposed between the latter and said cover strip portions that are spaced fromA said sheet flanges and means securing the parts together.

In a metallic door, door edge and lpanel-opening frames, the former having open edges about its perimeter and the latter having flanges directed toward the cen ral portion ofthe door, integral door side sheets :formed to simulater the. characteristic parts of door sides connected to opposite sides of said frames, door edge-forming'members closing said open edges and a panel-receiv ing frame lapping and connected to said flanges.
