Be it known that I, HENRI. SANGUINEL'II, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Bakersfield, in the county of Kern, State of California, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Pumping. Power, of which the-following is a specification.
This invention relates tov machinery for pumping wells and. the like and it is an object of this invention to provide an improved form of pumping power, simple and economical in its construction, and strong and durable in operation. There are 'several objects of my invention which will appear from the following detailed. description of pumping power, embodying: the inventioni For the-purpose of-typifyingand'indicating my invention, and. not as; limiting it, I refer particularly to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan of a preferred form of pumping power, 'accordingtio my invention; and Fig. is a vertical central section'of the same. i In the drawings I show my preferredform of mechanism including, and mounted upon, a base IOfpreferably'constructed of reinforced concrete. The base 10. isfpreferably in the form of-a niono-lithic symmetrical cross, comprising a pair of crossed members 11 intersecting centrally and standing at right angles to each "other. These members 11 may be reinforced in any desired manner, as is indicated at 12. At the outer ends of each member 11 I place a base casting 13 adapted to receive the end thrust of a strut 14. There are four of these struts 14, one on each base casting; and these struts extend upwardly and diagonally inwardly to a central point where they carry the center bearing casting 15, carrying the main bearing 16 for the vertical shaft 17. The struts 14 are preferably composed of steel I-beams; but may be wooden beams; and at their lower ends, where they bear upon the base castings 13, the wedges 18 may be interposed. These wedges may be used to tighten up the struts and also to adjust them nicely in position to adjust the bearing 16 to its proper central position. Cap plates 18 may be used at the ends of the beams for the wedges to bear against. Over each one of the struts, and connecting between the central bearing casting 15 and the four base castings 13, I place tension rods 19. The. base castings. 13. may. be anchored to. the concrete base 10. by any suit able means, asby anchor bolts 2.0; and, if desired, these anchor bolts "may be made a part of. the reinforcing system, in manners well known to. the art..'
The vertical. pump. shaft. l'Z is carried at its lower? end in a suitable bearing'25; and upon its upper end it carries. the. usual pump} eccentric 26.' One. of the features of design of my mechanism is. that its total height is relatively small the, whole mechanism, being relatively low. and the upper. bearing being preferably not more than siX feet from the base. This design lends itself very readily to great solidity and strength of structure.
Whereas it has heretofore, been common to mount. the lower ends of the struts let on a rectangular base; on the. other hand I; mount these struts. upon a base, comprising the two. directly, connecting members, 11 which directly connect and extend directly between the opposite ends. of the opposite, struts. Thus, I have connecting. base members which form tension, members between the opposite ends of: opposite. struts, and which distribute? the strain. from one. strut to, the. opposite one. At the, same time, making thebasel of: concrete, I-have a heavy stable basenot liable to: be. displaced. by any overturning movement. On account of the low and: stable structure, strong. and not liable to be displaced, I may and do preferably put the pump eccentrics above the frame and above the main bearing instead of below and within the frame as is now commonly the case. Thus there is no interference of pumping lines with the pump power mechanism.
Another improved feature of my design is in the mechanism used for driving the pump shaft 17. In the form of pumping power now commonly in use, these pumping shafts are driven by spur or bevel gearing; and the rotational speed of the pump. shaft is very much influenced by any unequal loading of the mechanism. For instance, if there are more wells hooked up to the eccentrics 26 on one side than on the other, the mechanism has a tendency to run at a varying speed during each revolution. I utilize a worm gear 30 on the pump shaft 17, driven by a worm 31 on a driving shaft 32 mounted in bearings 33 on the base, This driving shaft 32 may be driven by any suitable means. For instance it may be driven by a belt connection 34, from a pulley 35 on shaft 36, which shaft may be the shaft of a motor or any other driving means. Or the motor may be directly connected to shaft 32, the speed reduction being then made entirely in the worm gearing. The worm gearing is made to be preferably non-reversible; that is, a rotational force applied to the pump shaft will not rotate the drive shaft. Consequently, the mechanism will continue to run at an even speed, in spite of any unequally distributed loading.
For convenience of attention, etc., I may provide a platform 40 on which the operator may stand when attending to the upper parts of the mechanism; for oiling and keeping these parts in proper condition. The main pump shaft bearing 16 may have a packing gland 16' at its lower end to hold the lubricantin the bearing 16.
Having described a preferred form of my invention, I claim:
1. In a pumping power, the combination of a base embodying a pair of crossed members extending directly between opposite points spaced about a center, struts extending from the outer ends of the crossed brace members diagonally inwardly and upwardly to a central point above the base, a central bearing carried by the struts, and a vertical shaft in said bearing.
2. In a pumping power, the combination of a base embodying a pair of crossed base members, in the form of a symmetrical cross, four diagonal struts based on the ends of the cross members and extending diagonally inwardly and upwardly to a central point over the center of the cross, a central bearing carried by the struts, and a vertical shaft in said bearing.
3. In a pumping power, the combination of diagonal struts extendin downwardly and oppositely outwardly from a central point, and a base embodying horizontal members extending across and connecting the opposite lower outer ends of opposite struts,
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of diagonal struts extending downwardly and oppositely outwardly from a central point, and a base embodying reinforced concrete horizontal members extending across and connecting the opposite lower outer ends of opposite struts, said members forming tension connections between the opposite strut ends.
5. A pumping power, comprising in combination a base embodying a pair of crossed base members, in the form of a symmetrical cross, of reinforced concrete, four diagonal struts based on the ends of the cross members and extending diagonally inwardly and upwardly to a central point above the point of intersection of the base members, a central bearing carried by the struts, a vertical pump shaft in the bearing, pump eccentrics on the shaft above the bearing, a worm wheel on the shaft below the bearing, a drive shaft on the base, and a worm on said shaft meshing with the worm wheel.
