An enlarged portion 27 of the breech bore 26 contains a suitable charge of explosive material 28 for projecting the torpedo 10 as may be found desirable.
The lower or base portion 29 of the breech 25 is integrally formed with the barrel 23 while the upper half 30 of the breech is hingedly connected as at 31 with the lower half thereof. Suitable retaining and locking latches 32 are provided between the two portions 29 and 30 of the breech 25, whereby the breech may be maintained closed with the torpedo 10 and the charge 28 secured therein when the cannon is loaded. An exploding member 33 such as a spark or firing plug extends through the breech member 30having electric circuit wires 34: leading thereto, whereby the charge 28 may be exploded at any desired distance from the cannon 22, though it will be obvious that any other form of exploding member for the charge 28 may be employed if desired.
