To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that l, JOHN K. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of regon, have invented a new and useful lm orovement in Concentrators, of which the followingis a specification, reference lbeing had to the accompanying drawings.
Lll/fy invention relates to a class of devices used generally to separate free valuable metals and concentrates from the mill crushed ores.
`The objects of my invention are to provide a device with mechanism which will separate free valuable metals from the slimes and from each other to a certain extent, and to separate concentrates from the slimes. This is accomplished by pre-determined .movements of parts of the device. li accomplish these objects, as well as others, by the construction, combination andA arrangement of parts, illustrated in vthe accompanying drawings which form a .part hereof.

A is a frame. B .is a shaftstandard. .C is a` horizontal shaft and D apulley rigidly secured on said shaft. Within the frame A is a vertical shaft 7 pivotcd at its lower end in a .supporting bracket 8 which is secured to the frame. The shaft 7 has vertical 'feathers 7 in its `upper part. Upon the upper end of the frame A is arigid plate 9 `recessed in its upper part and provided with circular ball racesI 10 therein. Balls 11 are placed in `the races. The shaft 7 extends through a bearing 12 in the plate 9 to a desired height. The plate 9ialso has aV vertical central circular shoulder 9uof a c3pecfeation of Letters Patent.

suitable height. The drive shaft C is rotatably mounted in the standard B and in the bearing 8 of the bracket 8. Upon the inner end of the shaft C a beveled toothed gear 13 is rigidly secured in position to engage a beveled toothed gear 111 secured on the shaft 7. A toothed wheel 15 is rigidly secured upon the shaft C between the pulley. D and the bearing 8. A circular turn' table 16 is rotatably placed upon `the balls 11. This table has circularly disposed cam` jaws 17 in a suitable position within its upper part, and gear teeth 18 in its lower circumference in position to Iengage the teeth of rthe wheel 15. The table 16 also has a central opening 16 through which the plate shoulder 9 extends. Above the table 16 a buer disk 18 rests upon the shoulder 9. This disk is retained upon the shoulder in rigid position by the bolts 18. lt has a central opening through which the shaft 7 extends.
Above the table 16 a cam ring 19 `is placed. The ring 19 also has cam jaws 20 circularly disposed in its outer lower part in .position to engage the jaws 17 vof the table 16. Above the ring 19 and-upon it rest adjusting blocks 19 which may be in one or more layers. Upon the blocks 19 rests a horizontal wheel 21 havinga hub 22. This hub 22 is of suitable form landextends upwardly a desired height, with an exterior thread 22 on its upper part. The wheel 21 has lower stationary spokes 23 and upper adjustable spokes 23,. hinged in the hub at their inner ends, their outer ends extending through slots 24C in therim 25 of the wheel. The hub 22 has interior slots 26 arranged so `the vhub may slide upon the shaft feathers 7. The feathers in the slots also retain the hub on the shaft .7 in rotatable position. The hub is further provided with an interiorly threaded sleeve 9.7 vertically adjustableon the above mentioned threaded part 22 of the hub, the sleeve Q7 having a shoulder 28 on its lower end. An upper-spoke box 29 rests upon the shoulder 28 and has a cover 29 secured to the box by bolts 29". Tt is within this spoke box that the upper spokes arehinged. Their outer ends are retained in the rim slots by Y.

Thismakes the wheel as a whole an `in- The `upper spokes 2?/ .supportuponthem a concentrat ing surface mat 32 of suitable material such as linoleum. The upper end of the shaft 7 is threaded. Upon this part of said shaft is a threaded sleeve 33 having a shoulder 33 on its lower end. A clamp collar 34 is placed upon the shaft below the sleeve 33. rlhe sleeve 33 supports on its shoulder 33 a horizontal cross 35, from the arms of which depend springs 35. The lower ends of the springs 35 are attached to eye bolts 36 in the cover 29. A pipe 37 extends from a source of water supply to a semi-cireular position at a suitable height above and near the central part of the mat 32. The pipe 37 is olosed'at its end and has vertical outlets 38 in the lower part of its semi-circular portion. A conveyer 39 extends from a source of material supply, and has its spout in a suitable position near the central part of the mat 32, said spout being also placed with relation to the place where the pipe 37 discharges water upon the mat 32.
A series of receiving boxes 40 are arranged in a circular form below the outer rim. of the mat 32, and in a suitable position to receive the discharge of valuable material from the surface of the mat 32. The boxes are provided with outlets 41 and plugs 42 for the same.
The operation will now be substantially described. lt is apparent that the wheel 21 is adjusted at a suitable height with relation to the boxes 40 by means of the blocks 19. Also that the pitch of the mat 32 is arranged in a predetermined manner by adjusting the sleeve 27 as desired. Power is then transmitted to the shaft 7 and wheel 15 through the intervening mechanism. The wheel with the mat is then rotated at a predetermined speed. During this rotation the table 16 is also rotated independently and also at a predetermined speed. The table, by means of the cam mechanism, raises the wheel and the mat surface and allows the wheel to drop, thus imparting to the material on the mat a precipitating movement. Arrows indicate direction of movement of the shaft 7, wheel 15 and table 16. Water is thereupon discharged upon the mat near its center for the distance of the semi-circle of the pipe 37. Slimes are discharged upon the mat from the conveyer 39 in a suitable position with relation to the place where the mat receives the water. rlhe water iows outwardly over the concentrating mat surface by gravity and to some extent by centrifugal force iinparted by the rotating mat.
The lightest of the valuable metals are discharged into the nearest box in line with their outward course and the heavier ones are discharged later in other succeeding boxes according to the speed with which they proceed outwardly. Practically all of the tailings or refuse flows outwardly and is discharged into the first or nearest box in line with its outward course. No attempt is made to save concentrates in this box, as they7 would be of so small value, but it might be arranged to do so. IThe plug in this box is removed nearly the whole time of operation. The tailings are collected in this box to facilitate their discharge throuoh its opening toward a suitably located dump. The succeeding boxes receive the concentrates according to their weight, the lightest into the next box and the heavier ones in order in the following boxes. Such tailings as may get into the succeeding boxes, after the first one, are in such small quantity that they are disregarded and not further separated from the product intended for the smelter. The plugs in the concentrator boxes are removed to drain out the water when it is desired to remove the entire material contained in the boxes. The material however, in practice is scooped out of the boxes, after sufficient accumulates, and while water is in them and they are continuing to receive material. The material is stored at once on removal, preparatory forvsmelting. It will be understood that it is the rotatory, combined with the jolting movement of the mat, which accomplishes the result thus disclosed and enables the operator to separate and collect concentrates of different grades of value as well as of weight, which is an important function of my device. The concentrates are discharged into the boxes in like manner. The separated metals and concentrates are then removed from the boxes and constitute the iinished product of the concentrator.
If desired to have the shaft 7 rotate at a different speed, or once in a given time with relation to the cam mechanism, different gear or intermittent gear may be substituted for that shown.
The function of the spring mechanism is to balance the mat so that the cam mechanism may be controlled and caused to impart only a gentle, even, jolting motion to the mat, and the material thereon, and thus prevent valuable material discharging over the boxes. The springs will of course impart some of this motion to the mat by their own direct action. The buffer disk 18 prevents the cam jaws from receiving upon one another the impact of the drop of the wheel 21, las this impact is received upon the buffer disk 18 I claim:
1. In a device of the character described the combination of, a frame, a rotatable horizontal wheel in the frame vertically movable on its shaft and comprising in its construction lower upwardly inclined spokes secured in a rigid rim, an interiorly threaded sleeve above said spokes upon the wheel hub and adjustable vertically, the sleeve having a shoulder on its lower part, a hub box supported on the sleeve shoulders, upper raceo l. spokes hinged at one end in the hub box and slidably arranged at the opposite end in and upon the wheel rim, further, a mat secured upon the upper spokes, a water conveying pipe terminating with a discharge end with spray openings in semi-circular form at a suitable height above and near the central part of the mat, and a cam mechanism comprising'a circular turn table provided with circularly disposed cam jaws in its upper part and a cam ring above the table provided with circularly disposed cam jaws in its lower part oppositely disposed to said table jaws, the cam ring being rigidly secured to the wheel hub in a pre-determined position in a manner that a jolting motion shall be imparted to the wheel during' the rotatory'engagement of the cam table with the cam ring, substantially as described.
2. lln a device of the character described the combination of a frame, a rotatable horizontal wheel in the frame, a circular mat upon the upper part of the wheel, means in the wheel to arrange the mat with its upper surface at a pre-determined outward pitch,
means to convey water upon the een! to produce a jolting motion of the mat, vertical dependent springs above the wheel having their lower ends secured to the latter., substantially as described.
3. ln a device of the character described 35 the combination of a frame, a rotatable horizontal wheel in the frame, a circular mat upon the upper part of the wheel, means in the wheel to arrange the mat with its upper surface at a pre-determined outward 40 pitch, means to convey water upon the central surface of the mat in a pre-determined place7 a cam mechanism arranged below the hub of said wheel to raise and lower the hub in a manner to impart a jolting motion 45 to the wheel while rotating, and a series of receiving boxes arranged in circular position below the rim of the wheel and in re lation to the pitch of its surface to receive into the boxes the outward flow of the 50 lightest substances into the rst or nearest box in the line of outward flow and the heavier substances in their order of weight into the succeeding boxes serially opposed to the outward flow of said substances, sub- 55 stantially as described.
