Be it known that I, ALBERT PETER, a citifull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The present invention risparticularly directed to the valve member of a sewer trap,
the object sought being to provide a valve which shall positively seal or close the upper end of the waste pipe and -thus e'ectively prevent the backing of the sewer water into the trap and flooding the premises around the trap. A lfurther object is toprovideja construction which shall be sensitive and in! stantly responsive to the pressure of water against it so that the back water may be choked 0H before it has a chance to pass by the valve. The advantages ofthe improvement will be better apparent from the following detailed description in connection with the accompanying drawingsin which- Figure 1 represents a middle vertical section of a conventional bell trap having my invention applied thereto, the valve being shown seated or closed; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the valve dropped to its lowest or open position; Fig. 3 is a top plan, with portions in horizontal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a bottom plan of the valve detached; Fig. 5 is a rear end view thereof; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the valve with the hinge portion in section; and Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modiiication whereby the valve may be attached to existing traps.
Referring to the drawings, and for the present to Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, 1 represents a catch basin from which leads the usual waste pipe 2, the said pipe projecting a suitable distance above the basin bottom as shown. The basin is provided with the usual grating 3 from which depends the bell 4, said bell being disposed directly over the waste pipe 2 and terminating with its lower edge in a plane below the plane of the upper end of the pipe so as to form a water seal as well understood in the art.
In the present embodiment of my invention, the intake end of the waste pipe 2 is closed by a perforated screw cap or filter plate 5 as shown. Disposed on the inner wall of the pipe 2 below, and in proximity to, the plate 5is a lug 6 provided-with a U- shaped recess saidl recess receiving the hinge pin or cross ,member 7 connecting the vertices ofthe triangular ears 8, 8, carried by or formed on the float or disk valve V,

linger. l0, this engagement serving to arrest thev'al've and prevent the same from dropping to a vertical position. In other words the valve is maintained in an inclinedL position so as to facilitate the lifting thereof by the water when the water from the sewer backs into the waste pipe 2. The valve in being lifted naturally will first swing to a horizontal position about the hinge pin 7 as anaxis, as indicated by the dotted position in Fig. 2, after which the water will ick up the valve bodily and force it into iim engagement with the plate 5, the hinge pin 7 under the circumstances being lifted slightly in its recess r as shown in Fig. 1. Thus the valve V is seated against the plate 5 not by an oscillating movement about the hinge pin 7, but by a bodily rectilinear movement or motion of translation in a direction at right angles to the plate 5. By reason of this last l imperforate portions of the filter plate, it
follows that a water tight joint is formed between the plate and valve and no water can back into the catch basin 1.
To apply the invention to existing waste pipes 2 not provided with a lug 6, as shown in the modification in Fig. 7, I cut a thread on the inside of the waste pipe above the catch basin 1, and into the end of the pipe thus threaded I screw a bushing 1l one end of which is closed by a filter plate 12, the bushing being provided with a marginal flange a which limits the distance to which it shall be driven into the pipe. In this modification the lug 6 is formed on the inside of the bushing, said lug being provided with a Vrecess 7", a 'finger 10, and the 'valve V being formed with ears 8', hinge pin 7 and web 9, these parts beingidcntical With the corresponding parts in the form first described. In the modification, the member '-12 takes the place of the member 5 in the form first described. It is'- obvious of course', that the structure is susceptible of further modiication without a departure from the nature or spirit of the invention.
