SERVICE TAP-VALVE FOR: GAS-MAINS.
I citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Service .Tap- Valves for Gas-Mains, of which the following is a specification.
' The object of my invention is to afford a simple, cheap but efiective service tap valve for gas mains, one, a safer connection than the means ordinarily employed for the purpose because better adapted to, resist the strain to which such service connections are frequently subjected by reason of frost, settlin of the ground in which they are embed ed, etc. l
The invention consists in the specific arrangement and construction of parts described and claimed,distinctive features being the formation of the casing of steel or wrought iron with parts and seats jet welded thereto, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1, is a central vertical sectional elevation of a service connection embodying the essential features of my invention;
Fig. 2, is a transverse section taken upon plane of line 22, Fig. 1, the valve stem 'bein omitted.
The valve pipe 10, and the lateral. service pipe or branch 9, are both made of steel or wrought iron, welded together at their lines of juncture. The valve'seat disk 8, of steel, wrought iron or brass, is interposed between the main valve pipe 29, and the lower extension thereof p and welded to both. The centrally tapped closure disk 0,-is then fitted loosely in the upper end of the valve tube p, and used as a guide to centralize the drill employed to bore the seat 8, in the valve seat disk 2. While thus loose it is also used as a guide to centralize the valve stem '0, when the latter is used to grind the valve seat a", by means of an abrasive applied to the conical tip or valve proper o, the rotation of the valve stem efiecting this result when the cone o, is pressed against the seat.

Application filed January 19, 1918. Serial No 212,633.
After these operations relating to the valve seat disk 8, the closure disk 0, is welded to the upper end of the pipe p, and in conjunction with the valve seat disk 8, is used as a guide and support for the tool by which the vent g, is formed in the gas main G,after the lower extension 39 of the valve pipe p, has been positioned and welded to said gas main pipe. Followin this operation of tapping the gas main the closure disk 0, forms the stationary nut fulcrum for the threaded portion of the valve stem o,the female thread having been previously formed in the said closure disk 0. After the valve stem 1), is thus positioned permanently the valve is normallyleft open and only closed in case of emergency, and it may be used to regulate and prescribe the pressure and flow of gas to the service pipe or branch 19'. The outer end or head 0 of the valve stem o, is angular in cross section to adapt it to manipulation by a key, wrench, or equivalent mechanical expedient.
The upper end of the valve pipe p, is threaded externally for engagement with a screw cap a, which is applied for the protection of the up er end of the valve stem '0. The tap connection thus formed is very simple, inexpensive and durable, and well adapted to resist the strain to which service connections are liable to be subjected by reason of earth-settling, frost, etc.
What' I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1; A service ta valve of the character designated, comprising a valve pipe and a lateral service branch pipe welded thereto,
a main, a valve seatdisk welded to the valve pipe, a bottom extension of the valve pipe Q Welded to said disk and to the main, a closure nut disk welded to the upper end of said valve pipe, and a threaded valve stem engaging with said closure nut disk and adapted to close the port in the valve seat disk in case of emergency.
