To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER ZABRISKJE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pagosa Junction, in the county of Archuleta and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Rotary Engine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object to provide a rotary'internal combustion engine which has two cylinders, one used to compress the combustible mixture which is ignited in the other or motor cylinder. The expanding gases act against pistons to rotate a shaft to which pistons in the compressing cylinder are secured, there being a by-pass in a rotatable member dis osed 1n the compressing cylinder and which carries the pistons acting in the said cylinder, to permit the passage of the compressed combustible mixture at the proper time, this combustible mixture passing through a communicating ineans to the motor cylinder. Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawin similar reference characters denote similar parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating my engine;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
By referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that each unit of the engine is provided with two cylinders, a compressing cylinder and a motor cylinder 11. In each of the com ressing cylinders 10 there is a cylindrica member 12 the diameter of which is less than the inner diameter of the cylinder 10, this member 12 bein rotatably mounted eccentrically relative y to the cylinder 10 and with its periphery in contact with the cylinder 10 at the outlet port 13 therein. S aoed from the outlet port 13 there is an in ct port 14 in the cylinder 10. The rotatable cylindrical member 12 is provided with two guideways 15 which are disposed one at each side of the axis of the rotatable member 12, one of the guideways 15 extending through one side of the member 12 and the other guideway 15 extending through the opposite side of the said member. In each of these guideways 15 there is a piston 16, the piston 16 being held yieldingly extended by means of springs 17 so that the outer ends of these pistons 16 will be held yieldingly in contact with the cylinder 10 when the member 12 rotates.
As will be seen by referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, there are two by-passes 18 in the member 12, one of these by-passes being disposed in front of each of the pistons 16. The function of each of these by-passes is to lead the com ressed gases to the outlet port 13 when t ey have been sufliciently compressed between the inner side of the cylinder 10, the periphery of the member 12, and the piston 16. In each pipe there is a check valve 19 the purpose of which is to permit the passage of a fluid from the end 18" of the by-pass to the inlet motor cylinder port, this check valve 19, however, preventing a movement of the fluid from the inlet motor port to the end 18" of the byass. It will be seen that the end 18 of t e by-pass is offset and cannot communicate with the outlet port 13, and the compressed gases at the said port 13 cannot return to the cylinder 10. The port 14 is connected with a carbureter in a manner readily understood, and the port 13 is connecte by means of the pipe 20 with an inlet port 21 in the motor cylinder 11.
Disposed in the cylinder 11 there is a cylindrical member 22, the diameter of which is less than the inner diameter of the cylinder 11, the cylindrical member 22 being rotatably mounted eccentricall relatively to the cylinder 11 and having its periphe in contact with the cylinder 11 at 28. he cylinder 11 is not only rovided with an inlet port 20 at one side, ut it is also provided with an exhaust port 24 at its outer side. The member 22 is provided with guideways 25 which correspond with the guideways 15 in the member 12, there being slidably disposed in the guideways 25 pistons 26 which correspond with the pistons 16, these pistons 26 being held ieldingly extended by springs 27. The cy inder 11 is provided with a spark plug 28 which is preferably disposed at the side of the cylinder provided with the inlet port 21.
The members 12 and 22 are mounted for rotating on a hollow shaft 29, there being an opening 30 in the member 22 and an opening 31 in the member 12, these openings 30 and 31 registering with the opening in the hollow shaft 29, so that a cooling fluid may flow through the openings 30 and 31 adjacent the guideways 15 and 25, to prevent the springs 17 and 27 from becommg unduly heated.
n the cylinder 10 there are guideways 32 one at each side of the port 13, members 33 being disposed in these guideways 32 which are held yieldingly extended by springs 34. These members 33 serve to prevent the ases from escapin I from one side of the cy inder 10 to the 0 er side. In a similar way members 35 are mounted to move in guideways 36 in the cyllnder 11, springs 37 being provided for holding the members 35 extended. Packing rings 38 are mounted on themembers 12 and 22 at the sides of the pistons 26, as will be seen by referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a rotary engine, a compression cylinder having an inlet and an outlet, a motor cylinder having an inlet and an outlet, a member of less diameter than the innerdiameter of the compression cylinder disposed in the compression cylinder with its periphery against the wall of the said cylinder at the outlet and rotatable on an axis eccentric to the cylinder, there being a guideway extending out through the periphery of the member, a iston movably disposed in the guideway, t ere being a by-pass in the member in advance of the piston to lead the gases compressed by the piston to the outlet, means for holding t e piston yieldingly against the compression cylinder, and means connecting the outlet from the compression cylinder and the inlet to the motor cylinder.
2. In a rota engine, two cylinders one a compression cy inder and the other a motor cylinder, disposed side by side each cylinder having an inlet and an outlet, communicating means extending from the outlet of the compression cylinder to the inlet of the motor cylinder, a member of less diameter than the inner diameter of the cylinders disposed in the cylinders, a piston on the member in the motor cylinder, the member being disposed in the compression cylinder with its periphery against the wall of the compression cylinder at the outlet, there being a guideway in the member inthe compression cylinder extending out through the peri hcry of the member, a iston movably isposed in the guideway t ere being a by-pass in the member in the compression cylinder in advance of the piston to lead the gases compresssd by the piston to the outlet in the compression cylinder, and means for holding the piston yieldin ly extended against the compression cylin er.
3. In a rotary engine, a compression cylinder having an inlet and an outlet, a motor cylinder having an inlet and an outlet, means connecting the outlet from the compression cylinder with the inlet to the motor cylinder, a member of less diameter than the inner diameter .of the cylinders disposed in the cylinders with its periphery against the wall of the compression cylinder at the outlet and rotatable on an axis eccentric to the compression cylinder, there being a guideway extending out through the periphery of the member and disposed in the compression cylinder, a piston movably disposed in the guideway, there being a by-pass in the member in advance of the piston to lead the gases compressed by the piston to the outlet, a spring in the guideway for pressing the piston yieldin 1y outwardly against the compression cylinder, there being an opening in the member at its axis throu h which a cooling fluid may be introduce and a piston on the member disposed in the motor cylinder.
4. In a rotary engine, a compression cylinder having an inlet and an outlet, a motor cylinder having an inlet and an outlet, means affording communication between the outlet in the compremion cylinder and the inlet in the motor cylinder, a member of less diameter than the inner diameter of the cylinders disposed in the cylinders with its peri hery against the wall of the compression cy inder at the outlet and rotatable on an axis eccentric with the compression cylinder, a piston on the member in the motor cylinder, there being two guideways in the member in the.
compression cylinder one at each sideof its axis extending through the periphery of the member, pistons movably disposed in the guideways, there being two by-pa'sses in the member one in advance of each piston to lead the gases compressed by the pistons to the outlet at the proper time, and means for holding the pistons yieldm 1y extended against the compression cylin er.
5. In a rotary engine, a compression cylinder having an inlet and an outlet, a member of less diameter than the inner diameter of,
the compression cylinder dis osed in the compression c linderwith is periphery against the we 1' of the cylinder at the outlet and rotatable on an axle eccentric to the cylinder, and a piston movably mounted on the member for en aging the inner wall of the com ression cy inder, there being a bypass in t, e member in advance of the piston to lead the gases compressed by the piston to the outlet.
6. In a rotary engine, a compression cylinder havin an inlet and an outlet, a motor cylinder having an inlet and an outlet, a member of less diameter than the inner diameter of the compression cylinder disposed in the compression cylinder with its peri hery against the wall of the compression cy inder at the outlet therein, the member being rotatably mounted on an axis eccentric to the compression cylinder, there being a guideway extending out through the periphery of the member, a piston movably diposed in the guideway, there being a by-pass in the memher in advance of the piston to lead the gases compressed by the iston to the outlet, means for holding the piston yieldingly extended against the cylinder, :1 member of less diameter than the inner diameter of the I motor cylinder disposed in the motor c linder with its perip ery against the wal of the motor cylinder between the inlet and the outlet, there being a guideway in the second mentioned member which extends through its periphery, a piston in the last mentioned guideway, means for holding the last mentioned piston yieldingly extended against the WALTER ZABRISKIE.
