COUPON OR TICKET HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1918.
- Application filed October 1, 1915. Serial No. 53,619.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE P. HARDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupon or Ticket Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The inventionis directed to a holder designed for use with tickets or coupons arranged in series slip form, the holder being constructed to conveniently receive a series of such coupons or tickets and permit the ready severance of any one or more from the main slip when desired.
The improved holder contemplates a receiving section constructed preferably of a single strip of material and of extremely simple and inexpensive construction, and a combined retainer and strziight-edgeadapted for convenient removableconnection with the receiving member and adapted-to retain the ticket slip within the member and to be conveniently adjustable with relation to the member to permit the severance of any convenient number of tickets or coupons.
The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the receiving member of the improved holder;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the combined retaining band and straight edge;
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the ticket slip shown in folded relation for insertion within the receiving member;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the holder complete with the inclosed slip.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings the receiving member 1 is preferably constructed of comparatively light sheet metal, bent into box-like form, presenting completely open side portions at 2 and the ends of the metal strip from which the member is constructed being slightly separated on the top 3 of the holder 1 to form an outlet opening t for the tickets or coupons. One terminal of the strip forming one margin of the opening is formed in a 'eturn bend at 5 to avoid a sharp edge, while the other or lower margin is formed into a rounded or coiled edge 6 over which the strip is directed in withdrawal. The re ceiving member, as stated is preferably consuch edge structed of a single strip of metal bent into box-like form so that the ends 7 are closed, and the outlet opening is preferably arranged near what may be said to be the upper end of the receiving member.
In conjunction with the receiving member I provide what I term a combined retaining band and straight edge 8 preferably constructed of a single piece of metal and bent into box-like form completely closed except at the ends 9. The retaining band has an interior dimension corresponding to the sectional exterior dimension of the receiving member, so that the band is comparatively freely slidable over the receiving member throughout the length of the same below the guide edge 6 of the delivery opening. One edge of the retaining member, preferably the lowermost edge of the upper surface thereof, as 10, is formed to present a tearing or straight edge, this formation being specifically necessary only when the retaining band is constructed of such size and material as will not of necessity present in outline or formation, as if the retaining band is constructed of comparatively thin sheet metal the tearing edge will be a necessary result of the formation with the specific construction.
The ticket or coupon strip 11 is folded into the form illustrated in Fig. 3 which for convenience may be termed an accordion fold preferably having a length corresponding to the interior length of the receiving member and a width equal to or less than the width of such member. The strip as an entirety is inserted into the receiving member through one of the open side edges 2 thereof, the free end of the strip being passed through the delivery opening 4: and over the guide edge 6. The retaining band is then passed over the receiving member from the lower end of the latter, said retaining band overlying the exposed end of the strip.
It is obvious that the strip may be drawn lengthwise of the receiving member through the outlet L and the retaining band positioned to register with the particular line of division of any one or more coupons and the projected portion beyond the retaining band readily severed by utilization of the straight edge 10 of such band, as will be obvious from Fig. 4 of the drawings. The retaining band may be moved lengthwise of the receiving member, that is toward the accidental separation of guide edge 6 to expose a suflicient length of the ticket strip below said band to permit graspmg of the same for Withdrawing a predetermined number of tickets oran appropriate length of the strip from the receiving member.
The ticket holder as an entiretyis constructed in effect of two strips "of sheet metal, each bent into box-like form and adapted for'telescopic relation, one'of the members thus formed acting as a housing for thebpen edges otthe otherto prevent A strip iform including'a' receiving mei'nber of box-"like form having top, bottom, andend Walls and having fully open sides and formed With a delivery opening in its top, and a retaining band having telescopic relation to the receiving"member With closed Walls overlying the open sides of the receivingfimeinber and of sufficient length to act to retain the strip in the holder.
2. A holder forcoupons or tickets in' st'rip the strip as an en-' fornrincluding a receiving member of boxlike torm having top, bottom, and end Walls and havlng fully open sides and tormed with a delivery opening in its top, and a retaining band having telescopic relation to the rece ving member With closed Walls overlying the open sides of the receivmg member-and -oi' sufiicient length to act to retain the strip in the holder, said retaining band presenting the straight edge to provide for severing the ticket strip on pre dethe receiving member, the closed sides of the band 'overlying'the open sides of the member,.said closed sides being of sufficient length to act as a retainer for'the contents of the receiving member.
In testimony whereof I aflixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
