Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residin at Newton Highlands, in the county of Mi dlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Signal-Boxes Having Local Alarms, of which the followin is a specification.

in carrying out this feature of my invention a controlling-means common to both mechanisms is employed, as for instance, the controllirig-means may consist of a com bined locking-device for the local-alarm mechanism and releasing-device for the signailing-mechanism.
Another object of the invention is the production of means, whereby both the local-alarm mechanism and the signalingmechanism when once started, are entirely out of the control of the operator.
In carrying out this feature of my invention, provision is made whereby the common mtrolling-means, when moved to start or came the starting of the local-alarm mechanism and signaling-mechanism, Will act to lock the operating-member or handle, and will hold the same locked until the controlling-means resumes its normal position at the end of the operation.
Another and more important object of the invention is the provision of common controlling-means for both the signalingmechanism and the local-alarm mechanism, and a winding'device for the actuatingspring of the local-alarm mechanism arranged to wind said spring, and also control the operation of the controlling-means to release the local-alarm mechanism and permit it to be operated by the local-alarm mechanism upon its initial movement to operate the signalingmeehanism, and upon further winding movement to operate said controlling-means to, in turn. operate the signaling-mechanism in case of failure of the local-alarm mechanism to operate, as,

for instance, in case the actuating-spring is broken, the prime necessity being the operation of the signaling-mechanism in any event.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means, whereby positive actuation of the controlling-means or member for both mechanisms is obtained in both directions.
In carrying out this feature of my invention, holding-means is provided for the controllingmeaus, arranged to hold it positively at all times; and said holding-means is composed of cooperating holding-members, which, when in one position with respect to each other, will hold the controlling-means or member in its normal position, and when in another position with respect to each other, will hold said controlling-means or member ii its abnormal position, said holding-members being movable independently of each other for the accomplishment of this result, but acting at all times conjointly.
Another object of the invention, is the provision of means for controlling the operation of said holding-means, whereb the controlling-member is positively held 111 its normal position, and is positively moved into its abnormal position to effect the release or starting of both mechanisms, and is so held while both mechanisms are operating, and is subsequently returned to normal position at the end of said operations.
In carrying out this feature of my invention, one member of the holding-means is arranged for operation by the Winding-device, and the other member is arranged for operation by the localalarm mechanism and one of said holding-members is arranged to be moved independently of the other by the Winding-device, While the actuatingspring of the local-alarm mechanism is being Wound, and the other holdin -member is arranged to be moved independentl of the aforesaid member by the local-aliirm mechanism during the time said mechanism is operating.
These several objects and also other features are all involved in the apparatus here shown, which apparatus comprises essentially a local-alarm mechanism and a wind ing-device for it, and a detent arranged for holding the local-alarm mechanism at rest while the winding-device is being operated, which detent subsequently holds the winding-dcvice at rest while the local-alarm mechanism is operating, and an arm connected to and movable with said detent, which is arranged for operating the pull of the signaling-mechanism. The detent is normally held in engagement with the localalarm mechanism, but movemen't thereof is caused when the actuating-spring of said mechanism has been wound a predetermined amount, thereby to release said mechanism, and said detent when thus moved to release said mechanism is movable into engagement with means associated with the winding-device, thereby to check movement thereof, and also to hold it in the position it occupies at such time, while the localalarm mechanism is operating, whereupon said detcnt is caused to resume its normal position, and both movements of said detent are positively governed by means associated with the local-alarm mechanism and with the winding-device, which are arranged for cooperation.

The box-case 1, contains a signaling mechanism of any well known or suitable construction, which is arranged in a shell 2. Said signaling-mechanism has usual electric terminals 3, and a projecting pull 4, adapted to engage it or control its actuation by being pressed downward.
The local-alarm mechanism and windingdevice and the controlling-means ofthe present invention are shown as mounted on the inside of the door 5 of the boxcase 1, and are operated by a handle 6 or equivalent form of actuator. The handle 6 is fixed to a shaft 7 journalcd in the front and back plates 8 and 9, respectively, these plates constituting the supporting frame-work, and being rigidly held in spaced-apart relation by posts or pins 10. The shaft 7 has fixed thereon a drum 11, having a flange 12, see Fig. 6, provided with a series of recesses 13, here shown as tour in number, forming ratehct-shoi'lldcrs, said recesses being equally spacedaround its circumference for the engagement therewith of a pawl 94, see Fig. 4, pivoted to the frame at 25, and adapted to prevent backward, and permit forward rotation of said drum. Within the drum 11 is arranged a strong coiled spring 23, having its outer end tilted to the drum, and its inner end fixed to a hub 14, which is loosely supported on the shaft 7. This spring serves as the actuating-spring for the local-alarm mechanism; and said drum 11, its shaft 7, and handle 6 serve as the winding-device for said spring. The spring is wound by a turning movement of the handle in a clockwise direction and the pawl moves into one of the notches at the end of a winding movement.
The hub 14, which is mounted loosely on the shaft 7 has a radial web 15, which carries at its periphery a spur gear-rim 16, here shown as laterally offset toward the drum 11, but it may be otherwise constructed. The teeth 17 of said spur-gear engage and drive a pinion 37 journaled in the framework, the shaft of which bears an escapewheel 38, with which cooperates a pallet 39, to which is attached an arm 40 of a bellhammer, which is adapted to strike a gong 410, as the pallet is vibrated. Said spring 23, and hub to which its inner end is connected, and spur-gear, pinion, escape-wheel, pallet, bell-hammer and gong constitute the local-alarm mechanism, which is here shown for the purpose of illustrating one embodiment of my invention; and it will be noted that as the winding-device, before described, is connected with the outer end of the spring 23, said spring may be wound for the purpose of accumulating power, which will be subsequently expended from the inner end of the spring for operating the local-alarm mechanism.
The inside of the spur-gear rim 16 or equivalent member, which is associated with the local-alarm mechanism, is formed with notches or recesses 18, see Fig. 6, two being here shown, which are oppositely disposed. said recesses having at one side substantiallv radial walls 19, and at the other side inclined walls 20. The recesses 18 are of a depth sntlicient to receive a detent 21, extending laterally from a dctent-carrying arm 22, which is pivoted at 26 to the frame-work, and said detent normally occupies a position 1n one of said recesses, thereby to hold the local-alarm mechanism at rest, and is movable out of the recess which it occupies, to
permit operation of said local-alarm mechanism.
Said detent is also arranged to prevent forward movement of the winding-device when the actuating-spring has been wound a predetermined amount, and while the local-alarm mechanism is operating. For the accomplishment of this result a diskmember 29 is loosely mounted on the hub 14, next the web 15, and has opposite notches or recesses 30, which have at one side radial walls 31, and at the other side inclined walls 32, said recesses corresponding to the recesses 18 in the gear-rim 16, and the walls thereof corresponding to the walls of said recesses 18. The recesses 30, like the recesses 18, are of a depth suflicient to receive the aforesaid detent 21. Said disk-member is here shown as arranged in the same plane as the recessed gear-rim, and is of a diameter to fit loosely within said rim, so that the detent 21 may pass out of a recess in one and into a recess in the other as they are moved relatively to each other, thereby engaging the rim when in one position, and the disk-member when in the other position. The disk-member 29 is arranged for operation by the winding-device, being associated therewith, and, as here shown, it has a short arcuate slot 33, arranged concentrically at one side of its center which receives a pin 34 extended from the drum 1.1, and as the drum is turned, with the exception of the lost motion due to the length of said slot 33, said disk-member will be correspondingly turned. The turning movement of said disk-member relative to the ear by the winding-device is limited by the ong arcuate slot 35, arranged concentrically at the other side of its center, which receives a pin 36 extended inward from the web 15, of the gear, and said slot also limits the relative turning movement of the gear 16, independently of the diskmember by its actuatingspring. Connected to move with the detent-carryin arm 22, but spaced laterally therefrom 1s a long arm 27, having at its extremity an inturnedportion 28, which extends through a slot 28' in the frame-plate 9, see Fig. 4, and also extends over and is adapted to engage the releasing-pull 4 of a normally wound signaling-mechanism, when moved downward to the dotted line position of Fig. 2. As said arm 27, is thus rigidly connected with the detent-carrying arm 22, being formed integral therewith, if desired, the signalingmechanism will be started upon a downward movement of the detent-carryin arm. Thus it will be noted that said arm 2 and the detent-carrying arm 22, bearing the detent, serve as the common controlling-means ormember of the signaling-mechanism and of the local-alarm mechanism, whereby both of said mechanisms are released and also of the winding-device, whereby the winding-device and local-alarm mechanism are alternately held from forward motion while the other is free for operation.
It will now be understood that in operation, as the shaft 7 is turned in a clockwise direction by the handle 6, the spring 23 will be wound from its outer end by the turning of the drum 11, while its inner end is held from escapement by the stationarily held hub 14. The hub 11 and the gear-rim l6 rigid therewith, are held stationarily at this time by the engagement of the detent 21, with the inclined wall 20 of one of the notches 18 on said gear-rim, the extremity of said detent being here shown as correspondingly inclined on the side that cooperates with said wall 20. The detent 21 is held from the tendency, which the inclined wall 20, under the action of spring 23, would normally have to move it out of holding position, by the periphery of the dislemember 29, which engages under detent 21 and holds it up into the notch 18, an adjacent recess 30 in said (llSk IIlGl'IllJQI 29 being just past said detent in.the normal position of the parts, to which position the disk-member was carried by the last operation of the gear when its pin 36 engaged the end of the long slot 35, as seen in Figs. l and 6, thus said disk-member serves as a holding-member for holding the detent in its normal position in engagement with the gear-rim, thereby to hold the local-alarm mechanism at rest. As the manual winding or turning movement of the winding-device commences, the pin 34 on drum 11 first moves lengthwise of the short slot 33, and on arriving at the end of said slot picks up the disk-member 29, which latter then turns with it through the winding movement. The winding movement continues until the shaft 7 has been turned a predetermined distance to wind the spring a predetermined amount, shown in the present embodiment as a half revolution, at which time the pawl 21 drops in behind the second of the ratchetshoulders 13. The turning movement of the disk-member 29, brings a recess 30 thereof, opposite or beneath the detent 21, which latter is then caused to move from the recess 18 into the recess 30 by the cam action of the inclined wall 20 of the recess 18 of the gear which at such time is permitted to move by the force of its actuating-spring 23. or is caused to move by the winding-device. As the diskmember 29 is turned by the winding-device and brought into position for releasing the detent 21, the pin 36 on the gear has traversed through the long slot 35, and is engaged by the end of said slot, and moved to thus force forward the gear to cause the inclined wall of a recess 18 thereof to positively move the detent from said recess 18 into the recess 30. Whether the gear is forced forward by the winding-device due to manual operation, or by its actuating spring, the result is the same in that the detent-member, or common controlling-device, is positively moved and the signalhlg-meehanism released. This provision is of importance in case the actuating spring oi the gear should be broken when the box is pulled, or should break While being pulled. The turning movement of the gear causes the operation of the local-alarm. It is to be particularly noted at this point that the operation of the box-pull l by the member 27, is absolutely dependent on, and necessarily substantially simultaneous with the release of the local-alarm mechanism by the moving of the detent 21, out of locking engagement with the gear-rim 16, although said detent and arm are not moved suitieiently For the arm to operate the signalingmeehanism until the local-alarm mechanism actually starts, as the initial movement of the gear-rim depended upon to move said detent and arm. l-lowever, in case the actuating-spring 23 has broken, such initial movement of the gear-rim will be given by the turning movement of the winding-device, so that in any event the detent 21, and arm 27 will be moved sufilcicntly for said arm to operate the signaling-meehanism.
The signaling-mechanism is thus released and permitted to operate and the localalarm is sounded by the unwinding of spring 23, until the gear-rim 16 has turned approxi mately a half revolution, the detent 21 in the meantime, being held in the notch 30 of disk-member 29. Then just before the ap proaehing notch 18 of the then rotating gear-rim 16, comes opposite the detent 21, the pin 36 arrives at the end of the slot 35, and picks up the disk-member 29, turning it so that the inclined Wall 32 of notch 30, in which the detent has been resting, forces said detent out of said notch 30 and into the notch 18, just as said notch 18 comes opposite said notch 30; it will be noted that the end-portion of dctent 21, engaged by the wall 32 in this operation is inclined, as seen at 41, to facilitate this action. The pin 36 is so disposed relative to the notches 18 and 80, that the detent 21 is pressed up fully into the notch 18, and comes to rest against its inclined Wall 20, just after the inclined wall 32 has pressed the detent entirely out of notch 30, so that it rests flat upon the adjacent periphery of disk-member 29, as seen at 12; the slot being of sufficient extent to permit the requisite movement of pin 34: in order that this movement may take place. This the cycle of operation is completed and the parts are ready for another winding of the spring by turning the shaft 7. It will be particularly noted that the arrangement of parts as described, is such that the local alarm cannot be caused to sound until the handle has been turned vtar enough to release the signaling-mechanism, and on the other hand the signaling-mechanism cannot be re:- leased by any possibility unless the localalarm is caused to sound, this on account of the positive intcrcontrol between the common controlling-member, which directl actuates the box-pull 4, and the stop-shou ders on gear-rim 16 and its cooperative diskmember '29. l urther, after the stem 7 has been turned to wind the spring enough so that the detent 21 is displaced and the gearrim 16 is released to start the local-alarm mechanism, both the operation of the localalarm mechanism and the release of the signaling-mechanism are entirely automatic and Wholly out of control of the operator; so that both the local-alarm Will be sounded and the signaling-mcchanism will necessaril be operated and thereafter the parts will e automatically reset for another operation without possibility of meddling or interference by an ignorant or mischievous operator.
I claim:
1. A signal-box comprising a signaling mechanism, a local-alarm mechanism, a. combined locking device for the local-alarm device and releasing-device for the signalingmechanism, and means for manually placing the local-alarm mechanism in condition for operation, adapted to operate said combined locking and releasing-devices to release both mechanisms.
2. A signal-box comprising a signalingmechanism, a local-alarm mechanism, a releasing-member for the signaling-mechanism, a locking-member for the localalarm mechanism, said members being connected together for simultaneous 0 oration, and means for manually placing t e local-alarm mechanism in condition for operation, and adapted to operate said connected members to release both mechanisms.
A signal-box comprising a signalingmechanism, a local-alarm mechanism, a releasing arm for the signaling-mechanism, a. locking detent for the local-alarm mechanism, a hub to which both said arm and detent are secured, and means for manually placing the local-alarm mechanism in condition for operation, and adapted to move the detent to release the local alarm-mechanism and to move the arm to release the signaling-mechanism.
4. A signal-box comprising a signaling mechanism, a local-alarm mechanism, means for placing said local-alarm mechanism under tension with a tendency to operate, and common controlling-means for said signailing-mechanism and said local-alarm mechanism, adapted when actuated by the aforesaid means to release both the localalarm mechanism and the signaling-mechamsm.
5. A signal-box comprising a signaling mechanism, a local-alarm mechanism, means for placing said local-alarm mechanism under tension with a tendency to operate,
1 common controlling-means for said signaling-mechanism and said local-alarm mechanism adapted to bring about the release of both concurrently, when actuated, and means for actuating said controlling-means by the 5 means that places the local-alarm mechanism under tension.
6. A signal-box comprising a signalingmechanism, a local-alarm mechanism, manually operable means for placing an element of said local-alarm mechanism under tension with a tendency to operate the same, means for normally restraining the tendency of said local-alarm mechanism to operate, having a connection with the signalingmechanism, whereby as the local-alarm mechanism is released, the signaling-mechanism is released, and means for moving and temporarily disabling said restraining-means having provision to be actuated by said manually operable means.
A signal-box comprising a signalinghanism equipped with a box-pull, a coal-alarm mechanism having an operating-handle, and means arranged for actua tion by said handle to simultaneously release the local-alarm mechanism and to op crate the boxull.
8. A signalox comprising a signalingmechanism equipped with a box-pull, a
loca1-alarm mechanism having a springmotor equipped with an operating-handle, a detent-arm arranged to lock said springmotor and adapted to be operated thereby while the handle is being operated, and having a box-pull operating-member actuated thereby, and means under the control of said handle for moving said detent-arm and box-pull operating-member to release the local-alarm mechanism and to actuate the 5' box-pull.

10. A signal-box comprising a signalingmechanism having a box pull, a ring actuated local alarm mechanism aving a shaft equipped with an operating handle, and a movable detent member a apted to lock and release the local alarm mechanism and having an element for operating said box pull, said member being arranged for 7. operation by the winding-device and by a cooperative part of said local alarm mcchanism when the operating handle has been turned a predetermined distance and adapt ed for operation by said operating handle upon further turning movement thereof.
11. A signal-box comprising a signaling mechanism, a local alarm mechanism, a combined controlling element adapted to cause both said mechanisms to be set in operation 30 by a single manipulation thereof, and means for temporarily disengaging said element from the control of both said mechanisms While they are operating, a manually operative winding device for winding the local 5 alarm mechanism and means operative by said winding device for controlling the operation of said controlling element.
12. A signal-box comprising a signaling mechanism, a local alarm. mechanism, a com bined controlling clement adapted to cause both said mechanisms to be set in operation by a single manipulation thereof, and means for temporarily disengaging said element from the control of both of said mechanisms while they are operating. said element being arranged for automatic reengagement to permit control of said mechanisms, for the next operation thereof, a manually opera tive winding device for winding the local alarm mechanism and means operative by said winding device for controlling the operation of said controlling element.
13. A signal-box comprising a signalingmechanism, a spring actuated local-alarm mechanism having a manually operated shaft for windin the spring thereof, means for releasing sai local-alarm mechanism for operation after a predetermined amount of winding of its spring, said releasing-means having associated therewith means for simultaneously effecting an actuation of the signaling-mechanism, and means for holding said manually operated shaft disabled from control of said local-alarm mechanism and also of the signaling-mechanism as said mechanisms operate.
14. A signal-box comprising a local-alarm device having an actuating-spring connected at one end to operate the alarm, means for winding said spring from the other end thereof, and means for normally lockin the local-alarm device having provision a apting it to be released by said winding-means after a predetermined movement thereof, 1 5 said restraining means having associated with it means to release the signaling-mechanism.

A signal-box comprising a signaling i'nechanism, a local-alarm mechanism having an actuatingspring, a Winding-device for the actuating-spring of the local-alarm mechanism, and eontrollingmeans for both mechanisms arranged to be controlled by the Winding-device and adapted to be operated by the local-alarm mechanism upon its initial movement to release the signaling- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
mechanism, and also adapted to be operated by the Winding-device to release the signaling system in case said local-alarm mechanism fails to operate.
30, A signal-box comprising a signalingmechanism equipped With a box-pull, a localilarm mechanism having a spring-motor equipped with an operating-handle, a detent-arm arranged to govern said springmotor, and having a box-pull operatingmember controlled thereby, and means under the control of the handle adapted for moving said detent arm to release the springmotor, and subsequently to actuate the boxpull, the spring-motor upon its initial movement being also adapted to move said detent-arm to actuate the box-pull.
31. In a signal-box, a spring actuated local-alarm mechanism comprising a drum, a Winding member connected with the drum, a spring arranged on the drum and attached at one end thereto, a gear to which the other end of said spring is attached, said gear being arranged to drive the alarm elements and having internal recesses, a disk member interposed between said gear and drum having recesses in its edge and having arcuate slots, pins arranged respectively on the drum and gear which enter said slots, and a detent member interposed between the gear and the disk member for alternately locking said members.
