` WINDMILL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1215.
Application led March 19, 1917. Serial No. 155,914.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LAMBERT O. Bounxn, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Headingly, in the county of Macdonald and Province of Manitoba, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Windmills, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to windmills and the object of it is to provide an arrangement of simple construction, easy to operate and one which will be eflicient in workinO.
LI7Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construotiom combination and arrangement of parts as w1ll be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claim hereuntoappended.
Figure 1 is a side View in elevation.
Fig. 2 is a front end view.
Fig. 3 is la top plan view.
Fig. 4 is a view of one of the parts.
Referring to the drawings like numerals designate like parts in the various drawin s.
g5 indicates the upright, hollow pole on which the windmill is supported.
6 and 7 are braces, being secured to the pole 5 and extending out in front to hold up the head.
The head is formed on a hub 8, from which spokes 9 radiate, their outer ends being attached to the band 10. This band is not straight, but is bent inwardly every width of the fans 11. Fans 11 are hingedly connected to the band 10 by clamps 12.
13 is the axle bent to form a crank at 13"L and having its front end extending forkshaped through hub 8 and carrying an end member 14. This end member has spokes 15 radiating from it to the front sides of fans 11.
16 is a part extend-ing upwardly and which acts as a fulcrum for the member 17. Member 18 extends from end of member 17 down the pipe 5. 26 is a guide for member 18. 20 are the tails hingedly connected at their inner ends near to the pipe 5. 21 is a weight lto equalize the weight of the head.
22 are side rods, which are together and swivelly connected to end of axle 13. They separate and pass, one on each side of pipe 5, then join and extend together for a distance. A coil spring 24 is connected between pipe 5 and the ends of side members 22.
23 is a cable fastened to ends of side rods 22 where they connect to axle 13. It extends through a hole in side of pipe 5 and then down.
The spring 24 pushes the side rods forward, they in turn push the axle 13 forward, which in turn carries the end member 14 forward which in turn by spokes 15 draws the inner ends of the fans 11 to the center, thus making the head in shape to be acted upon by the wind. To shut it off, pull cable 23 and inner ends of fans 11 will turn inwardly so that Jhe wind will have no effect on them. When partially open the wind will only have a part of its effectiveness on the head.
It is preferable to have ball and socket joints at most of the hinging places in my invention although I do not limit myself l to only this joint.
The tails 20 are fitted so as to come tight to weight 21 when windmill is not work ing. It will be noticed the tails are of different size, which has been found to be more effective.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of my invention will be 4clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted. What I claim as new is A. windmill consisting of a pipe supporting member, braces from said pipe to support a head, a head consisting of a hub and spokes, said spo-kes carrying a band, said band carrying fans and being bent inwardly at the width of each fan, an axle extending back lthrough and from said hub, said axle being bent to form aci-ank, front end of said axle carrying an end member which has spokes radiating from it and connected to front sides of said fans, a pumping means between the crank forming part of said axle and a shaft extending down said pipe, the inner end of said axle being cached to said side rods and extending down said pipe. f
In testimony whereof I aix my signature 1n the presence of two Witnesses.
LAMBERT OSBORN BOURKE.
