In starting certain alternating current motors it'is desired to connect the same directly to-the supply circuit initially and to thereafter include in circuit fusesfor protectlon thereof during running, and this invention has among its objects to provide a simple, ',reliable and conveniently operable controller for this and other purposes;

As shown in Fig.'1 all of the switch parts and fuses are mounted upon a suitable panel 7 which is provided with insulatin arriers 8 and 9 between adjacent fuses and contacts and with two sets of terminals 12 and 13, the, former for line connections and the latter for motor connections. The contact arms 1, 2 and 3 are yieldingly mounted upon an insulating block 14, each of 1) to a member 19 (Fig. 6) connected by ins 20 and 21 (Figs. 4 and 6) to parallel links" 22 and 23 respectively for en port and actulinks. The lin 22 is fixed to a rock shaft 24 journaled in bearings 25 and 26' (Fig 1) provided on panel 7, while link 23. is connected by a pin'27 (Figs. 4 and 6) to a frame 28 also mounted upon rock shaft 24 but loosely mounted thereon. Thus it will be observed that provision is madefor I a compound movement of, the block 14, and
hence for the contact arms, namely an oscillatory-movement with the rock shaft 24 as its'a xis and a substantially reciprocatory movement by oscillation of the arallel links 22 and 23, and as will a pear, both of such movements are obtainab e by oscillation of rock shaft 24. The rock shaft is rovided with an operatin lever 30 and wit the re. turn spring 31 same in two sections with its connecting strand bearing upon link 22 and itsends bearing against a cross bar 32 disposed, in front of panel 7. Thus the s ring 31"biases the rock shaft in a clockwise direction (Fi 3 and 4) to inove the arts into the shown in Fig. 3, said arts being stopped in such relation by abu nent of a shoulder 33 on frame 28 with the crossabutment of link 23 with a stop surface 34 on frame 28. Thus the operation of the device will be as follows: With the parts in the relation shown in Fig. 3 initial rotation of the shaft 24 against the action of spring 31 will rock only the link with the result of effecting substantial rectilinear movement of the block 14: and contact arms to the position shown in Fig. 4. In such a relation of the parts the link 22, as above noted, engages frame 28 and hence upon continued movement the frame and link mechanism will rock with the shaft to move the contact arms into engagement with the upper contactsl, 2 and 3 and compress springs 17 to insure firm engugement of the contacts. Thereupon restraint of frame 28 and release of shaft 24 will effect a return rectilinear movement on block 14 to draw the contact arms downwardly into engagement with contacts 1",
2.and 3" as shown in Fig. 5. The locking means for the member 28 comprises an e ectromagnet 40 mounted upon the panel 7 and provided with a hooked armature 41'to engage a pin l2 projecting laterally from an arm 43 of frame 28, as shown in Figs. 1, and 6. The magnet 40, as shown in Fig. 7, is adapted to be connected across one phase of the motor circuit upon initial closure of circuit whereby its encr gization is insured by the time the frame 28 reaches the position wherein it is to be lpcked. 'This'magnetbeing connected across a phase of the motor circuit will serve to, release the contact arms upon failure of voltage or upon blowout'of a fuse and the contact arms may be released at will by a pull upon the operating lever 30. I
Thus it will be observed that the desired starting and. runnin connections may be established .by a uni-directional movement of the operating lever followed by the release of said .lever when the member 28 is latched b the magnet. Moreover it will be observed t at the controller is at'all times biased to off position by both springs 31 and 35 where by it will be impossible to leave the controller in a dangerous position and that the mechanism inherentl requires and insures the establishment 0 starting connections prior to establishment of running connections.
,What I claim as new and desire to secure by, Letters Patent is: i
1. In a motor controller, in combination, a lurality of cooperating contacts and operatmg means therefor rovid'ing for engagement of one of sai contacts with other 65 of said contacts successively for starting and i for the .for automatic movement of sai running connections, said mcan's'including a member movable from an extreme position to another extreme position for starting connections and back to an intermediate position for running connections.
2. In a motor controller, in combination, a plurality of roiiperating contacts, operating means therefor providing for engagement of one of said contacts with other of said contacts successively for startin and running connections said means inclu ing a member movable from an extreme position to another extreme position for starting connections and back to an intermediate position for running connections and electromagnetic means associated with said operatin means to retain said contacts in running re ation. 3. In a circuit controller, in combination, a plurality of "stationary contacts, a cooperatin contact member, supporting means atter providing for movement of the same into engagement with said stationmy contacts progressively but necessitating movement of said member from initial position to its extreme limit of movement for initial engagement witlrs'aid contacts and means associated with said supporting means to effect return of said member to initial position directly from any contact engaging position in which said member is left unrestrained. r
4. In a circuit controller, in combination, a plurality of stationary contacts, a cooperating contact member, supporting means for the latter providing for movement of the 100 same into engagement with said stationary contacts progressively and further roviding for return of said member to initia position directly from final position and means asso ciated with said supporting means roviding 105 member from one of said contacts to another uponrestraint of a part of said supporting means and release of another part thereof.
5. In a circuit controller, in combination, no a plurality of stationary contacts, a cooperating contact member, supporting means for the latter providing for movement of the same into engagement with said stationary contacts pro ressively and further providing for return of said member to initialposition directly from final position, means associated with said supporting means providing for automatic movementofsaid member from one of said contacts to another upon restraint of a part of said supporting means and release of another part thereof, and electromagnetic restraining means for said former part of said supporting means.
6. In a circuit controller, in combination, a plurality of'stationary contacts, a movable contact member biased to disengage said stationary contacts and movable to engage,the same progressively, means to restrain said member in engaging relation with respect 130 to said contacts while permitting movement of the former relative to the latter, and means to automatically move said member from one contact to another when so restrained, said member upon failure of said restraining means being freed to directly return to initial position from any contact ongagin position occupied thereby.

In a circuit controller, in combination, a plilrality of stationary contacts, a coiiperating contact member, supporting means for said member providing for movement thereof from initial position to clear one of said contacts and to engage another of the same and for return movement of said memher into engagement with the former contact, said member being biased to disengage all of said contacts, means associated with said supporting means to releasably hold said member in engaging relation to said contacts and means associated with said supporting means to effect automatically said return movement of said member for contact engagement but only upon the functioning of said holding means.
9. In :1 circuit controller, in combination, a plurality of stationary contacts, a cooperating contact member and supporting means for said member providing a compound rectilinear and pivotal movement therefor for engagement thereof with one of said contacts anda return rectilinear movement for engagement thereof with another of said contacts.

In a circuit controller. in combination, a plurality of stationary contacts. a cooperating contact member and support ing means for said member providing for progressive rectilinear and pivotal movements thereof for engagement with one of said contacts, return rectilinear movement for engage ment with another of said contacts and return pivotal movement for disengagement of the latter contact and restoration of said member to initial positin 11. In a circuit controller, in combination, a plurality of stationary contacts, a cooperating contact member, supporting means for saidmember providing for pivotal and rectilinear movement thereof, means assoreturn rectilinear movement of said memher to engage another of said contacts, said member being biased for said return recti1" linear movement.
12. In a circuit controller, in combination, a plurality of stationary contacts, a cooperatin contact member, supportingmeans for said member providing for pivotal and rcctilinear movement thereof, means associated with said supporting means to necessitate rectilinear and pivotal movements of said member progressively for engagement with one of said contacts, and means to restrain a part of said supporting means for return I'CL'tiliI'IOtII'JDOVOIHBIlt of said member to engage another of said contacts, said member being biased for said return rectilinear movement, and also biased for return pivotal movement for direct disengagement of both said contacts.
13. In a circuit controller for alternating current motors, in combination, a movable contact member, a set of contacts to be engaged thereby in an extreme position thereof, for establishment of starting connections, a set of contacts to be engaged by said member in a position thereof intermediate of its initial position and the aforesaid position for establishment of running connections, and supporting means for sai member providing for its clearance of said running contacts during its movement from initial position to starting position.
14. In a. circuit controller for alternating current motors, in combination, a movable contact member, a set of contacts to be engaged thereby in an extreme position thereof, for establishment of startin connectlons, a set of contacts to be engaged y said member in a position thereof intermediate of its initial position and the aforesaid position for establishment of rniinin connections, and su pmrting means for sai member providing or its elearnne of said running contacts during its movement from initial position to starting position, said Supportin means having means associated tierewit to provide for automatic movement of said member from starting position to running position.
