Be it known that we, GEORGE W. Goss and CHARLES E. Goss, citizens of the Un1ted States, residing at Baltimore, in the county' width when it is desired to convey these materiais.
The main object of our invention resides in the provisionof two sets of bracket members designed to coperate with suitabie side boards and arranged' to be held locked in either an upright or an outward position, as may be desired. In this connection, it is aiso an object of our invention to provide heel portions upon which the ends of the brackets may rest, these heel portions being located outward from the side of a wagon and beyond the point of connection of the two brackets.
A further object of our invention aise resides in a novel structure whereby the aux i1iary side boards may be additionally braced in either of their app1ied positions.
The preferred embodiment of our invention is shown in the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which:

We have designated the wagon bed. gen
eraliy by the reference numeral l, it being understood that this wagon bed is suitably supported by Wheeis 2 and is provided with end boards 3. These end boards are pref erably of a height equa1ing the height of the side boards when the auxiliary side boards are applied and are in their upright positions. Short side boards 4 are also provided and preferabiy remain in their applied positions as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Each of the side boards has boited to it a plurality of suitable bracket members 5, the bolts passing through the fianges 6 and the portions 7 serving as braces to suitabiy strengthen the same. At their upper ends, these braces carry upward1y projecting tongues 8, each provided with an aperture 9 to receive the lockingpin. These braces are also provided with an outwardly extending heel portion 10 designed to serve as a base upon which either of the heel portions 11 or 12 of the auxiliary brackets 13 may rest. These auxiliary brackets 13 are also suitably boitd to auxiliary side boards 14 by means of the fianges 15. These auxiliary orackets are also suitably braced, as shown at 16 and are provided with a pair of sockets 17 and 18 disposed at substantiaily right angles to each other and designed to properiy fit the upstanding tongues 8. Each of the portions wherein the sockcts 17 and 18 are located, is also provided with alining apertures 19 designed to eoperate with the apertures 9 through the medium of the pins 20, Which latter are attached to the chains 21, t0 suitabiy hoid the brackets in position.
The oneration of our device thus far described is as :fo1lows: After the wagon has been constructed and the two sets of side boards also constructed, the brackets 13 are placed in a position so that the sockets 17 fit over. the tongues 8. In this position, the auxiliary side boards 14 wiil stand in an upright position and the heel portions 11 wi1l rest upon the heel portions 10 of the auxiliary brackets 7. This structure makes for rigidity and is deemed to be particulariy desirabie. Shouid it be desired to have the auxiliary side boards in an outward position, their brackets are disengaged from the main bracket 6 and the sockets 18 made to engage the tongues 8. In this position, the heel portions 12 engage the heel portions 10 and the brackets may be locked in position by applying the pins 20 through the aperturcs 19 and 9.
In order to additionally brace or hold the auxiliary side boards in position, we have provided ordinary link chains 22 which are secured to the auxiliary side boards at a point adjacent their upper edges, as is shown at 23. The end boards 3 each carry a pair of hooks 24:, whose mouth portions extend upwardly and it is by means of these hooks that the chains may be dropp6d into their proper position and thns held. Thus, when the side boards are in the position shoWn in Fig. 2, the chains are first released and after the side boards have been swung outwardly,.they are dropped into position to seCurely brace these side boards, as Will be apparent. Siniilarly, when the side boards are in upright position, the chane are first removed and then again hooked into position to hold the auxiliary boards upright.
In Fig. 2, We have shown a slide bar 25, designed for use in assisting the user in changing positions of the anxiliary side bOards. It will appear from Fig. 2 thatit is necessary to disengage all of the bracket niembers before the sides may be swnng to an upright position. To accomplish this, the slide bar 25, held in place by means of the bearings 26 is slid outwardly, say to the left, as is shoWn by dotted li1ies in Fig. 2. Befoire this, however, the side board has been lifted so that the slide bar 25 is in a position beneath the same. The auxiliary side board may then be lowered to rest upon this Slide bar and its other end grasped and disengaged from the remaining brackets and then swung to a vertical position, it being understood that there is sufiicient' play between partsto ailovv this, wherupoh it may be lowered to again seat itself over the tongues 8. After this, the operatOr may return to the end where the slide bar 25 is located and withdravv the same to lower the auxiliary side board and place it in its proper position. This saine operation may be repeated on the other side by sliding the slide bar to the right.
From the oregoing description, it Will be apparent that vve have provided a wagon vvherein the side boards may be moved to an upright or to an outward position. N ovel means have bcen provided for holding these side boards in such position and in addition,
structure has been provided in the slide bar 25 for permitting the conversion by a single operator.
What we daim, is:
1. A convertible wagon bed comprising a bed body, short side boards forming a portion of said bed body, brackets rigidly secured to said short side boards, auxiliary side boards, auxiliary brackets on said aux iliary side boards, a substantially horizontal heel portion on each of one set of said brackets, a substantially horizontaland a substantially vertical heel portion on the c0- operating end and the outside face of each of the other set of brackets, and means for m0nnting said sets of brackets together so that eitlier of the horizontal or the vertical heel portions of the one set coperates Witl the horizontal heel portion of the other set.
2.
