Application filed September 11. 1917. Serial No. 190,779.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM H. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cherokee, in the county of Alfalfa and State of Oklahoma, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Dosers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for admin istering medicine in a liquid form and more particularly to instruments for dosing hogs, and has for its object to provide a device whereby a hog can easily be handled and the medicine easily and more certainly applied internally.
With this and other objects in View my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the use of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view with central tube in section.
In carrying out my invention 1 use atong like structure consisting of a straight bar member 10 having an enlargement 11 with a central opening 11 and rounded extension 12 connected to the enlargement 11 by the flattened portion 13 which is provided with an opening to receive one end of a chain as will be hereinafter further set forth. Pivoted to-member 10 at 10 is a jaw clam ing member 13 the handle portion 13 of w ich is straight and extends alongside of the handie 10 as shown in Fig. 3. To the upper end of the bolt or rivetlO one end of a chain 14 is secured, the upper end being secured at the side of a funnel member 15, while a similar chain 14 is secured to the opposite side of the funnel and its lower end being secured in the eye 13", in the flattened portion 13 of the member 10 as before pointed out.
Passing through the central opening 11 in the enlargement 11 is a flexible tube 16 having a metal thimble 16 on its lower end so that the end of the tube 16 may not be withdrawn through such central opening. The funnel is secured to the upper end of the flexible tube which may be a rubber hose.
As stated the device is for closing or administering medicine to hogs, and to use same the hog which is to be treated is placed on its back as shown, the person holdin the hog standing astride of the hog, and holding both front feet; the straight bar through which the rubber tube passes is then placed in the hogs mouth as far back as possible acting as a guide and also as a spreader and prevents the hog from closing its mouth. The curved bar or member 13 is then clamped down on the hogs lower jaw which keeps it from shaking its head; the rubber tube 16 is then run down the throat of the hog for the required distance and the medicine poured into the funnel 15 at the outer end of the tube 16. until the desired dose is given. When this has been done the tube is withdrawn from the hogs throat and as soon as the tube leaves the throat the hog will swallow. The chains 14 and 14 are used to keep the hose and speculum or uide together and to prevent the tube from being completely removed from the hogs throat before the speculum is removed from the hogs mouth.
It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and eiiicient device for readily adminis tering medicine to a hog which has heretofore been a difficult and unsatisfactory treatment.
I claim 1. In a device of the character specified, a jaw spreader member to be inserted within the mouth of an animal, a lower-j aw clamping member movably connected therewith, a flexible tubular member to receive medicine and carried by said jaw spreader member, and flexible means connecting said tubular member with the jaw spreader and jaw clamping members.
2. In a device of the character specified, a jaw spreader member comprising a handle an enlarged intermediate portion having a central opening and an extension having an eye therein, a jaw clamping member pivotally connected with the jaw spreader menr her and having a handle and a curved jaw gripping arm adapted to act in conjunction with the enlargement of the jaw spreader member to complete the gripping action, a flexible tubing slidably held in the central opening of the j aw spreader member, a funnel means at one end of the tubing for filling same with a medicine, and means at its op posite end to prevent its withdrawal from the mouth pert-ion of the jaw spreader, and member having an opening therethi'ough, n
flexible means connecting the upper portion flexible hose slidably mounted in said openof the tubingwith thejaw spreader member. ing, a funnel at one end of said hose, and 10 3. A device of the character specified and fiexib1e means connecting the funnel With consisting of a tongs like structure including the jaw spreading member at each side of EL member for insertion in the mouth of an the hose. 7
animal and spreading the jaws thereof, said WILLIAM H. BAKER.
