WALL-PAPER-CLEANING DEVICE.

Be it known thatI, JOHN F. WALTERS, a citizen of the .United States, and resident of Battle Creek, in. the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wall-Paper-Cleaning Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wall paper cleaning devices, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is especially adapted for cleaning a ceilingor the like and which is. so constructed that the various parts of the ceiling are easily accessible so as to be thoroughly cleansed, without any danger of injuring the wall paper during the cleaning operation.

Another object of the invention is to provide, a device of this character which includes a receptacle adapted to receive a cleaning compound, which projects through the top thereof, and said receptacle, is provided with a longitudinally adjustable ejector, which is, operable by the handle of the device, so as to push the cleaning compound outwardly as the same is used.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, that includes a receptacle adapted to receive cleaningcompound, which is pushed therefrom as used by an ejector, said receptacle being provided with a hinged cover, which is adapted to swing back and be disposed adjacent the rear wall of the receptacle, so as to form a trough to receive all the shavings that fall from the cleaner during the cleansing operation.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient in operation.

In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout. the several views.

The numeral 1 designates the cleaner hold-- ing receptacle, which is preferably of an elongated shape, having anopen top 2, said receptacle comprising bottom portion 3 preferably formed of metal, and provided with stamped strengthening ribs 4. The bottom portion 3 has a depending threaded flange 5, which is centrally disposed, for a purpose to, be hereinafter more fully described. The peripheral edges of the body portion 3 are bent upwardly, to support the wall 6 of the receptacle, which is also preferably formed 01": metal, and has. its upper edge inclined, and rolled as shown atvv 7, so as to not mar the wall paper, when the cleaning composition has. worn down level therewith. The rear wall of the, receptacle is provided with a pair of vertical stamped strengthening ribs S that extend inwardly which acts as guides in a mannerv to be hereinafter more fully described.

The receptacle 1 is provided with a longitudinally movable ejector 9 therein, which is formed from a metal plate, having downwardly turned edges adapted to be disposed adjacent the inner wall of the receptacle, and if desired may frictionally engage the same. The movable ejector plate is, disposed within the receptacle 1, and is normally inclined as clearly shown. in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The inner edges of the ejector plate are notched, so as to cobperatively engage the guide ribs 8 on the inner wall of the receptacle, to guide the movement of said ejector. The ejector plate is also provided with a centrally disposed flat portion 10, that is normally alined with the opening in thebottom plate of the receptacle, and is positioned parallel with the bottom thereof.

The upper end of the handle projects through the openingin said bottom of the. receptacle, and is secured to the flat portion 10 of the movable ejector, by a screw 13, or any other desired type of fastening means. The handle 12 is rotatably engaged with the ejector plate, so that rotation oi said handle will be permitted for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully described.

The receptacle 1 is provided with a cover ll, which is inclined, and said cover is slightly longer than the receptacle projecting from the opposite ends thereof, and bent inwardly as shown at 15. Secured tothe rear wall of the receptacle are pivot pins 16, that are adapted to engage the opposite ends or the cover, so that the said cover is adapted to be swung back from over the open top of the receptacle, to the position clearly shown in Fig. 2 or the drawings. This cover la is substantially trough shaped, so that when the same is positioned adjacent the rear wall of the receptacle, it will term a trough to receive shavings, that roll from the rear edge of the device, when the same is in use. To securely lock the cover 1c.- in position adjacent the rear wall of the receptacle, when the sameis used, I provide a spring catch 1?, that is adapted to coiiperatively engage a projecting inturned edge 18 on the rear edge of said cover. lhe receptacle 1 is provided with a sight opening 19 in the wall thereof, so that the position or the ejector may be easily observed.

In operation, a cleaning compound of any desired kind, is placed within the receptacle 1, and a certain amount thereof will project through the open top thereof. The device is then grasped by the handle 11, and moves over the ceiling. the inclined upper edge of said receptacle racilitating this movement, asithe handle 11 will project downwardly at an angle, to permit easy and free movement of said receptacle. "When the device is in use, the over ll is swung back into position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, where it will act as a trough to receive the shavings that roll over the rear edge of the receptacle, when the same is moved across the ceiling. The rolled edges of the inclined upper edge of said receptacle, will prevent mar-ring or injuring oi' the paper during the cleansing operation, when the cleaning compound is worn down to the level of said upper edge.

When it is desired to force the cleaning compound through the top or" the receptacle, when the same is worn down level therewith, it is only necessary to rotate the handle 12, whereupon owing to the fact that the upper end thereof is threadedly engaged with the depending flange 5 on the bottom of the receptacle, the handle will be moved upwaidly through said bottom, and as the ejector plate 9 is connected with the top of the handle, said plate will be consequently moved in the receptacle, to accomplish the desired purpose. Ow-' ing to the inclined upper edge of the recepe tacle 111 which the cleaning compound is positioned, it is obvious that the device is operated from an angle, and the projecting operating handle 11 consequently will be so disposed, so as to facilitate the operation of the device and enable the operator to easily reach all parts of the ceiling or the like. The cleaning compound may be forced from the receptatcle as the same is used, without the necessity of lowering the device from operative position, as it is only necessary to slightly rotate the handle 11 to accomplish this purpose. The hinged cover it, not only forms a cover to hold the cleaning compound in the receptatcle, when the device is not in use, but also serves the double purpose of forming a trough, that is disposed'adjacent the rear edge of the receptacle, to receive the shavings that drop from the device during its operation, and prevent the same from falling onto the floor, and onto the operator.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understandinglof the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying aspecific structure, I desire that it be understood that such chan es may be made in said structure as do not epart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the class described including a cleaner holding receptacle having an open top, said receptacle having its rear wall higher than the front wall and the upper edges of the end walls inclined, means connected with the receptacle whereby the same is adapted to be moved across a ceiling or the like, and a hinged cover adapted to be used as a shaving receiving trough when the device is in operation.

2. A. device of the class described including a cleaner holding receptacle having an open top, said receptacle having its rear wall higher than the front wall, means con nected with the receptacle whereby the same is adapted to be moved across a ceiling or the like, and a shaving receiving trough disposed adjacent the upper edge of the rear wall.

3.
