Description

W. T. ODONNELL.
FOOT GUARD.
APPucATmH mm NOV-19.1917.
Patented May 14, 1918.
WILLIAM T. ODONNELL, OF GREAT FALLS, MONTANA.
FOOT-GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 15918.
Application filed November 19, 1917. Serial No. 202,778.
I?) all whom it may concern:
Be it. known that "VILL'IAM T. ()'l)o x.\i:L i., a citizen of the United States, residing at 3521 Sixth avenue, north, Great Falls. in the county of Cascade and State of-Uontana, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-( uai'ds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to foot guards ofthe type shown ,in Patent 1,186,601 granted to me on June 13, 191i). and in common with said patent has for its object to provide foot guards which will prevent the cntry'of a persons foot to a position where it will be caught between either the guard and main rails of a railway track or between the main rail and the frog.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a railway track illustrating the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the immay be utilized between the guard rails 5 and the main rails 6 or at the frogs, adjacent switches, or at any other place where converging rails present the possibility of a person-s t'oot being caught and held until suclrperson is struck by atrain.
One of the "principal objects of the present invention is-to provide a structure which.
may be readily and cheaply manufactured. one which may be stamped from sheet metal and will comprise such elements that the labor incident to putting. it into place will bevery slight. In carryingout these objects I stamp, preferably from a single sheet of metal, a structure such as l shown in Fig. 2 comprising a vertical rear wall 7,
a top plate 8, .an inclined end wall. 9 which acts as a deflector for the foot and rearwardly extending wings 10 having curved rear edges 11. Bolts 13 pass through angular openings -1-l formed in the rear wall 7 and carry nuts 15 by which a drawing action may be exerted upon said bolts so that when they are 'passed through openings formed in the rail 16. for example, the free edge of the top plate 3 will be thrown up against the under ltlt ot' the ball lb of the other rail 19. The top 8 is longitudinally grooved at 20 to permit the llange .21 of the cal wheel 22 to pass over the guard without causing a depression of the same.
, To guardagainst the possibility of a person's foot being caught between the top plate 8 and the ball of rail 16 a filling piece or block 23, which is triangular in cross section, is located at the juncture of these two parts.
The provision of the curved rear edges of the wings '10 results in a slight'rocking motion being imparted to the structure under the action of the bolts and since the device as a whole is made of sheet metal it follows that contact of the free edge of the top 8 with the under side of the ball of the rail 18 is a more or less resilient one which will maintain the contact of these parts throughout slight inequalities of alinement of the rails due to varying conditions of the ballast of the track.
It is to be understood that the accompanying illustration is merely exemplary and that the invention includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim is;
1. A device of the character described made of a single sheet of sheet metal and comprising a top. a vcrtiial rear wall. rear provided with a longitudinally extending greove 01 thepassage of the flange of a car wheel.
2, A structure as recited in claim IWhBIEk m a filling block, that is triangular in cross section is disposed at the juncture of the' top plate and a ball of the 'rail that is engaged by the bolts.
