'To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRYl S. VINUENT, of Ridgewood, in the county of Ber en and State of New Jersey, have invente a certain new and useful Improvement in Locomotive-Boiler Superheaters, of which improvement the following is a specification.
y invention relates, generally, to superheaters of the lire tube type for locomotive boilers, and, particularly, to those of the design of that ty e, in which the throttle valve is interposed) between the superheated steam compartment of the superheater and the cylinders of the locomotive, an early instance of which is exemplified in Letters Patent of France No 9.7012, granted to la Compagnie du Nord, under date of December 4, 1860.

y invention is herein exemplified, as applied in a locomotive boiler, 4, which is of the usual construction, and is provided, at its forward end with a. smoke box, 4, which is supported on the ordinary cylinder saddles, 12. A plurality of fire tubes, some of which, 6?, are of larger diameter than the others, extends from a firebox at the rear end of the boiler, which is not shown, to the front flue sheet, 4", and the products of combustion pass 'through the tubes, in the usual manner to the smoke box, 4, from which they are discharged into the atmos here through the stack, 4*'.

In ordinary practice, control of the admission of steam from the boiler 4to the saturated steam compartment, is effected by a throttle valve located within the boiler, at the rear dnd of the dry pipe, and governing the admission of steam `from the boiler, through said pipe, to the saturated steam .-com atment, and the branch steam pipes are is osed inside of the smoke box, each being connected to one of two nozzles at the ends of the superheated steam compartment. In the application of in invention. the superheater header is mo ified by eliminating the two end branch steam pipe nozzles above stated. and substituting therefor a single central delivery nozzle, which is connected to the casing of a throttle valve located on the outside of the boiler, and controlling the branch steam pipes, instead of the dry pipe, the branch steam pipes, i'i this case, leading. entirel outside of the boiler, to the engine cylin ers. The delivery nozzle, of the saturated steam compartment of the head1-r, is connected, by an angle pipe, 5, passing through the top of the smoke box, 4, with a for wardly extending nozzle, G, formed on a throttle box or chest 0, which is supported on the outside of, and secured detachably to, the shell of the boiler, 4, immediately in rear o the smoke box, ball joint rings, (3, being fitted between the pipe, 5, and-the nozzles, T0 and 6, to insure tight joints. The pipe 5, and throttle box, (i, are preferably, as shown, inclosed in a light sheet metal case, 6*', and the pipe, 5, being supported by the throttle box, and this, in turn, by the boiler, no additional weight is imposed on the superheatcr header. The branch steam pipes, (i3, are connected to opposite sides of t e 'throttle box, 6, and lead therefrom, on the outside of the smoke box, and adjacent thereto, to connections with the distribution valve chests, 12", of the locomotive, following, as nearly as may be, the curvature of the smoke box, to a level slightly below of the boiler. Said openings are closed, on the inner sides of the branch steam pipes, by cover plates, if, which are secured detachably to the smoke box, to admit of the insertion and removal of boiler tubes adjoining the sides of the boiler.
