Description
A. WYCKOFF.
Wood Pavements.
Patented May 7,1872.
UNITED STATES ARCALOUS WYCKOFF, OF ELMIRA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD PAVEMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,617, dated May 7, 1872.
Specification describing a certain Improvement in Wood Pavements, invented by AR- OALOUS WYOKOFF, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York.
This invention relates to that class of wood pavements which are constructed of pavingblocks of definite form, put down in rows with intervening spaces for the reception of suitable concrete material; and my improvement consists in cutting the paving-blocks in pairs, out of rectangular pieces of timber, without waste of material, such blocks being formed with one irregular side, so that in putting down the blocks with these irregular sides, all facing in one direction, open spaces for the concrete will be formed between the rows, though the blocks of one row touch the blocks ot' the adjoining rows.
Figure I is a plan of a pavement constructed of blocks formed according to my improved method. Fig. II is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. III is a perspective view of a rectangular piece of timber, furnishing a pair of paving-blocks when split, as shown in Fig. 4.
The same letters of reference are employed in all the gures in the designation of identical parts.
The paving-blocks are formed in pairs, out of rectangular pieces of timber cut to the proper size, by splitting these pieces of timber along the line c, as indicated in Fig. 4. In this manner two blocks, A and B, each having one irregular side, aand b, respectively, are obtained without waste of material. The outlines of these irregular sides may, of course, be of any preferred forms differing from those illustrated in the drawing. The paving-blocks thus made are put down in parallel rows, with their irregular sides all facing one way, as shown in Fig. l, so that suitable spaces for the reception of the concrete will be formed between the rows even though the blocks be laid in contact with one another. I prefer also to leave spaces between the ends ot' the blocks for concrete, and to arrange them so that the joints in one row shall not coincide with those in the adjoining rows. For the sake of symmetrical appearance rows composed of blocks marked A alternate with rows composed of blocks marked B however, the blocks A and B may be laid promiscuously.
I claim no novelty in constructing a wood pavement entirely of either form of blocks shown, as one form at least has heretofore been used for that purpose.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The method of forming the paving-blocks A and B, having matching irregular sides a and b, in pairs out of rectangular pieces of timber, without waste, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
