IMPROVEMENT IN BEE-HIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,605, dated May 7, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH WILLIAMS, of Beaus Station, in the county of Grainger and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Apparatus for Feeding Bees; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being hadto the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a sectional view of my invention.
My invention has relation to means for feeding bees; and consists in the construction of a feeding plate or dish having a perforated top, and the combination therewith of a bottle inverted as hereinafter specified and claimed.
A of the drawing represents a plate with raised flanches c, and B is' a perforated cover, adapted to fit upon said plate in the manner shown. D represents a raised tube upon the cover B, adapted to receive the bottle mouth or nozzle. This plate and its cover are usually made in separate pieces, so that they may be easily separated for cleansing purposes, and also that the parts may, it desired, be utilized for domestic purposes when not on duty in feeding bees; but I sometimes prefer to construct both the plate and its cover in a single piece without any provision for removing the top. I advise that this plate and its cover be constructed of earthen, but any suitable metal will answer my purpose. H represents my feeding-bottle, which has a mouth or nozzle adapted to fit closely in the tube D, as shown. I find it most desirable to construct this bottle with a broad flat top and curved or beveled sides; but any form or shape of bottle may be used with the plate, provided the nozzle is adapted to the tube.
My apparatus is used as follows The plate is first placed in the hive below the comb and the bottle filled with honey. I then invert the bottle and place its nozzle securely in the tube D. Now, as the bottom of the nozzle only reaches to a point that is level with the top of the openings in the perforated cover, the pressure of the atmosphere upon the fluid in the plate will not permit such fluid to rise above the surface of said openings; hence the bees are enabled to stand on solid matter and suck their food through the perforations at will.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The perforated top B, covering a honey-receptacle and having tube D or equivalent device, in combination with a bottle, substan tially as and for the purpose specified.
