Description

A. E, PURSELL.
Improvement in Apparatus for Attaching Artificial' Teeth to the Pyroxoline Base.
Patented May 7, I872.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABNER E. PURSELL, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES A. TROUTMAN, OF SENECA FALLS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR ATTACHING ARTIFICIAL TEETH TO THE PYROXYLINE BASE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,575, dated May 7, 1872.
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABNER E. PURSELL, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain Instruments for Attaching Artificial Teeth to the Pyroxyline or Oollodion Base by solid Pyroxyline Material, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the flask; Fig. 2, a section of the flask through the line as :10, showing the clamping attachment affixed; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the case for attaching the backing to the teeth.
The first part of my invention relates to the construction of a flask for holding the plate and teeth during the process of attaching them together, and to the clamping attachment connected therewith for applying the pressure during such process; the second part of my invention consists of a case for holding the blocks during the process of attaching the backing thereto.
The flask is of a nearly circular form, and consists of the nowell A, cheek-pieces B B, and cope O. The cope and nowell are held together by the slotted straps D D and screws E. Thecheek-pieces are attached to them by dowel-pins on their ends, which fit into the holes in the nowell, and they are secured at their center, where they are halved -together, by a pin, F, passing through them and the cope and nowell. Around the upper side of the cope and the lower side of the nowell a dovetailed groove is made, in which the block Gr slides. The clamping attachment is secured to the block G by the screw H, and consists of the following parts: I is a slotted bed-piece, at one end of which an opening is made to receive the head J, which is adjustable vertically, and is held to a desired height by the screw K; at the foot of the head J is a chuck, L, made of leather, metal, or other suitable material, with its edges cut into a variety of forms to suit the diiferent parts of the work; it is held between the head and the washer M by means of the bolt N. At the opposite end of the bed-piece I is a screw, 0, Worked bythe handle]? the point of the screw sets against the block Q, and presses it against the flask. The case B is divided into several compartments, into which the blocks are placed and invested with plaster, which holds them firmly, while the strips of solid pyroxyline material are attached to the heads of thepins of the teeth; this constitutes the first step in the process of attaching the teeth to the plate. After the blocks are prepared in this way the teeth are set up to wax on a solid plate raised to the mouth, and the whole is set into the flask and invested in plaster; the wax is 'then removed from the inside of the teeth, and
strips of solid pyroxyline, reduced to a proper consistency by the action ot'ether, are inserted between the backings and the plate, when the chuck L of the clamping attachment is brought to bear against it, and pressure applied by means of the screw 0 until all of the dissolved material is expelled from the joint,
and a perfect union of the parts effected. After the whole of the inside has been treate in this manner the cheek-pieces B B are taken out, and after trimming out the plaster for this purpose and reversing the position of the clamping attachment, the outside is finished in the same manner. When it is necessary or desirable to do so, the clamping attachment may be used upon the under side of the flask by changing the block G to the groove formed in the nowell, and, by means of the slotted straps D D the flask may be made deeper when the necessities of the work require it.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A flask, for the purposes herein set forth, constructed substantially as herein described.
2. The clamping attachment, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination of the flask and clamping attachment, when constructed and arranged to operate as and for the purposes herein described.
4. The case It, constructed as herein described, and for the purpose specified.
an ABNER E. PURSELL.
