, To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. Hnnn, a citizen of the United Statesof America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Applying Chine- Hoops to Cylindrical Bodies, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. The invention relates to the manufacture of barrels and similar packages, and has more particular reference to mechanism for applying chine-hoops thereto- As specifically shown, the machine isadapted for the application of such hoops to cylindrical bodies formed of paper or fibrous material, and it is the object of the invention to apply a hoop that will reinforce and strengthen the chine and alsowill bind the edge and form an inner seat for the reception of the head. l V I The invention'comprises, first, means for positioning the hoops upon-the chine; further, means for contracting and tightening said hoops upon the body; and further, various features of construction as hereinafter set forth.

1 is a suitable bed or frame'upon opposite ends of which are vertical extensions 2 and 3 carrying the hoop-applying mechanismfor opposite ends of the barrel, sufficient clearance being provided between these extensions for receiving the barrel body.-
These mechanisms at opposite ends of the machine are in many respects exact duplicates, but provision is made for a relative movement longitudinally of the bed, which necessitates the mounting of one of the mechanisms on a traveling head, whereas the other may remain in fixed position. Each of these duplicate mechanisms comprises a head 4, which has a portion adapted to fit within the end of the cylindrical body,-
and an annular shoulder portion 5 for bear ing against the end ofthe chine-hoop and pressing it into full engagement with the body. The heads 4 are mounted upon rotary shafts 6 and 6 which, in the operation of the machine, are revolved in unison through the medium of mechanism of the following construction:
7 is a shaft'extending longitudinally and centrally of the bed 1 and j ournaled in suitable bearings therein. 8 and 9 are gearwheels upon opposite end portions of this shaft, and which respectively engage pinions 10 and 11 upon the shafts 6 and 6?. As these intermeshing gear-wheels and pinions are in the same ratio, it is obvious that the shafts 6 and 6 will revolve in unison.
Adjacent to each of the heads 4 is a non- V movement to all of the arms 13, which will I cause the rollers 14 to move toward or from the periphery of the rotary heads 4. In addition tovthe rock-arms 13 there is provided arock-arm 18, which carries a roll 19 having perforating punches 20 in the -periphery thereof. This rock-arm 18 is mounted on a rock-shaft 21 journaled in-the head 12, at the opposite end of which is a rockarm 22 having at its free end a roll 23 engaging a cam groove in a gear-wheel 24,
which is driven from a pinion upon the shaft 6. The Wheel 2i is also provided with a second cam, preferably on the opposite side thereof, vvhich engages a roclnarm connected with a gear-segment- 2'? which ena gear-segment in the periphery of the ring 16. Thus during the rotation of the shaft 6 and head i, movement is communicated to the cam Wheel 2% by the lPlIllOIl 25, Which causes the rocking of the arms 13 and 18, as will be more fully hereinafter described The rock- arms 13 and 18 are normally under tension ct- springs 13 and 18 which springs are anchored upon the head lfl and tendto move said arms toward adjustable stops 13 and 18 As thus far described, the mechanisms upon opposite ends of the machine are duplicates, but, as previously stated, one of these mechanisms is mounted upona slide movable longitudinally of the bed; As shown in l, the mechanism on the lefthand'end is mounted upon a slide 29'engaging suitable slideways in the outward extension 2 of the frame; This slide is actuated by a cam 30, preferably formed integral with thegear-Wheel 8, andvvhiclr engagesa'roll 31 CODDGClLGClWlill the slide A yielding connection is preferably provided between theroll an'd'the slide, comprising a slicing block 32 to ivhich'the roll is directly attached, which block recessed to receive a spring 32%"engaging a bcarii 3-l at the end ofthe shai't The sliding bloci-z has an aperture therein through which the reduced end oi shaft 6 reciprocates. A set-screw 35, secared'to the vertical extension 2, bearing against the op posite end of the bloolrilil serves to adjustably limit the movement.

For engaging and disengaging the cylindrical body upon the bedor frame, there are mounted upon the bed'l inclined crosstracks 4:2 and adjacent to these tracks are ro'cl-:arms d3 connected by an intermediate lever system with a controlling lever at. This permits the barrel to rest upon the inclined tracks 4-2 and rock-arms 43, but when the operator actuates the lever ad, the rock-arms a3 will be withdrawn permitting the barrel to roll oif from the inclined tracks.
In applying hoops to bodies formed of different gages of stock their outside diameter must be varied. This requires an adj ustment in the hoop-contracting mechanism which I have provided for as follows: The rock-arms 13 are pivoted upon studs 45, which, as shown in Fig. 6, engage eccentric bushings 46 in the head 12. These bushings are provided with gear-teeth engaging adjustable screws 47 in the head 12, operable from the periphery thereof. This permits of rotating the eccentric bushing so as to move the studs 45 inward or outward, which will compensate for variations in thickness of the stock. When adjusted the studs 45 are clamped in position by nuts 48 engaging threaded portions d9 thereof.
To protect the mechanism surrounding the heads an annular shield 50 is preferably placed thereabout, as shown.
W hat I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a bed, of duplicate mechanisms mounted upon opposite ends of said bed, each comprising a standard, a rotary horizontally-arranged shaft, a head mounted on said shaft, a series of rolls surrounding said head, mechanism for moving said rolls correspondingly inward and outward, and a cam controlling said mechanism driven in timed relation to said rotary shaft; a carriage on which one of said duplicate 1nechanisms is mounted movable purpose described.
2. The combination with a bed, of dupliends of said bed for engaging and rolling chine-hoops upon opposite ends of a cylin- .drical body, inclined cross-tracks on said bed, a stop for arresting a cylindrical body on said incllned cross-tracks 111 axial ahneretain the same during the operation of the engaging and rolling of the hoops upon the body, and means for withdrawing said stop to permit the hooped barrel to roll 011" said inclined cross-tracks at the completion of the operation.
3. The combination with means for pressing a hoop in engagement with a cylindrical body, of a relatively-movable member, a series of rolls mounted upon said member surrounding the periphery of said hoop, a separate punching rOll adapted to contact with the periphery of said hoop, means adapted to actuate said series of rolls into contact with the periphery of said hoop, and means adapted to actuate said separate punching roll into contact with the periphery of said hoop, both of said last-mentioned means including a cam member common to both.
4:. The combination with an annular memher for bearing against the end of a hoop, of a concentrically-arranged, relatively-movable member, eccentric serrated bushings in said last-mentioned member, studs engagmg said bushings, rock-arms pivoted upon s id studs, rollers attached to said rock arms and adjustable screws engaging the serrations of said bushings, whereby the positions of the rolls relative to said annular member may be adjusted to compensate for variations in thickness of the stock of the body to which the hoop is applied.
The combination with a revoluble member adapted for engagement with a cylindrical body having a hoop thereon, of a stationary member having a grooved bearing, rolls pivoted upon said stationary member, arranged adjacent to the periphery of said hoop, and a rin member engaging said grooved bearing in the stationary member, movable relative thereto and pivotally connected to said rolls.
6.
