Description

WILLIAM W. MARSTON.
Improvement in Combined Burglar-Alarms and Door-Fasteners.
NO.126,558, Patented May7,1872.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM W. MARSTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BURGLAR-ALARMS AND DOOR-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,558, dated May '7, 1872.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. MARsroN, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improved Burglar-Alarm and Door- Fastener, and the following is declared to be a correct description thereof.
This device is made for holding an air bag and whistle or horn in such a manner that the bag will be closed tightly at the neck to retain the compressed air when the alarm is in a normal condition; but so soon as an attempt is made to open the door the neck is liberated, and the expelled air will blow the whistle or horn for a considerable period of time, proportioned to the size of the bag and the pressure of the air. The apparatus still remains operative as a door-fastenin g.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan of the apparatus complete and ready for use; and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, as applied to the lower part of a door between that and the floor.
The props a and b are made with points or sharpened ends, and they are lapped upon each other, as seen in Fig. 1, and pass through loops 0 and d, that, preferably, are made of metal. These loops are long enough for the insertion through them of a wedge, f, that acts to confine the neck 9 of the air-bag h, either between itself and the prop b, or else between the props (t and b, and thereby retain the air that is blown into the bag h, to distend the same previous to being confined by the said wedge. l is a trumpet or horn, inserted in the neck 9 of the bag it.
The strut a is made with notches i i in one edge, and it will now be apparent that when the parts are set in the position shown the apparatus can be applied diagonally between a door and the floor, or between any other parts, one of which will be moved by a burglar in effecting an entrance, and the motion given will move the strut a upon the strut b, so that the straps or loops 0 61 will slip into the notches i and relieve the neck of the air-bag from pressure and allow the horn or whistle to be blown by the escaping air. The fastening still remains in position as a strut, to prevent the door being opened or the alarm stopped; hence a burglar will be most likely to withdraw.
The loops 0 01 should pass through holes in the strut b, or be guided by notches in its edge for retaining the parts in position, and the notches or shoulders on the struta form stops to limit the motion.
I claim as my invention- The notched strut a, strut b, and loops 0 d, in combination with the air-bag, wedge, and alarm horn or whistle, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 3d day of April, 1872.
Witnesses: W. W. MARSTON.
