To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. Scans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Custer, in the county of Custer and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in scrapers and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be caused to properly engage the ground to obtain a load and adjusted out of contact with the ground to maintain its load.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the load carried thereby may be readily dumped.

Another object of the invention is to pro- .vide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the draft team is positioned rearwardly thereof and wherein the device includes a rearwardly directed push bar to which the draft team is hitched.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in thecombination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved scraper whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use as will be hereinafter more full'yset forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in top plan of a scraper constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;

Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation of the device as herein embodied with the main axle in section and one of the supporting wheels coacting therewith omitted;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken through the forward end portion of the device as herein set forth; and

Fig. 4: is a fragmentary view partly in elevation and partly in section illustrating the holding rack coacting with the yoke as herein included.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings 1 denotes an axle of predetermined length and which has loosely mounted upon each of its end portions a supporting wheel 2. Engaged with the axle 1 at substantially its longitudinal center is a sleeve or casting 3 to which is secured an end portion of a rearwardly directed pole or push bar 4. In swivel engagement with the rear or free end portion of the pole or push bar 4: is a caster wheel 5. Engaged with the axle 1 adjacent its opposite ends are the sleeves or castings 3 and extending upwardly from said sleeves or castings 3 are the arms 6. Also engaged with the castings 3 are the forwardly directed arms 7 between which is positioned the scraper S. The scraper 'S has its upstanding side walls pivotally engaged with the outer or free extremities of the arms 7 through the medium of the members 9.

l0 denotes a rearwardly disposed rod positioned above and in vertical alinement with the pole or bar 4 and which is provided at its forward extremity with the yoke Y having its arms 11 pivotally engaged intermediate their lengths with the free end portions of the upstanding arms 6. The free extremities of the arms 11 have pivotally connected therewith the short links or bars 12 which are also pivotally engaged with the members 9 hereinbefore referred to. By this. arrange ment itwill be seen that upon moving the rod 10 vertically, the forward or entering edge of the scraper Swill be adjusted relative to the ground overwhich the same traverses. By moving the rod 10 upwardly the scraper is caused to engage the ground in order to obtain a load and after being properly loaded downward movement of the rod 10 elevates the forward or entering edge of the scraper in order to maintain the load. The rear portion of the pole or bar 4 is provided with the upstanding rack 14 with which the rod 10 coacts so that said rod may be locked at various positions with the occasions of practice.

15 denotes a bell crank lever pivotally engaged at its heel with a sleeve or casting 3 and said lever 15 is mounted for swinging movement in a vertical plane. The arm of the lever 15 engages the outer face of the rear wall 16 of the scraper so that when rearward upward movement is imparted to the upper arm of the lever 15 the scraper S will be tilted in a manner to discharge the load carried thereby.

As herein disclosed the free extremity of Copies of this patentmay beobtai-ned for the upper arm of the bell crank lever 15 has engaged therewith the rod 17 which extends rearwardly of the pole'or bar 4 and has its opposite end portion suitably connected with the upstanding lever 19 carried by the pole or bar 4. The lever 19 is provided with a conventional latch mechanism 20 coacting with the rack 21 carried by the pole or bar 4.

The'outer or rear end portion of the pole or bar 4 has suitably engaged therewith the platform 22 and also engaged with the pole or bar 4 at a predetermined point inwardly of the platform 22 is an evener bar 23 having secured to the opposite end portions thereof the members 24 of a desired number. The axle 1 has secured to the opposite end portions thereof the chains 25 or the like which are adapted to be engaged with the neck yokes of a draft team.

I also find it of advantage to engage with the sleeves or castings 3 the rearwardly directed brace rods 26 which are also suitably engaged with the bar or pole 4 at a predetermined point rearwardly of the axle 1.

From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a scraper con.-

I structed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious vthat my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departin from the principies and spirit thereof an for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

1 I claim:

1. A scraper comprising an, axle, a pair of forwardly directed'arms carried by the axle, a scraper pivotally engaged therewith, upstanding arms carried by the axle, a yoke having its arms pivotally engaged intermediate their lengths with said upstanding arms, the outer extremities of the arms of the yoke being engaged with the scraper, a bar extending rearwardly from the axle, and means carried by the bar and coacting with the yoke for holding said yoke against swinging movement.

2. A scraper comprising an axle, a pair of forwardly directed arms carried by the axle, a scraper pivotally engaged therewith, up

standing arms carried by the axle, a yoke having its arms pivotally engaged intermediate their lengths with said upstanding arms, the outer extremities of the arms of the yoke being engaged with the scraper, a bar extending rearwardly from the axle, means carried bythe bar and coacting with the yoke for holding said yoke against swinging movement, and means coacting with the scraper and operable independently of the-yoke for imparting swinging movement to the scraper.

3. A scraper comprising an axle, a pair of forwardly directed arms carried by the axle, a scraper pivotally engaged therewith, up' standing arms carried by the axle, a yoke 'having its arms pivotally engaged inter mediate their lengths with said upstanding arms, theouter extremities of the arms of the yoke being engaged withthe scraper, a bar extendin rearwardly from the axle,

means carrie by the bar and coacting with the yoke for holding said yoke against swinging movement, and a hitching means carried by the outer end portion of the rearwardly directed bar.- i

4; A scraper comprising an axle, a pair of forwardly directed arms carried by the axle, a scraper pivotally engaged therewith, a yoke supported by the axle for swinging movement in a vertical direction, links pivotally engaged with the outer end portions of the arms of the yoke, said links being also pivotally engaged with the scraper, the pivotal connection of each of the links with the scraper being common to-one-of'the arms of the yoke, and means operable independently of the yoke for imparting swinging movement to the scraper. v
