W STATES THOMAS o. sonmha,
sYLvhNIA.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, THOMAS O. SOHRADER, a citizen of the United States, Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in of which the following y invention has relation to a latch for closing refrigerator doors among other types of doors; and in such connection it relates to the particular onstructive arrangement of the same. I
The principal objects of my invention are first, to provide a latch with a bolt andan operating lever-handle to latch the door in either the raised or lowered position of the handle by manual pressure exerted against thereby cause the provide a latch in which the coiled spring thereof in the compressed condit'on of the same firmly holds the bolt of the latch so that by pressure exerted manually against the door will automatically lock the arranged with the keeper. to thus seeurel door; and third, to provide a late so; that the coiled spring thereof in of the spring becoming disarranged or en, the operatin ley'er-handle of the or engage the late boltfrom or with the keeper tothus instantly open or close the door.
The nature and scope as well as characteristic'fe'atures of my invention will be more fully understood tlon takenin connection with the accomfront elevational view of a emb tures of my invention.
Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional view through the incasement for a latch for a door of my said invention, showing the detail arrange- Figure .1, is a Fig. 3, is a side elevational view partly in broken section, showing the latching member extendin through a slotted wall of the incasement t erefor and the integral cam of the latching member and p the .coiled spring, the latter shownin an expanded con- Specifioation of Letters Patent. Flg. 4, is a front end view of the incased latch, with the operating lever-handle, the latchmg member being shownin a shifted condition with the operating lever handle elevated, whereby upon pressure exerted against or slamming of thedoor the latch Wlll snap under the keeper-head in the manner for example, as shown in Fig. 1.
ig. 5, is a rear elevational view of the internal arrangement of the latching element and operating lever-handle.
Fig. 6, is a similar view of a slightly modifi d form of the latching member cam, vided with a recess for said handle therein, her and I F ig. 7 is a side elevational view of the keeper, for the latching member.
in this instance proengaging the lug of for shifting said mem- Referring to the drawings a, is a door and a a door frame surrounding the same. The frame (1 is provided with a keeper a, having an inclining offset head a, and a rear projection forming a stop or rest a,"for puroperating lever-handle and CORPORATION orrmmposes tobe presently explained. b, is an mcasement provided with end base seats I) and b, for securing the same to the door a. The incasement is provided with a front oblong vertical slot 6 and with a semi-- circular slot 6 in Oneof the sidewalls of.

are provided fully explained.
pro ects through the semi-circular slot 6', and is rovided with a "cam 25,
for purposes to be presently side. walls of the casing b, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. To the. forked portion of the cam b, is pivoted aslotted connecting rod a coiled spring a; the opposite end of said rod is mounted on a rear "spindle or pin 6 fixed. to the side walls of the casing b, as clearlyshown in Fi 5.
the rear portion of the latch cam b, and at the opposite end against the s indle or pin 6 The operatin lever-han e d, in Its preferably curved orm extends throu h the vertical slot 6 in the front of the casing b, and which lever-handle is operable to revolve partially the cam b, to thereby actuatethe latching member 6, in the slot 6',
The latching member abuts at one end against.

The lever-handle d, is connected with the latch cam b by means of a link b", -for positively actuat-'- "111g movement in substantially thearc" of a circle through the slot 11 of the incasement b, to permit of the setting and holding of the said member to the rear rest at of, the keeperpression of the, spring 0, to be released and adapted due to door into an open in a forward direction from thesaid resta, beneath the head a of the keeper 41 The latching-member as thus arranged vcan be manipulated for locking the door "in either the lifted or If, in its expanded position with the latching member 6*, engaged by the head a of the keeper a, will hold the door a, in a tightly closed condition against the frame or The operating lever-handle d, is arranged as shown in Fig. 5, spanning the pin or spindle b and on which the latch-cam b is movably mounted. The extension of the handle 01, is held in required alining relationship on the rear spindle or in b", by
means of a collarv 6 applied t ereto, as Fig. 5. This handlefis so clearly shown in arranged as to be adapted to release the latching member from its en agement with the keeper-head a whether t e camspring is in a good working condition or not, by simply actuating the same in an upward direction' which opens the door a; moreover, it is position should the door become swollen or tightened from any cause,

The latch of Fig. 6 in" constructive arrangement is the same as hereinbefore desave-that the latch-cam in this inwith a side lug d cess for thereby operating sa1d cam and the same and thus to provide a range of lowered position of the handle d. Furthermore the latch-cam spring a cross-pin,
its arrangement to force the shifting the latching member an integral part of the said cam. In all other res ects the latch is the same as illustrated in igs. 1 to 5 inclusive.
. Having described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. The combination, in a latch, of a keeper and a cam having a bolt formed therewlth and engaging said keeper, a cross-pin, a rod mounted on said. pin
pivotally connected with said pin and a link connected with said handle and cam opposite the position of thebolt of said cam, substantially as and for the purposes described. i
2. The combination in a latch, of a keeper and a cam having a bolt arranged to engage said keeper, a cross-pin, a rod '-slidably mounted onsaid pin and connected with said cam, a spring mounted on said rod, the terminals whereof respectively, said pin and cam, an operating lever-handle pivotally connected with said pin and a link connected with said handle and cam opposite the position of the bolt of said cam, substantially as and for the purposes described. a 1
3. The combination, in a latch, of akeeper and a cam having a bolt arranged to engage said keeper, said cam provided with a recess, a rod mounted on said pm and connected with said cam, a spring mounted on said rod, the terminals whereof respectively, bear against said pin and cam, an operating lever-handle having a lug arranged to engage the recess of said cam, and said handle pivotally connected with said pin, substantially .as and for the purposes In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
