OILIN G DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed .T une 6, 1917. Serial No. 173,215.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ErrA H. RYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Oiling Device, of which the following. is a specification.
This invention relatgs to an oiling device particularly designed `for `lubricating the picker rod of a drop box loom.
This rod supports the rawhide picker which is moved rapidly along the rod each time a shuttle is picked from the associated dropy boxes. It has been the common practice to require the operator tooil this rod manually as often as deemed necessary, a practice which, however, does not produce uniform lubrication. f
It is the object of my present invention to provide an Vimproved device for oiling the rod automatically, thereby insuring sufficient lubrication and at the same time avoiding possible damage from excess of oil.
To the attainment of this object I have provided an oil reservoir-mounted on the lay and a device to convey oil from said reservoir to the picker rod, said device normally engaging Said rod but being movable therefrom by the picker on itsI back or re-l turn stroke.
An important feature of my invention relates to the provision of means whereby oil may be deposited on the picker rod by the oiling device, but will not be deposited on the picker itself. A further feature of my invention relates to an improved locking device by means oif' which the oiling lever is held in operative position while, at the same time, it may be conveniently removed therefrom. I also provide means for conveying oil through the body of the oiling member from the oil reservoir to the picker rod, while at the same time I restrict the flow of oil to the exact amount required.
vMy invention further relates to certain arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly vpointed out in the appended claims. n
A preferred form' of my invention 1s shown in the drawings, in which-l- Figure lis a top plan view of the oil- .ing device and a portion of the associated plcker Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line 3-3 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken along the line 4-4 in Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but Showing the parts in a different position.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a portion of a lay 10, a picker stick 1l, a picker 12, and a picker rod 13, the vpicker being loosely connected to the picker stick by a strap 14. These parts are all of the usual construction and form no part of my invention. It will be understood that the rawhide picker 12 extends through a slot 15 in the lay end to aposition in which it can engage the active shuttle in the drop boxes.
An Oil reservoir 20 is formed on or secured to the front of the lay 10, said reservoir being provided with a ycover plate 21. An oiling lever 22 is provided with a depending portion 23 pivoted in a vertical bearing 24 formed inthe reservoir 20, and preferably integral therewith.
A wick 25 extends through a passage in the 'oiling lever 22 and* depending portion 23, the lower end of the wick extending into the oil reservoir 20 and the outer end of the wick projecting slightly through an opening in the outer end of the lever 22. This outer end of the wick normallyy engages the side of the picker rod 13 as shown in Fig. 4, thus depositing a small amount of oil upon the rod.
The lever 22 is also provided with a rearward projection 26 having an opening 27 through which extends loosely a locking pin 28.v The pin 28 is provided with a head 29 normally seated in a shallow recess 30 in the lay 10, and a coil spring 31 surrounds the pin 28 between the head 29 and the extension 2G. A cross pin 32 prevents dislodgment of the pin 28. With this construction it will be evident that the spring 31 yieldin'gly forces the oiling lever toward the picker rod, thus bringing the end of the wick 25 `into engagement with the rod.
The outer or rod engaging end ofthe lever 22 is further provided with a pair of lugs 33 and with an out-turned guiding portion 34. The portion 34 and the lugs 33 engage the picker 13 as it moves rearwardly Patented May 7, 1918.
on its return stroke, and the oiling lever is thus moved outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 5. It will be noted that the lugs 33 are so formed that the end'oil the wick 25 is spaced outwardly from the picker when in the position shown in Fig. 5 so that no oil can be deposited on the picker, while in the position shown in Fig. 4 the lugs 33 pass above and below the rod 13, thus permitting the end of the wick 25 to engage the rod.
When itis desired to remove the oiling lever to permit replenishment of the oil supply or for any other purpose, the locking pin 28 may be drawn outwardly until it clears the recess 30, after which the oiling lever can be lifted out of its bearing in the reservoir 20.
Having described my linvention it will be evident that I have provided a very simple device lby which the picker rod may be oiled automatically every time that the picker is operated to throwa shuttle from the associated boxes. The amount of oil deposited is limited to the small quantityl required, and the travel of the picker the entire length of the rod 'is in no way interfered with.
Having thus described my invention, it will be Aevident that changes and modifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spiritand scope of my invention asset forth in the claims, and l do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is,-
1. In a loom, in combination, a lay, a picker rod mounted thereon, and an oiling Qopis of this patent may be obtained. for
device for said rod comprising `an oil reservoir mounted on said lay, a rigid metallic oiling member pivotally supported by sal reservoir and having a portion extending downward therein, `said member normally engaging said picker rod and being movable in a plane above the level of said reservoir into and out of such engagement` and material extending through said metallic member effective to convey oil from said reservoir through said member to said rod.
2. An oiling device tor a loom picker rod comprising a pivoted lever yieldingly engaging said rod, and means to supply oil through said lever to said rod, said lever having a rod-engaging portion land having lugs on each side of said portion effective to prevent engagement of said rod-engaging portion with the picker.
'3. An oiling devic for a loom picker rocl comprising an oil reservoir, a pivoted lever, means to convey oil from said reservoir through said lever to said rod, a locking device for said lever, and a spring effective to hold said device in locking position and also to force said lever yieldingly against said rod.
4;. An oiling device for a loom picker rod comprising an oiling member normally engaging said rod .but movable outwardly therefrom by the picker, and means to supply oil to said member, said member being provided with means preventing the deposit ofoil on said picker when engaged thereby.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto afiXed'my signature.
