WATER-MOTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May '7, 1918.
Application filed May 26, 1917. Serial No. 171,309.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE C. RIDDLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riddle. in the county of Owyhee and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Motors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in water motors and has relation more particularly to a device of this general charactor of a rotary type, and it is an object of the invention to provide a water motor adapted to be operated under the influence of a flowing stream.
It is also an object of the invention'to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the rotor may be adjusted vertically to compensate for the rise or fall of the flowing stream with which it coacts.
Furthermore, the invention has for an object to provide a device of this general character having blades or paddles mounted for swinging movement together with means for causing said paddles to assume an open or operative position when the same has reached a predetermined point in its travel with the rotor.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved water motor whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and.
otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is afragmentary view in elevation with portions broken away illustrating a water motor constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of my improved motor as herein embodied, one of the stub shafts being shown in section; and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective of an end portion of one of the paddles as herein included.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings G denotes guide ways'adapted to be disposed downwardly through a stream of flowing water and coacting with said guides are the slides 1 having their upper ends connected by a cross head 2 or the like. Operatively engaged with the cross head 2 is an operating member 3 for raising and lowering the slides 1 in accordance with the requirements of practice as necessitated by the rise or fall of a flowing stream.
Rotatably supported by the lower end portions of the slides 1 are the stub shafts 4 suitably secured to the heads 5 of the rotor R. The rotor R is hollow and preferably cylindrical in form and produced from heavy boiler iron.
Coacting with the periphery of the rotor R and extending longitudinally thereof for substantially the entire length of the rotor are the paddles P, said paddles P being in predetermined circumferentially spaced relation. The inner longitudinal margin of each of the paddles P is hingedly connected as at 6 with the rotor R and said paddle is also substantially concavo-convex in cross section for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident.
The opposite ends of each of the paddles P adjacent its inner margin, is provided with angularly disposed lugs or wings 7 adapted to limit the outward movement of the paddle especially as imposed thereon by the flowing stream. The lugs or wings 7 are provided with the outwardly directed pins or fingers 8 adapted to be engaged by the upstanding trip members 9 carried by the I inwardly directed arms 10 fixed to thelower portions of the slides 1. It is to be noted that the trip members 9 are so positioned as to engage the fingers or pins 8 after the paddles have passed their horizontal or their downward movement so that said paddles will automatically be caused to assume an open or operative position. It is also to be noted that the trip members 9 are substantially semicircular in form.
In practice the rotor R is adapted to be submerged and as thepaddles P are raised the same will fall by gravity'into a closed position and will maintain such position until positively thrown into an open position through the medium of the trip members 9, hereinbefore referred to, so that the lowermost paddles may have requisite coaction with the flowing stream to efiect' the desired movement of the rotor R.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a water motor constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason 1 do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising, in combination, guide ways, slides engaged within the guideways and provided with means for moving the same, a rotor rotatably supported by the slides, paddles hingedly connected with said rotor, a wing carried by each of said paddles and coacting with the rotor for limiting the outward swinging movement of the paddles, an outstanding finger carried by the wing, and a trip member supported by one of the slides and engageable with the finger car- 3 ried by the wing of each of the paddles for throwing the paddle into open position.
2. A. device of the character described comprising, in combination, guideways, slides engaged within the guideways and 40 provided with means for moving the same, a rotor rotatably supported by the slides, paddles hingedly connected with said rotor, a wing carried by each of said paddles and coacting with the rotor for limiting the outward swinging movement of the paddles, an outstanding finger carried by the wing, and a trip member supported by one of the slides, said trip member being provided with an upstanding arouate portion engageable with the finger carried by the wing of each of the paddles for throwing said shoulder in open position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. 5t
GEORGE C. RIDDLE.
