citizen of the United States, residing at South Royalston, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have inventeda new and useful Shuttle-Check of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a shuttle check of the type in which increased pressure is applied to the shuttle throughthe shuttle binder as "the shuttle approaches its final boxed position.
Such checks as heretofore designed have continuously increased the binder pressure until the shuttle is brought to rest, thus requiring that the shuttle shall be picked from the box against the maximum binder resistance, a construction which has obvious disadvantages. y
It is the object of my present invention to improve the construction of shuttle checks of .this type by providing devices which maintain a uniform increased pressure of the binder on the shuttle during the final boxing of the shuttle, after the speed of the shuttle has been materially reduced.
With this general object in viewan important feature of my invention in the preferred form relates to the provision of a shuttle actuated member having a cam portion operative to apply-increasingpressure to the shuttle through the binder, and having also a straight or uniform portion adapted to maintain a constant binder pressure during the final movement of the shuttle to boxed position.
Further features of my invention relate to the provision of yielding connections be tween said shuttle actuated member and the shuttle binder, and also to means for adjustingthe final binder pressure.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

ated by a picker stick 12, all of the usual construction. The type of picker is, however, immaterial. The rod 11 is rigidly supported upon the layl3 to which is also secured the plate 14: forming the rear side of the-shuttle box.
The front face of the shuttle is engaged by a binder 15 riveted or otherwise secured to a member 16 pivoted at 17 to a projection on the lay 13. An arm 18 is also mounted to swing about the pivot 17 and is yieldingly connected to the extension 19 of the member 16 by a bolt 20 and acompression spring 21. At its outer end the arm 18 is provided with a roll 22 positioned for engagement by the cam-shaped head of ashuttle'actuated member 23 pivoted at 24 (Fig. 2) to a bracket 25 supported by the lay 13. The upper rear portion of the member 23 may be provided with a covering 26 of leather or other wear-resistin a materiah this portion of the member 23 being engaged on one side by the picker 10 and on the opposite side by a hunter or stop 27 fixed in the end of the lay.
The cam-shaped head of the member 23 comprises an inclined portion 28 and a straight portion 29. A spring 30 (Fig. 3) is connected at one end to the bracket 25 and at its opposite end to a collar 31 on the pivot shaft 24 of the member 23, the spring norinally moving the member away from the end of the shuttle boxuntil it engages an adjustable stop screw 32 (Fig. 2). The usual binder spring 33 is provided for applying normal pressureto the binder 15.
As the shuttle S enters the shuttle box it i first encounters this normal pressure of the binder 15 by which its speed is reduced until it forces the picker 10 against the leather facing of the member 23. The member 23 is then moved toward the end of the shuttle box and the cam surface 28 of said member.
Itiwill thus appear that the binder pressure is increased during the first part of the engagement of the member 23 with the roll 22, but that as the speed of the shuttle decreases further increase of pressure 1s avoided,the binder malntaining a practically uniform pressure upon the shuttle during'its final movement to boxed position. Furthermore, the spring 21 acting through the cam roll 22 and cam surface 28 causes the pivote'd member 23 to directly resist the move mentof the picker 10 and shuttle S. Such resistance diminishes abruptly when the cam roll engages the straightsurface 29 on the member 23. V l I This method of applying pressure to the shuttle is found to possess important advantages in operation, particularly by reducing the maximum or final binder pressure, and thus reducing the power required to pick the shuttle. v
Having thus described my invention, it will be evident that changes and modifica tions can be made therein by those skilled in e art without departing from the spir and Scope-of my invention as set forth in the claims, and I do not wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed, but what I claim is z I 1. In a loom, in combination, ashuttle, a shuttle box, a binder, a picker, a member movable with said picker, and a yielding connection between said member and said binder, said connection including means through which movement of said member with said picker is effective to first apply increasing pressure to said shuttle through said binder and to thereafter apply uniform pressure during the final boxing of the shuttle.
