Be it known that l, V. a citizen of the United States, residing at ilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny State of Pennsylvania, have invente and useful llm rovements in Fluid-Pressure Brakes, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention'relates to safety car control equipments, and more particularly to a double end-equipment, in which the apparatus may be controlled from either end of the car. p I I Une object of my invention is to provide improved-means for insuring an application of the brakes when the operator. goes to the op osite end of the car. other object ofmy invention is to provide means for insuring that the brakes can be released when the operator goes to the other end of the'wr.
Another object of my invention is to provide a controller handle which cannot be removed or left in any position without causing an application of the brakes.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following more detailed description of the invention. r
In the accompanying drawing, the single figure is a diagrammatic view, partly in section, of a safety car control equipment embodying my invention.
As shown in the drawing, the equipment may comprise an emergency valve device 1, abrake c linder 2 a main reservoir 3, a circuit brea er cylinder etfor operating the circuit breaker switch 5, a controller 6 and brake valves 7, at opposite ends of the car;
The emergency valve device 1 may comprise a casing having a piston chamber 8 connected to brake pipe 9 and containing piston 10and having a valve chamber 11 connected by passage 12 to main reservoir pipe 13- and containing slide valve 14.
The controller 6 is provided with a removable controller handle 15 having a rearwardly extending forked finger 16 adapted to engage under the head of a plunger bolt .17 which is acted upon by a coilspring 1.8 and when released is adapted to engage one end of a pivoted lever 19, the opposite end of which engages the stem of a double seating pilot valve 20.
The'pilot valve 20 in one position opens communication from main reservoir pipe 13 and to a pipe 21 which leads to a passage 22 in the emergency valve casing comm nicating withone side of a relay valve 23. lln the munication is opened from pipe 21 to a pipe- 24: which communicates through a cut-0d valve device 25 with the circuit breaker cylinder 4:.
The cut-ofi valve device 25 comprises a casing containing a valve piston 26 subject on one side to the pressure of a coil spring 27 and normally establishing communicationthrough pipe 24 by way of passage 28. The
opposite exposed area of the valve piston 2L is open to the straight air pipe 29.

While running, the operator holds the controller handle lovdepressed, as shown in the drawing, so that the double seating valve 20 cuts ofi communication from pipe 21 to the pipe 24: and opens communication from pipe 13 to pipe 21, so that fluid from the main reservoir 3 is supplied to the top of relay valve 23 and holds same seated.
If the operator releases the controller handle 15, the plunger bolt 17 is actuated by the sprin 18, so .as to engage the lever 19 which Is then operated to shift the double seating valve 20, so that the supply of fluid is cut off from the relay valve 23 and fluid is vented therefrom to pipe 24 whence it flows through passage 28 to the circuit oot lllO
breaker cylinder 4, actuating thepiston 39 therein to effect the shifting of the circuit breaker switch 5,. so as to open the power circuit. Y
When piston 39 moves out to a certain point, it uncovers a port 40, so that fluid 1s 1 then vented from pipe :24 to the atmosphere and consequently from the top of relay. valve 23. Fluid at brake pipepressure su plied through passage 41' to the under side of the valve 23 then opens the same, and

The reduction in brake pipe pressure thereupon causes the movement of the emergency piston 10 to emergency position; in which fluid is supplied from the valve chamber 11 and the main reservoir 3; directly to the brake cylinder 2.
If the operator desiresitogo to the o posite end of the car, .he.-' removes the controller handle 15 and this causes an application ofjthe brakes as abovedescribed, this action being desired, so as to prevent acci' dents due to the car --running away, espe ciallyif the car happens to be on a grade,
At the opposite endof the car, when the operator inserts the controller handle lease and depresses same, the double seating valve 20 is operated to close the communication for venting fluid from the relay valve 23,
while communication is opened so that fluid is supplied from themain reservoir to the pipe 21. The flow of fluid in pipe21 acts on the double check valve 34 to cut off com munication to the pilot valve 20 at the nonoperating end of the car and then flows to the top of relay valve 23, s0 that same is shifted to cut off the exhaust port 42 from the brake pipe 9 and thus permit the brake pipe to be recharged with fluid-underpressure when the brake valve is turned to reposition, so that the brakes Will be released. If the operator wishes to use his hands for any purpose, he may release the controller handle without effecting an emercauses the prompt movement of the valve to its lower seat, in which'communication is cut off. through pipe 24 to the circuit breaker cylinder 4. It will now be evident that when the operator removes his hand from the controller handle, while the" double seating valve 20 will open communication from pipe 21 to pipe 24, fluid will not a straight airlapplication of the As soon as said be vented from the relay valve 23 and consequently an emergency application of the brakes will not take place.
While running, the operator may release the controller handle without effecting an application of the brakes, if he first depresses the pedal 33 with his foot.
The movement of pedal 33 operates double seating valve. 31 to 'cut oif communication through pipe 21 to the pilot valve 20, so that the opening of said valve upon releasing the controller handle will not be effective to vent air from the relay valve 23, as will be evident.
The movement of double seating valve 31 also operates to open communication from the pilot valve portion of pipe 21 to an exhaust port-.43, so that fluid is vented from this portion of the pipe to prevent possible operation of the circuit breaker piston 39 35 by fluid in said pipe when the pilot valve 20 is opened upon release of the controller handle 15.
In order to prevent any withdrawal movement of the-controller handle 15 without lifting same, a pin 44 is arranged in position to engage the finger 16 of the handle, so that in order to disen age the handle from its'pivot pin 45 3.1K? permit the removal of the handle, the handle must be lifted, with the pin 44 acting as a fulcrum to compel such movement.
The purpose of this is to prevent the partial Withdrawal of the handle and the possible blocking of same by the operator with the intention of preventing an application of the brakes when the handle is released.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- 1. In a safety car control equipment, the combination with means operated upon leaving one end of the car for effecting an application of the brakes, of means operated at the other end of the car for cutting out the first means to permit the release of the brakes.
' 2. In a safety car control equipment, the combination with means operated upon leaving one end of the car for venting fluid to effect an application of the brakes, of means operated at the other end of the car for closing communication to the first means to permit the release of the brakes.

6. In a safety car control equipment, the combination with a brake pipe, a relay valve for venting fluid from the brake pipe to effeet anapplieation of the brakes, of a controller handle and a pilot valve operated upon depressing the handle for supplying fluid to said relay valve and upon releasing said handle for venting fluid from said relay valve.
7. In a safety car control equipment, thecombination with a brake pipe, a relay valve for venting fluid from the brake pipe to cflect an application of the brakes, of a controller handle, a pilot valve operated by said handle for supplying fluid to said relay valve, and a double check valve operated by the flow of fluid from the pilot valve atone end of the car for cutting off communication to the pilot'valve at the opposite end of the ear.
8. In a safety car control equipment, the combination with means operated by varying the fluid pressure thereon for eflecting an application of the brakes, of a controller handle adapted upon release at one end for varying the fluid pressure on said means and a double check valve operated by fluid under pressure upon depressin' the controller handle at the opposite en of the car for cutting ofi' communication through which the fluid pressure is varied on said means at the other end of the car.
9. In a safety ear control equipment, the combination with a fluid operated device for controlling the power circuit and means operated by venting fluid therefrom for effecting an application of the brakes, of a controller handle, a valve operated upon releasing said handle for venting fluid from said means to said fluid operated device, and a cut-off valve device for controlling communication from said valve to said device.
10. In a safety car control equipment, the combination with fluid pressure controlled meahs for effecting anapplication of the brakes, of a controller handle, a pilot valve operated upon release of the handle for varying the fluid pressure on said means, and a manually operated valve for controlling communication from said means to said pilot valve.
11. In a safety car control equipment, the combination with a controller handle adapted upon release to eifect an application of the brakes, of means for preventing the removal of said handle unless the brakes are applied.
12. In a safety car control equipment, the combination with a controller handle adapted to be depressed and operating upon lifting thehandle to eflect an application of the brakes, of means for preventing removal of the handle unless the same is lifted my hand.
