JEREMIAH STICKNEY, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSESHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,497, dated May 7,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH STICKNEY, of Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horseshoes; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of
' leather, or two plates firmly cemented together,
and provided with steel heel and toe calks, as hereinafter set forth.
In carrying out my invention I take the thickest and best-tanned sole-leather, and, by means of dies or cutters, out or stamp out the blank or shoe of the required size. This blank is next reduced to an eventhickness and passed between compressingrollers, so as to thoroughly condense it. The nail-holes are next punched, and the heel and toe calks are affixed to the shoe by having their shanks passed through the leather and upset on the under side thereof, and, finally, the edge of the shoe is condensed and polished.
In the said drawing, A denotes the shoe; a a. a, the toe-calks; b b and c c, the heel-calks; and d d, the nail-holes.
If preferable, the toe and heel calks may consist of a single piece of steel, having shanks to extend through and be upset on the inner side of the shoe and the outer face of the shoe may be provided with any desirable number of metallic studs of the character as shown in the drawing.
Having described my invention, what I claim is as follows:
As an improved article of manufacture, a horseshoe made of the material and in manner as specified, and provided with steel or metallic toe and heel calks, or either of them, as shown and described.
JEREMIAH STIOKNEY.
