ATENT OFFICE.
HOLLOWAY W. MATHEWS, OF FRENCHTOVN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAND-ROLLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,471, dated May 7, 1872.
Specication describing a new and Improved Land Roller, invented by HOLLOWAY W. MATHEWs, of Frenchtown, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey.
Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of my improved land-roller. Fi g. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same on the line c c of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new manner of connecting` the back frame of the third roller to the main or front frame holding the two front cylinders of a land-roller. The object is to permit the application of a limbered tongue, whereby much strain is taken from the horses necks.
The land-rollers with jointed back sections haveheretofore been always made with rigidlyconnected tongues, and occasioned, therefore, a greater strain on the draft animals than would be the case with a limbered tongue. The difficulty of applying the latter is that by the double joint the front section ofthe roller would become wholly unmanageable; still more so the back section. In order to overcome this difficulty I have provided a joint which will make the back section rigidly connected as far as the up-and-down adjustment is concernednot otherwise. This will permit the use of a limbered tongue, since the entire frame-work back of it is rigidly connected for all practical purposes.
Ain the drawing represents the front frame of the land-roller, carrying the two front rollers B B. C is the back roller, hung in the back frame D. An L-shaped bar, E, connects the front and back frames A D. This bar is, with its long horizontal arm a, swiveled in the middle of the front frame, and extends backward under the middle of the back frame, as shown. The short vertical arm b of the bar E projects upward from the same, and is swiveled in the front of the frame D. This arrangement permits the frame D to swing to either side on the short arm b, and to incline to either side on the long arm a, While vertically it is rigidly connected with the frame A. Up and down, therefore, the frame D will swing, together with A, as though the two were one, While in every other direction the back frame has independent play. The tongue F can therefore be hinged to the frame A, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The connecting-rod E a b, applied to the frames A D, as and for the purpose described.
