To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. GALLY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vVeb-Guiding Devices, ot which the following is a specification.
In my prior Patent #1,109,578, September 1st, 1914, is shown a floating member adapted to actuate either or two valves set at the two sides of the centering arm of the said iloating member, but normally out of contact therewith', the ports to the shifting mechanism pneumatics being in a iXed seat piece and normally covered by the two valves, the floating memberbeing controlled to central position by two detector fingers engaging the two edges of the music sheet. As in some instances the available space is not as convenient for this form, as is the usual upright player piano, as for a player grand piano with the music rolls positioned in a condensed space near the wrest plank as herein shown, it is then desirable to alter the shape or' the automatic tracking device, as will now be set forth, although the float ing seat and other special features of the present tracking'devices are not limited to grand pianos, but are to be applied wherever desirable. are also shown the yoke :trame of my prior Patent #1,112,061, September 29, 19141, as a convenient means for' its purposes, although other means may be employed for this part of the apparatus.

Counterweights 18, 19 at the ends of the arms 1, 5 that are yextended beyond their pivots G, 7, partly counterbalance the weight of the inner ends of the arms 4, 5, and
thereby preventany over heavy pressure of the contact parts of the arms 1, 2 against the edges of the music sheet 3, these weights preferably being ustable along their arms 4, 5. The eounterweight 17 of the seat arm 13 and seat 12 is made adjustable on the outwardly extended partof the arm 13, and is regulated suiliciently heavy so that the seat 12, and ports 10, 11, will always be certain to follow up to the valve parts 8,'
9, but not heavy enough to overcome the weight of either one alone of the arms 4, 5 and their valve parts 3, 9 when the valve part of the other arm is raised trom its port of the seat 12.
lWhen a music sheet 3 is diverted a trifle to the right of its true central line oic travel, it will cause one of the two arms as 5, to lift a shade higher than the other, as 4, at which time the lower positioned valve parts 8 and 9 of the two arms 4 and 5, must have its corresponding port 10 or 11 kept closed to it by the overbalanced weight of the counterweight 17, but the weight oi' the arm 4 whose valve part 8, is then closed to port 10 must be suthcient to prevent any tendency of the weight 17 pressing the seat 12 up so strongly against the closed valve part 8 and its arm 4 as to throw the corresponding contact part of its vertical arm 1 away from its contact with its edge of the music sheet 3, as that would destroy the centralizing reading from the two contact arms 1, 2, both of which must always remain in contact with the edges oi the sheet to insure correct reading to the central line of travel of the sheet. lWhen the music diverges to the left the action of the arms, etc., is the opposite of the foregoing.
When the music sheet 3 is traveling to its true central line of travel, both ports 8, 9, are closed against the valve parts 10, 11 of the arms 4, 5, but whenever thev sheet moves to a slight degree to the right or left from that central travel, both of the contact arms 1, 2, are moved in that one direction, causing the horizontal arm 4 or 5, of that side to which the sheet has moved, to raise its valve parts 8 or 9, away from its corresponding port 10 or 11, while at the same time the other arm 4, 5, has been allowed to drop and press the seat 12 down, thereby doubling the quicknessof opening of the valve part which has started from its seat. Thus a very quick action is secured.
To prevent a fluttering of the shitting parts of the apparatus, it is best to construct the valve parts 8, 9 so that they will have a slight lost motion between the start of that end of anarm 4, 5, away from the seat 12, which is accomplished in the present showing by hinging the valvey parts 8, 9, at their front ends, and bending their rear ends up and over the corresponding overlying parts of the arms 4, 5, the valve parts 8, 9, thus lying horizontally under the end parts of the arms 4, 5, and pressed against the said arms when the ports 10, 11 oi the seat 12 are closed against the said valve parts, as in Fig. 5, and that when either one of the said arms 4, 5, has its distance increased from the seat 12, the corresponding valve part 8 or 9 will'remain resting on the port 10 or 11 until a slight motion ot' the arm 4 or 5, has occurred, when that arm will then contact the upper part of the bend of the valve part and lift that valve part from its port as shown in Fig. 6.
The valve ports 10, 11, lead by the tubes 15, 16 through flexible tubes 20, 21, to the usual pneumatics of valves at 22, 23, said valves being normally inactive, but when one or" these valves is actuated by the opening 01": the corresponding one of the ports 10, 11, said valve 22 or 23 energizes the pneumatic motor 24 or 25, which said motors have suitable connections by wires 26 and 27 to the arm 23 of a vertical rock shaft 29 extended from this pneumatic motor set below the keybed 30 of the casing to the upper arm 31 of this shaft 29 which arm 31 is at a proper position of level with the music roll spindles 32, 33, the shifting of the said spindles 32, 33, being accomplished by these pneumatic motors and connections through a linal connecting rod 34 led from the arm 31 of the vertical shaft 29 to the unitary means or yoke 35, which yoke engages both said spindles 32, 33, and with a spring 35 holds these two spindles toward each other, thus engaging and carrying the music roll 37 on which the music sheet 3 is mounted, but leaving the two spindles 32, 33, and the roll 37 free to be moved lengthwise of the spindles and roll to enable the guidance oit' the music sheet 3 to its central line of travel as detected and determined by the two detector arms 1, 2 contacting the two edges of the sheet and controlling its central travel by means of the various parts already described.
r1`he particular yoke 35 and other shifting parts as shown and described are of the very desirable form of applicantsprior Patent #1,109,573, already mentioned, but other connections and shifting means may be used in their place, or va ious other modifications or equivalents be employed, and yet the present invention be retained; and although for convenience the present sho-wing has been that of an embodiment in a player piano, it is to be understood that theV present invention is not limited to any particular apparatus, but is intended to be used in any apparatus employing a traveling sheet or web; and it is also understood that electric, hydraulic or mechanical equivalents may be substituted for the pneumatic features hereof as may be suitable for any particular use yto be made of this invention.
Vhat I claim as my invention is 4 l. VVeb-shifting means; two movable detector fingers adapted to be controlled in their position by a traveling web; and controlling connections from the said fingers to the said web-shifting means; the said connections including two initiating elements on a movable member; and each said finger having an element movable therewith and adapted to control the corresponding initiating element of the said movable member, the said movable member adapted to follow the movements of the two said detectors and their said elements.

In a web-guiding device: two detector fingers; two ports; and a valve to each said port; each said valve controlled by a moving part of its corresponding said finger; and a movable seat with which the two said ports are carried7 the said movable seat adapted to follow the movements of the two said detectors and the two said valves.

In a web-guiding device: two detector fingers; two ports, and a valve to each said port; each said valve controlled by a moving part of its corresponding said finger; and a movable seat with which the two said ports are carried, the said movable seat adapt-@dto follow the movements of the two said detectors and the two said valves; pneumatically controlled web-shifting means; and connection from each said port to an element of the said web-shifting means.

In a web-guiding device: two detector ngers; two ports, and a valve to each said port; each said valve controlled by a moving part of its corresponding said finger; and a movable seat with which the two said ports are carried, the said movable seat adapted to follow the movements of the two said detectorsl and the two said valves; pneumatically controlled web-shifting means;
and tubular connections from each said port' 7. In a web-guiding device: two vertical' detector arms vand a horizontal arm fixed with'and extended from each one of the said vertical arms and toward the other said horizontal arm; the two said arms adjacent each other at the ends of their ex tensions; a bearing adjacent .the juncture of the main directions of each vertical arm and its horizontal arm; and a vertically movable member adjacent the adjacent ends of the horizontal arms and having two initiating elements in said member; and a controlling element carried by each said arm and each said element adapted to control the correspondinginitiating element of the said member; webshifting devices; and connections from tliesaid initiating elements to the said web-shifting devices.

In a web-guiding device: two vertical detector arms and a horizontal arm fixed with and extended from each one of the said vertical arms and toward the other said horizontal arm, the two said arms adjacent each other at the ends of their extensions; a bearing adjacent the juncture of the main direction of each vertical arm and its horizontal arm; and a vertically movable member adjacent the adjacent ends lof the horizontal arms and having two initiating elements in said member; and a controlling element carried by each said arm; and each said element adapted to control the correspondin g initiating element of the said meinber; web-shifting devices; and connections from the said elements tothe said webshifting devices.

In a web-guiding device: two vertical detector arms and a horizontal arm xed with and extended from each one of the said vertical arms and toward the other said horizontal arm; thetwo said arms adjacent each other at the ends of their extensions; a bearing adjacent the juncture of the main direction of each vertical arm and its horizontal arm; and a vert-ical movable seat adjacent thc adjacent ends of' the horizontal arms and having two ports in said seat each normally contacted by an adjacent port of the corresponding horizontal arm; and webshifting devices including pneumatics; and tubular connections from the said ports to the said pneumatics.

In a web-guiding device: two vertical detector arms and a horizontal armfixed with and extended from each one of the said vertical arms and toward the other said horizontal arm, the two said arms adjacent each other at the ends of their extensions; a bearing adjacent the juncture of the main direction of each vertical arm and its horizontal arm; and a vertically movable seat adjacent the adjacent ends of the horizontal llO arms andhaving two ports in said seat, and a valve means on each said extension of the said arm adapted to co-act with the corresponding said port; and web-shifting devices including pneumatics; and tubular connections from the said ports to the said pneu- Y matics.

In a web-guiding device: two movable detector Vmeans each having two arms at right angles and a bearing to each said means adjacent the corner of its angle, and one arm of each said'means extended toward the other corresponding arm, and the two said arms adjacent each other at the ends of their said extensions; and a movable seat adjacent the adjacent ends of the said arms and having two kports in said seat, each normally contacted by an adjacent port oit' the corresponding horizontal arm; and web shifting devices including pneumatics; and
tubular connections from the said ports to the said pneumatics.
12. 1n a web-guiding device: two movable detector means each having two arms at right angles and a bearing to each said means adjacent the corner of its angle, and one arm of each said means extended toward the other corresponding arm, and the two said arms adjacent each other at the ends of their said extensions; and a movable seat adjacent the adjacent ends of the said arms and having two ports in said seat; and a valve means on each said extension of the said arm adapted to co-act with the corresponding said port; and web shifting devices including pneumatics; and tubular connections from the said ports to the said pneumatics.

In a web-guiding device: two movable detector means each having two arms at right angles, and a bearing to each said means adjacent the cornerl of its angle, and one arm of each said means extended toward the other corresponding arm, and the two said arms adjacent each other at the ends of their said extensions; and a movable member adjacent the adjacent ends of the said arms and having two initiating elements in said member; and a controlling element carried by each said arm, and each said element adapted to control the corresponding initiating element of the said member; web` shifting devices; and connections from the said initiating elements to the said webshifting devices. f

In a web-guiding device: two movable detector means each having two arms at` right angles, and a bearing to each said means adjacent the corner of its angle, and one arm of each said means extended toward the other corresponding arm, and the two said arms adjacent 'each other at the ends of their said extensions; and a movable member adjacent the adjacent ends of the said arms and having two initiating elements in said member; and a controlling element carried by each said arm, and cach said element adapted to control the corresponding initiating element of the said member; webshifting devices; and connections from the said elements to the said web-shifting devices.

A free-moving swingable valve seat comprising a block having a port therein; a tubular supporting arm connected at one end to the said seat block and to its port; and a pivotal bearing means on which said arm is adapted to swing, the other end of the said tubular supporting arm connected to the said bearing means.
16. A free moving swingable valve scat having a port therein; a tubular supporting arm connected at one end to the said seat and port; and a pivotal bearing means on which said arm is adapted to swing, the other end of the said tubular arm connected to the said bearing means; and a flexible tube connected to that said other end of the said tubular arm adjacent the pivotal axis of the said bearing means.

A :tree moving swingable valve scat having a port therein; a supporting arm connected at one end to the said seat and port; and a bearing means on which said arm is adapted to swing, the other end of the said supporting arm connected to tne said bearing means, a tubular connection combined with said arm and extending from the said seat and port to a place adjacent thc axis of the said bearing means; and a flexible tube connected to the said tubular connection at the said place adjacent the said axis.

A web-guiding detector device with two horizontal arms, each arm having a pivotal bearing; one end of each said arm adjacent an end of the other said arm and having a valve means at that part; a horizontal valve seat arm parallel with one of the valve arms and a pivotal bearing thereto having its axis coincident with the axis of its related valve arm; and a valve scat carried by said valve seat arm and adjacent the two said valve means; and ports in said valve seat adapted to be controlled by the respective said valve means.

A web guiding detector device with two horizontal arms, each arm having a pivotal bearing intermediate its length, and a counterweight at the end of each said arm beyond its pivotal bearing; one end of each said arm adjacent an end of the other said arm and having a Valve means at that part; a horizontal valve seat arm parallel with one of the valve arms and a pivotal bearing thereto having its axis coincident with the axis of its related valve arm; and a valve seat carried by said valve seat arm and adjacent the two said valve means; and ports in said valve seat adapted to be controlled by the respective said valve means; the said valve seat arm extended beyond its pivotal bearing in the direction opposite the valve seat, and a eonnterweight on the said extended part of the said valve seat arm overbalancing the weight of the said valve seat and the part of that arm at the valve seat side of the pivotal bearing; but of less raising power of the valve seat than the load of either one of the valve arms on the said valve seat.

A tracker-bar; a take-up spool below the tracker bar; engaging spindles above the tracker bar; two detector arms extended vertically outside of and adjacent to the two ends oit the said takeup spool; a pivotal bearing to each said arm lower than the said take-up spool; angle extensions from the lower part of each said arm toward the other and beneath the said take-up spool; and web shifting controlling elements beneath said take-up spool and adapted to co-act with the said extensions of' the said two detector arms.

A tracker-bar; a take-up spool belowT the tracker bar; engaging spindles above the tracker-bar; two detector arms extended vertically outside of and adjacent to the two ends of the said take-up spool, and having web contacting parts above the level of the said spool and the said detector arms also extended below the level of the said take-up spool; a pivotal bearing to each said arm lower than the said take-up spool; angle extensions from the lower part of each said arm toward the other and beneath the said take-up spool; and web-shifting controlling elements beneath said take-up spool and adapted to co-aot with the said extensions of the said two detector arms.
22. A take-up spool; two vertical detector arms at each end of the said take-up spool and having web-contacting parts above said take-up spool and web-shifter controlling elements connected to said detector arms and positioned below the said take-up spool.
23. A take-up spool; engaging spindles above the said spool; two detector arms extended vertically outside of and adjacent to the two ends of the said take-up spool; a
pivotal bearing to each said arm lower than the said takeup spool; angle extensions from the lower part of each said arm toward the other and beneath the said take-up spool; and web-shifting controlling elements beneath said take-up spool and adapted to co-act with the said extensions of the said two detector arms.
24. A take-up spool; engaging spindles above the said spool; two detector arms extended vertically outside O and adjacent to the two ends of the said take-up spool, and having web contacting parts above the level oi the said spool and the said detector arms also extended below the level of the said take-up spool; a pivotal bearing to each said arm lower than the said take-up spool; angle extensions from the lower part of each said arm toward the other and beneath the said take-up spool; and web-shifting controlling elements beneath the said take-up spool and adapted to co-act with the said extensions of the said two detector arms.
25. A tracker bar; engaging spindles labovethe said tracker bar; two detector arms; detector means on said arms above said tracker bar; a pivotal bearing to each said arm lower than the said tracker bar; angle extensions from the lower part of each said arm toward the other and beneath the said tracker bar; and web-shifting controlling elements beneath said tracker bar and adapted to co-act with the said extensions of the two detector arms.
26. A tracker bar; engaging spindles above the said tracker bar; two detector armsv having web contacting parts above the said tracker bar; a pivotal bearing to each said arm lower than the said tracker bar; angle extensions from the lower part of each said arm toward the other and beneath the said tracker bar; and web-shifting controlling elements beneath said tracker bar and adapted to co-act with the said extensions of the two detector arms.
