Description
GEORGE S. DUNBAR. Improvement in Apparatus for Increasing Pressure in Gas-Pipes.
` N0.126,451, Patented May7,1872.
I e 3P* f V@ i 1; figg-gm witueam:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. DUNBAR, OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR TEMPORARILY INCREASING THE PRESSURE IN GAS-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,451, dated May 7, 1872.
Specification describing a new and Im proved Gas-Compresser, invented by GEORGE S. DUN- BAR, of Pittsiield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts.
Figure 1 is a detail vertical section of my improved device taken through the yline :v x, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a detail horizontal section of the same taken through the line y y, looking upward.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for attachment to the pipe leading from the gas-holder to the street main, or from the street main to the building, to enable the pressure to be temporarily increased for the purpose of lighting and extinguishing street-lamps or other burners, and which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, and eifective in operation; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts ofthe device, as hereinafter` more fully described.
A represents the pipe leading from the gasholder to the street-main. B is the drip-box or trap, to receive liquids or moisture carried with the gas when it rst leaves the holder, and into which the parts of the pipe A open. The end of the part of the pipe A that leads to the gas-holder is provided with a valve, C, which may be a clap-valve, as shown in the drawing 5 or any other suitable kind of a valve, as may be desired. The valve O opens into the dripbox B. With the top of the drip-box B is connected an open pipe, D, which passes up in the central part of the cup or receiver E, in which is placed water or other liquid to serve as a seal to the open bottom of the holder F. With this construction, when the holder F is raised it will be filled with gas at the same pressure as it has in the main holder and in the pipes. Vhen the holder F is forced down, the gas in the holder F will be forced out, closing the valves O, and temporarily increasing the pressure in the pipes, so as to operate a device for lighting and extinguishing street-lamps or other burners.
The amount of increased pressure will depend upon the size of the holder F, and upon its weight or the power with which it is forced down.
The particular construction of the compressor is immaterial; a solid piston Working in a close cylinder, or any other construction will answer.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of a compressor, D E F, or equivalent, and a valve, C, with a gas-pipe, after it leaves the main gas-holder, substantially as hi rein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth, Whether used in connection with a drip-box or not.
GEO. S. DUNBAR.
