Description

WATER HEATER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 1. I917.
Patentd Apr. 30, 1918 ATYOHNEY ant A. nunn, or woonwonrn, nonrrr DAKOTA.
WATER-HEATER.
Application filed June 1, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARD A. Rune,
it more particularly relates to water heat-v ers for domestic purposes.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide an improved means for utilizing the products of combustion of an internal combustion engine for heating water by maintaining a circulation of water through the hot 'products of combustion.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which is'ex- 'ceedingly simple of construction, and therefore comparatively inexpensive; and
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be quickly and easily freed from soot deposited by the products of combustion.
Other objects and advantages may become apparent to those who read the following de scription and claims in connection with the appended drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a view partly inside elevation and partly in vertical section, illustrating the manner in which my invention is applied.
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is an enlar 'ed fragmental horizon tal sectional view, illustrating the manner in which the removable head of the exhaust chamber or muflier is secured in place.
'Referring to these drawings in detail, in which similar reference characters corre spond to similar parts throughout the sev* eral views, the element 10 represents a hot water tank of any ordinary construction, the details of which do not constitute a part of this invention. The tank 10 is provided with an openin adjacent to each end, and with pipe sections 11 and 12 which communicate with the respective openings and with a helical coil 13. This coil is inclosed within a cylinder 14 which is provided with heads or end walls 15 and 16 and with an opening 17 adjacent to the head 16 and spaced therefrom. The head 15 is provided with an inlet opening which communicates with the exhaust port of an engine, through the medinm of pipe sections or connections 18 and.

19; the engine being merely indicated'by the reference character 20.
The head 15 is also provided with an aperture through which extends a pipe section 21 which constitutes the connection between the pipe section 12 and the oil 13, said pipe section 21 being axially parallel with the coil 13. The head 16 is provided with an outlet opening 22 which ommunicates with an exhaustpipe 23 through the medium of a hollow extension 24, said hollow extension being located at one edge of said head 16.
The head 16 is provided with an annular flange 25 which fits snugly in the contiguous end of the cylinder 14., while a shoulder 26 abuts against the end of the cylinder and prevents inward movement of the head 16 beyond a predetermined limit. The head 16 is also provided with an annular flange 26', the latter serving to make the head exceedingly rigid and strong. A central opening 27 is provided in the head 16, and through this opening extends a hook-bolt 28, which carries a nut 29 which is seated snugly against the outer surface of the head 16, while the hook 30 embraces the pipe section, within the cylinder 14, at a point adjacent to the ex tension of the coil which passes through the aperture 17. In order for the book 30 to thus embrace the pipe section, the latter is bent inward to a point approximate to the axis of the coil, and the said extension is disposed substantially along a radial line of said coil. Because of the pipe 13 being of considerable rigidity and because of its engagement with the cylinder 14 where it passes through the aperture 17, the coil and its extension offer a considerable amount of resistance, while being somewhat yieldable and springy. Therefore, when the head 16 is in place, as shown in Fig. 3, and the hookbolt 27 is engaged therewith, as shown, the hook cooperates with the coil for holding the head 16 yieldingly in position, independently of any other means.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the head 16 may be very quickly and easily removed, when desirable or necessary, for. cleaning or repairing the interior and contents of the cylinder 14. It will also be seen that the hook 30 cooperates with the coil for preventing rotation of the hook-bolt when the nut 29 is being screwed on or OK. It may be found desirable at times to flush the cylinder 14, so as to wash out the soot, etc., and it is not considered beyond scope of this invention to provide a hose connection and an outlet opemng, with appropriate means for openmg and closing the latter, so that the necessary or desirable flushing may be ing greater at the bottom of the tank than at the top, the cold water also being heavier than the hot water, the water begins to gravitate through the pipe 11 and to ascend through the pipe 12. In other words, a circulation is established through the tank 10, pipe sections 11 and 12 and coils 13. It will be seen that the current of water through the coils 13 is moving in a direction opposite the direction in which the heated products of combustion pass through the cylinder 14-, so that the heated products of combustion first come into contact with the coils which are hottest, so as to superheat the water in the. coil immediately before it passes out through the pipe section 21 and up through the pipe section 12; while the relatively cold water descending through pipe section 11 absorbs substantially all of the heat which remains in the products of combustion after said products have passed around and through the coils nearest the head 15.
By the foregoing arrangement, I utilize a very large percentage of the heat contained in the products of combustion and apply the heat for the extremely useful purpose of heating water for any of the various purposes in which hot water is desirable. However, in thepresent embodiment of my invention I have been using an improved deviceuof this kind in connection with a domestic electric lighting system which is installed in connection with my dwelling, and the engine, corresponding to the elements 20, is provided with a self-starter which may be operated from any convenient point adjacent to or remote from the engine and I find it very convenient to have a selfstarter adjacent to one or more of the sources of supply from. the tank 10, so that when hot water is needed, I may start the en ine and have only a short while to wait until the water is heated -for the purpose desired. From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a device which is extremely useful and which it is believed will become very popular and will meet with great commercial success.
Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A water heater, comprising a cylinder havin a lateral opening in one end, heads closing the ends of the cylinder and having inlet and outlet openings, respectively, the head contiguous to the end of the cylinder having the lateral opening being remo able. and having a central opening, a coil of pipe within the cylinder and having an end portion extending diametrically inward, thence outwardly and passing through the lateral opening of the cylinder, and fastening means eXtending into the central opening of the removable head and engaging the diametrically inwardly extending portion of the coil to secure the reino able head to the cylinder.
2. The COITiblllfltlOll of a cylinder, a coil of pipe therein, a cylinder head having an opening therethrough, a hook-bolt seated in said opening and having its hook end in engagement with said coil, and a nut on said hook-bolt and cooperative therewith and w'th said coil oil pipe for securing said head yieldingly in position in said cylinder.
3. A heater comprising a cylinder having an inlet opening at one end and having a removable head at its other end, said removable head being provided with an outlet opening and with an opening which comprises a seat for a fastening element, a fastening element in said seat and provided with a hook, a coil of pipe in said cylinder and having one end extended through an end wall of said cylinder and adapted to communicate with a water tank, the other end of said coil extending through the other end portion of said cylinder and adapted to communicate with said securing element for removably securing said head in engagement with said cylinder.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
