The present invention relates to ophthalmic mountings and more particularly to the type having finger piece guard levers mounted to turn about upright axes on the support of the mounting, an object of this invention being to provide a construction in which the guard levers carry keepers for cooperating wi h the supportin Order to detachtion, the keepers being in one piece With the ably. secure the guard levers to the support.
To this and otherends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter de-' scribed, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the lenses which are connected by a'support-comprising, in this instance, a bridging portion 2, lensattaching devices 3, and horizontal connecting portions 4. Operating preferably on the upper face of the connecting portions tare the pivot} post beof the embodiment guard levers 5 which have forwardly eX- tending finger pieces 6 and rearwardly extending portions carrying nose bearing members 7. Preferably, the guard levers are pivotally connected to the support by pivot pins 8, which may be anchored in any suitable manner to the support, as at 9, to project upwardly from the support for engagement by hearing sleeves 10 on the upper faces of the guard levers. Coil springs 11 surround the bearing portions 10, and each has one of its'ends secured at 12 to the 13 on the support;
In the embodiment shownin Figs. 1 to 3, i H each of the guard levers has an integral.
tongue formed thereon, this tongue being bent downwardly at 14- in frontof the support for thelenses, and thence rearwardly at 15 toengage with the under side of the support, or that side of the support opposite the side on which the guard lever is mounted. This tongue being made of thin stock is pliable and, while readily holding the guard lever to thesupport, may be bent so as to clear'the under side of the support in order to permit the guard lever to be removed.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the parts are substantially identical with those shown in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, except that the lever retaining means is different. In Figs. 4 and 5, the guard lever 5 has a-screw 14 passed through the finger piece portions 6 of the guard lever to engage in an undercut portion 15 in the sup port for thelenses, the top of the undercut portion being engagedby the free end of the screw 14 in order to prevent the removal of the guard lever from the mount other end bearing at lever pivoted at 16 to the guard lever in rear or the pivot ofthelatteryandzon the underside of such lever, one. end 17 of the latch 14: being extended-into a recess 18 in the rear face oflthe support for the lenses so as to retain the hard lever on the support; The recess'iS is of such a length as to permit the latch to swing with the guard lever while the upper wall'of'th'e recess is engaged by the latch t'oyprevent'the withdrawal oi the guard lever. The latch H" also has an arm 19 whichis extended upwardly at one side ot. the guard lever and is provided with a bend 20 in which the end 12 of the spring 11 is engaged. This spring tends to hold the end 17 ot the'latch in the recess 18, the portion 19 of the latch limiting the movement of such latch under the action of the spring by engaging the side of the guard lever.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10, the pivot post 8 is extended above the bearing portion 10 of the guard lever, and is provided with a surrounding groove 21. Thelatc'h 14 is preferably in the form of a substantially inverted ti-shaped member, one arm of which ispivoted at 16 to the upper face of the guard lever in front of the pivot, while the other arm has-a hook 19 for. engagement with the side 'ofthe guard lever, when the recess of the notched central portion 22 of the latch or keeper is engaged within the recess 21 oi the pivot post. The spring 11 has its end 12 engaged with'the latch or keeper 1%, and tends to hold the reessed'portion 22- of the latch c withinthe recess 2'1 of the pivot or post, the
hooked portion 19 cooperating with the guard lever'to prevent undue movement of the free end of the latch, and at the same time preventing the tension of the spring throwing the: latch into binding engagement with the pivot post.
In the embodiment of the invention shown inFigs. 11', 12 and 13, the pivot post 8" has a V surrounding recess between the guard bearing portion and the support for the lenses. The guard lever supports the keeper or latch which, in this instance, is mounted to slide on the guard lever, being in the form of a plate 14? having lugs 23 atone end thereofbendingf upwardly and over the plate and engaging the guard lever in front of the pivot. The plate is notched at 9A in order to fit within and conform to the groove of the pivot post 8". Beyond the notched plate is an arm 25 which is formed with a hooked extension 26 to lie in rear of the pivot of the guard lever. The spring 11 has its end 12 engaged with the hook 2G in such manner that the spring tends to hold the latch within the undercut portion of the post, and thus retain the guard lever in position on the mounting.
In all embodiments of the invention, the keeper forthe guard lever is mounted directly upon the guard lever and is adjustable to engage the support for the lenses in a manner to retain the guard lever on the support. By mounting the keeper on the guard lever, the assembling of the parts of the mounting is facilitated, and at the same time, should the guard lever or the keeper become broken or get out of order, it is unnecessary to throw the whole mounting away, but the mounting may be repaired by a new guard lever. I hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An ophthalmic mounting comprising a support for the lenses, a nose guard pivotally and (letachably mounted on the su 'u ort, a latch for securing the guard to the support, said latch being movably mounted on the guard lever, and a spring for the guard holding the latch in latching position.
2. An ophthalmic mounting comprising a support for the lenses, a nose guard pivotally and d ctachably mounted on the support, a latch for securing the guard to the support, pivotally mounted on the guard lever to one side of the axis of the lever and having a portion cooperating with the support to hold the guard lever to the support and also having a portion to one side of its pivot to abut the guard lever when the latch is holding the guard lever on the support, and a spring for the guard lever acting on the latch to hold the latter in abutment with the guard lever.
3. An ophthalmic moiuitiug comprising a support for the lenses, a nose guard pivotally and detacli'ably m'o'i'm'ted on the support, and a latch for securing the guard to the support mounted on the guard lever and movable into and out of connection with the support to secure and release the guard lever.
