SURF-TOBOGGAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 16, 1,918.`
l Application led .Tune 20, 1917.- Serial No. 175,783. u
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. SILVER- NAIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surf- Toboggans, 'of which the following lis a specification.
This invention relates to surf vtoboggans of the type that are inflated with air for usefby bathers and others disporting in the sur The casing rof the toboggan is made of canvas or other suitable fabric, and it is an object of the invention 'so to form the casing for reception of inflating tubes or the like that it will be devoid of interior partitions. A casing so formed may be turned inside out after use, so that the inside may be dried thoroughly, and also in order that ripped seams may be repaired easily. In repairing the interior stitching of a toboggan having interior sewed in partitions` it is necessary to rip the outer casing to have access to the interior for the purpose of repair, as it cannot beturned inside out. but this necessity is avoided in thel casing formed in accordance with this invention. p
The invention also contemplates a novel disposition of the lacing and flaps of the casing, and of the coverings of the inflatingmembers placed in the casing.
lVhen read in connection with the description herein, the details of construction and arrangement of parts contemplated by the invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein an embodiment of the invention is disclosed, for purposes of illustration.
While the disclosures herein now are considered toexemplify a preferable embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that it is not the intention to be limited necessarily thereto in intepretation of the claims, as alterations and adaptations within the limits of the claims can be made without departing from the nature and spirit of the invention.
Like referencecharacters refer to corresponding parts in the views of the drawing, of whichp Figure 1 is an end view with the laced closed;
Fig. 2 is an end view with the outer ap open.
flaps Fig. 4 is a top view, the outer casing being partially broken away;
Fig. 5 is a' side view;
Fig. 6 is a view of the cover of oneof the inflating-casings; and
Fig. 7 is a view of one of the inflating -casings f 7 [Having more particular reference to the drawings, 8 designates an air-tight iniiating casing or tube, which vis provided at one end with a screw-threaded'inflating and deiating nipple and valve 9 of usual form. The inflating-casing is ldisposed within a cover 10 of canvas or other suitable fabric, and it has at one end flaps 11 and 12 formed with eyelets-13 through which lacing'14 is passed to hold the flaps in position to close the cover and retain the inflating casing therein. The cover also has a gromet 15 providing an opening in the wallat the same end as the flaps to accommodate the nipple 9 and to permit it to project outside of the cover where it isjaccessible for the purpose ofinlating" and deflating thel in the lateral margins of the strip have" stitched to them fabric strips 17 forming the side walls of the cover.
A suiiicient number of these iniiating casings and covers to till it when inflated are placed wit-hin an outer casing 18. The outer casing is formed of side fabric Walls 19 stitched to the lateral margins of a length of fabric material 20, which extends as the top of the casing from the rear end to and around the front end, and then as the bottom back to the rear end, and upwardly as the rear wall. The rear ends of the length of material 20 are not stitched together, but they are left free to provide an opening 21 for reception and removal of the linating casings and covers, so that the end wall at' is provided with eyelets 25, ywhich register' with the eyelets 23. The outer flap `is laced closed by the lacing `24, which 'is passed through both the eyelets 28 and 25.
The outer casing is curved upwardly at its front ,oibow end to facilitate itsvtaking and riding over the surf when in use underneath Va bather, and the inlating-casing covers are correspondingly shaped, so thatvvhen the in- .iiating-casings are :disteiided the outer casing will befilled and distended to the shape intended.
" fWhen the outer casing is to bevlled,ra
suicient number of cover-contained inflating-casings are i placed thereinI through .the 'opening 21 andthe nipplespassed through the gifoinets 23a. i The inlating-casings then fare inflated by meansV of al suitable air-pump j andthe outer'casing thereby distended 'to shape, and then the outer casing flaps are 'laced together, andthe article is ready for use.
Y VIn the eventthat it is necessary to repair one of the iiiflating casings or its cover, it is not necessary to withdraw all of them and render the article unavailable for use. Only the one tobe repaired is defiated and withdrawn, andy an Vextra inflating-casing and vcover is substituted. Thus it is not necessary tol put thel toboggan out of commission while repairs `are under way.
'Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let` ters Patent, is-
1. An article .of the kind Vdescribed comprising an outer casing having an opening, an inner flap arranged to close said opening and having therein openingsfor accommo- ;prisingan outer casing inclosing asingle chamber and having a single opening-leading to said chamberq aninner flap arranged to close said opening and having openings thereinlpor accommodation of inflation nip-- ples, a plurality of covers in said Aouter casing each containingan iniiating-casing .hav-
ing 'al nipple extending throughthe cover and through said flap, and an. outer viiap `on said. outer casing arranged torcoversaidnipples, there being registering eyelets inthe outer casing, inner flap andouter-apwhereby both of said flaps may beclosed bythe saine lacing.
- In witness whereof, IV aiiix my signature.
