Specification of Letters .ratent.
Application filed April 4, 1914. Serial No. 829,639.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lass G. GUSTAFSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ethel, in the county of Lewis and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wood-Sawing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in wood sawing machines, and the primary object thereof is to provide a generally improved machine of this class where by the operations to be performed may be accomplished rapidly and with facility and safety, and the machine can be constructed inexpensively and will be durable, the machine in its preferred form embodying a swinging saw for sawing blocks or pieces of any desired length, simple and efficient means for feeding or advancing the logs or pieces to be sawed, and means for firmly clamping and holding the log or piece while being sawed.
' To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements, and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a woo sawing machine constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the machine as viewed from the right in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the machine as viewed from the left in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 represents a horizontal section of the machine with parts omitted;
Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of a portion of the machine;
Fig. '6 is a detail sectional view showing the bearings for the swinging saw-carrying frame and the driving pulleys for the saw;

Similar arts are designated by the same reference c aracters in the several views.
.The preferred embodiment of the invention is'shown in the accompanyin drawings and will be hereinafter describe in detail. It is to be understood, however, that the invention is not restricted to the precise construction shown and that equivalent constructions within the scope of the claims at the end of the specification may be used.
Patented Apr. 16, 1918.
legs 2 are mounted on the runners and these legs are connected at their upper ends in pairs by top rails 3. A suitable number of cross-bars 4; connect the pairs of legs and serve to bind and secure the same together 1n proper relation. A pair of cross-beams 5 are also secured to the legs .2, and these cross-beams project from one side of the frame and are connected by a pair of supporting beams 6. A pair of posts 7 rest on the runners or skids 1 and support a cross-beam 8, and a pair of bearin supports 9 rest on the member 8. A pair 0 beams 10 extend longitudinally through the lower portion of the frame and serve to support a suitable number of spiked rollers 11, 12, 13,
14 and 15, these spiked rollers serving to support and guide the logs or pieces as the same are brought into position to be operpted on by the saw and held in such posiion. are idle rollers which may revolve when the piece of wood resting thereon is advanced.
- Certain of these rollers, the rollers 12 and 15 in the present instance, are according to the present invention provided with means for rotating them and thereby feeding the log or piece mechanically. For this purpose, a belt or chain 16 connects pulleysor wheels 17 and 18 fixed to the shafts of the rollers 12 and 15 respectively, the opposite end of the shaft of the roller 15 having a bevel gear 19 thereon which cooperates with a larger bevel gear 20. The bevel gear 2.0
is fixed to an actuating shaft 21 and is pro-.
vided with means for rotating it and thereby turning the spiked rollers 12 and 15 to advance the log. In the construction shown,
an operating lever 22 is provided which is mounted loosely on the shaft 21 and carries a pawl 23 which is arranged to cooperate with a ratchet wheel 24, the latter being fixed on the shaft 21. By rocking the lever 22 rearwardly the pawl 23 acts on the ratchet wheel 24 to turn the shaft 21 and thereby rotate the spiked rollers 12 and 15, the lever 22 returning to its initial position I without rotation of the shaft 21. The shaft 21 in the construction shown is mounted on one of the beams 10 by a pair of bearings 25.
As shown, the rollers 11, 13 and 14 Where the pieces to be sawed are comparatively short, supplemental beams 26 may be joined as continuations of the beams 10 and one. or more spiked rollers 27 may be mounted in these supplemental beams to support the projecting end of the piece while the op posite end thereof is being operated on by the saw. Where, however, relatively long pieces or logs are to be sawed, a carriage is preferably provided, the carriage shown in the present instance embodying a frame 28 mounted to travel on wheels 29, the latter running on a suitable track 30, and the carriage supports a pair of spiked rollers 31 upon which the projecting end of the log is adapted to rest. These spiked rollers are mounted to revolve in bearings 32 which bearings are mounted on supports 33. The shafts of the rollers are provided with ratchet wheels 34: and pawls 35 cooperate with the ratchets whereby as the log resting on the carriage is fed into the sawing machine the carriage will travel therewith and when the carriage has reached practically the limit of its movement toward the sawing machine the pawls 35 can be disengaged from the ratchets 34:, thereby allowing the log to be fed farther toward the saw while the carriage remainsstationary.
36 represents the saw which, according to the present invention, swings transversely of the log or piece to be cut. in the construction shown, this saw is mounted on an arbor 37 and the arbor is journaled in bearings 38 which are fixed to the lower end of a swinging saw-carrying frame which latter embodies a pair of side arms 39 and connecting cross-members 10. A pair of braces 41 are shown to assist in securing the bearings 38 for the saw arbor to the swinging saw frame. The saw arbor has a driving pulley 42 fixed thereon and a driving belt 43 cooperates with said pulley. The belt 43 is driven from a belt wheel 44:, the latter being fixed on a main driving shaft 45. This main driving shaft is journaled in bearings 46 mounted on the top beams 3, and a pair of loose and tight belt pulleys 47 and 48 are provided whereby power may be transmitted to the machine to drive the saw. The swinging saw frame is suspended to swing about the axis of the driving pulley 44 as a center, but according to the present invention this swinging frame is not suspended from the shaft 45 but is provided with independent bearings whereby friction which would be otherwise produced is avoided. ltn the construction shown, the swinging saw frame has bearings 49 at its upper ends which cooperate with sleeves 50 which are fitted loosely over the shaft 45. These sleeves are su ported at their outer ends by hearing brackets 51 and at their inner ends by bearing brackets 52, the latter being mounted on the upper ends of a pair of branched supports a'aeaeae gears 57 to an actuating shaft 58, the latter being provided with a handle 59 whereby the shaft 58 may be rotated and such-rotation transmitted through the gears 57 to the shaft 56, the latter operating to swing the crank arm 55 and thereby swingthe saw transversely and perform the sawing operation.
The shafts 56 and 58 are preferably mounted in bearings 60 which rest on hearing sup-- ports 9. Means ispreferably provided for automatically returning the saw after each cut has been-made in order that the saw will clearthe log or piece and thereby permit the same to be fed forward or advanced preparatory to the next sawing operation. Tn the construction shown, a cable 61 is attached by the piece 62 to the swinging saw frame, it passing around a guiding pulley 63 secured by a bracket 64 to the cross-member 8, thence over a pulley 65 which latter is supported by an upwardly inclined arm 66. The end of the cable is provided with a Weight 67 Which exerts sufficient force to return the saw to initial position after each sawing operationhas been performed.
The present invention also provides means for gaging or measuring the length of each piece to be cut. Tn'the present instance, such means comprises an arm 68 which is fixed to a shaft 69, the latter being supported in bearings 70 resting on the bearing supports 6, and the lower end of the arm 68 carries a gage block 71. This gage block is preferably adjustable relatively to the arm 68 in order that it may be set to measure pieces of difierent lengths. For this purpose, the lower end of the arm 68 is provided with a horizontal portion 72 which is adjustable relatively to a similar horizontal portion 73 on the gage block 71, and a bolt 74: serves to secure these parts at different desired adjustments. This gage or measuring device is preferably provided with means for automatically swinging it clear of the piece sawed ed in order that the same may drop without obstruction, To this end an arm 75 is attached to the shaft 69 and is provided at its upper end with a bracket havin a pair of hooks 76 and 77 thereon. A cable 8 is secured to the hook 7 6 and passes around guiding pulleys 79 and 80 both secured to the legs of the frame, the opposite end of the cable 78 being attached to the swinging saw fre by a bracket 81L.
A cable 82 is connected to the other hook 77 and passes around guiding pulleys 83 and 84, it being attached at its opposite end to thebracket 81. With this construction, when.
saw frame is swung to its normal inoperative position, the gage block 71 Wlll be in The present invention also provides means i for effectively clamping or holding the log during the sawing operation in order to preventdisplacement of the log due to pinching of the saw or other causes. In the construction shown, a toothed arm 85 is provided which is movable vertically so as to clamp and release a log or piece resting upon the spiked supporting and feed rollers. This arm is fixed to a shaft 86 mounted to rock 1n bearings 87 and 88, and an operating lever 89 is fixed to the shaft and provided with a handle extension 90 which is adapted to be raised or lowered to releaseor clamp the log. A tooth or projection 91 is provided on the handle portion of this lever and is arranged to coiiperate with a toothed rack 92 fixed on the ad acent-leg 2 whereby the clamp may be locked in position to secure the log and may be unlocked and raised when desired.
' I claim as my invention a 1. In a log sawing machine embodying a runway for the logs to be sawed, a frame carrymg a saw movable transversely of said runway and a pivoted gaging device, means for swinging the gaging device into and out of 'alinement with the runway when the saw reverse directions across the runway.
2. In a log sawing machine embodying a. runway for the logs to be sawed, a swinging frame-carrying a saw movable transversely of the runway and a pivoted gaging device for measuring the length of the piece to be sawed, means for swinging the gaging device across the runway in reverse directions to the movement of the saw across across the runway comprising an actuating lever fixed to the gaging device, an endless cable attached at difl'erent points thereof to the saw frame and the actuating lever, and pairs of pulleys over which said cable is movable, said pulleys being disposed to. double the cable upon itself whereby the part of the cable attached to the actuating lever for the gaging device will move in a reverse direction to the movement of that portion of-the cable attached to the saw frame during swinging movements of the saw frame.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LABS GUSTAV GUS'IAFSON.
