DRIVING- MECHANISM.
Lasarte;
Specification of Letters Patent.l
llmateiited Apr., iti, i915.
Application iled June 12, 1917. Serial No. 174,243.
'To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PASQUALE GIMBERTI, a
y citizen of the United States, and resident f2 oA of N ew York city, borough of the Bronx, in the county of the Bronx and State of New York, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a driving mechanism, comprising a rockable or reciprocative lever and a driven meinber, whereby said member may be rotated continuousl in one direction by means of the to and iro movements of said levers, and whereby by a simple adjustment oi' the parts said member may be driven in the reverse direction by similar to and fro movements of said lever.
My invention is adapted to be utilized for operating the drive wheel or wheels of a childs wagon or vehicle for propelling the latter, and is also adapted to be utilized in a boat for operating a propeller oi' the latl ter, and in other relations. 25
My invention comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure l is a plan view illustrating my iinprovements embodied in a childs wagon; Fig. 2 is a detail view of part of my improved driving mechanism; FigfQP isa detail view voi" part of Fig. 2; Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged views of the operating lever and driving gears of Fig. 6; Fig. 5 is a view illustrating a boat equipped with my improvements; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged plan view illustrating my improvements adapted for propelling the boat.
Similar' numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The letters A, B indicate driving gears that are spaced apart and mounted to rotate upon a shaft or rod P supported in bearings upon a frame W or in a boat X. A lever indicated generally at D is journaled at itsinner end to rock'on'shaft P and is shown comprising two spaced side members d shown having a block e secured therebetween at the outer end uniting the members Z securely together. Lever D is shown between gears' A,
B. The gear wheels A, B are provided with ratchet teeth E, E which face and operate in opposite directions. The lever D is pro-- vided with pawls O, O respectively adapted to engage ratchetsv E, E', whereby when lever D is moved in one direction wheel A will be rotated in the samev direction, and when said B will be rotated in such direction. A driven member Gr, show n in the form of a shaft, is provided with a pinion F inter osed between and meshing with the gears B, whereby when lever D is rocked to and fro said .pinion and member `will be rotated `in a given direction by said pawls and driving gears, the pawls slipping freely over the corresponding ratchets when moved reversely. ln order to rotate member G in a direction reverse to-its directionof rotation 'from the pawls 0, 0', I provide teeth y8, 8 j carried by the heels A, B respectively, and
which face in the direction reverse `to the associate ratchet teeth E, E, and pawls 7, 7 are adapted to coperate with ratchet teeth 8, 8 respectively. Said pawls are movably carried by lever D. and are shown slidably" supported in holes d in members d of lever D, springs 6, 6 being shown secured to said members al and pawls 7, 7 normally tending to withdrawsaid pawls from thecorresponding ratchet teeth 8, 8. A rod i is slidably carried by lever D, being shown slidable iinl holes in cross bars cl2, secured between the members d. Rod i is shown provided with pawl operating members 5, 5 which are adapted to pass between the springs 6, 6 to engage the latter to push them with Ithe pawls 7, 7', whereby said pawls will'A be moved into engagement with the correspondingteeth 8, 8. Levers l, 2, are pivotally connected with rod i at 3, and said levers cooperate with members ,d of lever D, being shown operative in openings a in said memi bers (Fig. 2), although said levers may be when ieveis Li, 2, me in pesiiene shew?. l l mici 2 fie pe-Wis U, U Willi eep" :vidi the ieoeiie'i E, E for causing," vo i of driving und 'fie' Genau mii.; tien, @i 5^' i diiveil meub ie'ver D is l oper i l, the iai be move@ a 9 W ,vii/hereby when leve?
