JOHN TREFFEISON, OF PITTSTON, PENNSYLVANIA,
IMPROVEMENT IN vPEDDLERS WAGCNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,126, dated April 23, 1872.
To all lwhom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TREFrEIsoN, of Pittston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Butchers or Peddlers Wagons; and I do hereby decla-re that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which makes a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a View in perspective of a wagon-body embracing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the same.-
My invention consists in depending from th side rails of a wagon an intermediate box, which is formed by the downward extension of the body of the wagon, and which extends transversely across the wagon, equidistant from its two axles, so as not to interfere with the action of the runninggear, which box shall have such depth as will admit the vender of the meat or wares to stand upright, always under cover of the wagon, while it may also be used as a receptacle for such wares or meat in transportation, as will be further described. Y
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the front, and B the rear part of the side rails of an ordinary wagon, provided with the usual covered top C. The said rails A B are not continuous throughout th e length ofthe wagon, but are separated in the middle, equidistant between the two axles, in the manner shown in the drawing. At the inner terminal points A of the said side rails A B, on either side, are depended vertical (or nearly so) rails D l), which serve as the supporting timbers for the box E, constructed theron, which box is, as it were, a downward extension of the body of the wagon to such a distance as will permit the vender of the goods to stand upright therein and under cover of the top C, and to utilize the rear end of the wagon-body as his counter, also under cover.
It is contemplated as a feature of my invention, when' perishable articles, such as meat, Snc., are being transported, to use the box -E as a casing for an ice-box, on and around which the meat may be packed to prevent its spoiling 5 and it is further contemplated to use the. box E as a receptacle for other goods, which, when placed therein, are covered by a top, which shall render the ooring of the wagon continuous in a horizontal'line.
When the place is reached at which a sale is desired to be made the ice-box or goods, as it may be, are removed from the box E, displayed upon the rear part of the wagon, and
` the seller takes his position, protected, as are the articles to be sold, from the inclemency of the weather.
Having described my invention, I claim- The downward extension of the side rails and flooring of a wagon-body so as to constitute a box, E, between the two axles in which the vender of meat or other articles may stand upright under cover, the said box also serving as a receptacle for the goods when desired, in the manner described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
JOHN TREFFEISON. Witnesses:
JOHN RICHARD, L. B. ENSIGN.
