IMPROVEMENT IN MILL-PICKS.

SPECIFICATION.

I, CHARLES IVIGNEAL, of Silver Creek, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Mill-Picks, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists in the combination, with the handle of a mill-pick, of a jaw or clamp, provided with a socket and recess at its lower end to receive the point or steel, and a clamping-jaw, made tapering or wedge-shaped at both ends, so as to wedge both-in the mortise of the handle and in the socket in which the point is inserted as the pick is being used.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure I is a side elevation of my improved mill-pick. Fig. II is a sectional elevation of the same; and Fig. III is a detached viewof the tool-holder.

A represents the handle of the pick, the head of which is provided with an inclined mortise, a, into which the pick'holder is inserted. B is the steel point or pick proper, of ordinary construction. G and D represent the two clamping-jaws which form the pick-holder, theupper ends of both being made tapering, so that when placed together they will form a wedge fitting in the inclined mortise a of the handle. The lower end of the jaw G is constructed with a socket or recess, 0, of .a size adapted to receive the steel point or pick B, the upper end of which abuts against a shoulder, c, of the jaw C, as most clearly shown in Fig. II. The lower end of the clamp D is also made tapering, or beveled off on the outer side, so as to fit and wedge in the socket c, which is made of corresponding form forthe purpose. The

upper end of the pick or steel point B, extending above the socket or covered portion of the recess 0, and being made so as to project alittle above the face of the jaw G, the wedge or clamp D, when inserted in the socket, will press against the upper portion of the point, so that when the upper ends of the clamps O and D are brought together the wedge D will operate as alever as well as a wedge in clamping and holding the pick in place. The point being arranged in the holder 0, the wedge D is inserted in the socket thereof, and the upper ends of the two clampsintroduced into the mortise in the handle.

By striking on the point in the ordinary manner of using the pick the upper ends of the clamps O D are forced together and tightly wedged in the mortise of the handle, while at the same time the wedge-shaped lower end of the clamp D is driven or forced into the socket c, wedging and firmly clamping the point B in the recess 0. The continued use of the pick operates to more firmly clamp the point B and wedge the holder in the handle. The point is readily released, when required, by reversing the pick and striking a light blow with the upper end of the clamp G, which should be made so as to project a little above the end of clamp D, against any hard surface, which causes a disengagement of the parts in an obvious manner.

I claim as my invention- The combination, with the handle A, of the socketed clamp O a, and double wedge D, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
