Description

J. LOUGHRIDGE.
Improvement in Springs andY Oscillating; Axle for Childrens Carriages.
N0.126,066. PatentedAprmww..
JAMES LOUGHRLDGE, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRINGS AND OSCILLATING AXLES FR CHILDRENS CARRIAGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,066, dated April 23, 15872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES LOUGHRIDGE, of the city of Pittsburg, lin the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Springs and Oscillating Axle for Childrens Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a spiral spring and its holder with the axle of a childs carriage or perambulator, said holder serving the double Durpose ot' support for the spring and attachmentplate for connecting the axle with the body of the carriage, 'the said spring and holder being so constructed and arranged with relation to the axle and the body of the carriage as to relieve the latter from the unpleasant rebound or jolt caused by the wheel or wheels coming in contact with any obstacle, or when passing over uneven surfaces.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing which forms part of my specification, Figure l is a perspective view ofthe axle-spring and its holder, representing it attached to the pieces which support the body of the carriage. Fig. 2 is a section cut through at line y y of Fig. l.
A represents the axle; B, the holder, which is provided with the slot C, in which the bolt D moves. e e are arms of the holder, for connecting it with the pieces that support the body of the carriage. Around the holder B is placed a spiral spring, f, which is held in position with relation to the holder B at its upper end by the points g, and at its bottom by the piece h. By constructing the several parts as hereinbefore described, and as represented in the accompanying drawing, the body ofthe carriage is allowed to spring up and down in a vertical line with relation to the plane ofthe axle, andto oscillate sidewise 5 and the wheels, in passing over uneven ground, or coming in contact with obstacles, will cause the axle to oscillate without undue motion of the body oi the carriage. In case both wheels strike against an obstacle, the concussion will be imparted to the axle, which will throw it upward, causing vthe bolt D to move up in the slot G, carrying with it the piece h', which will compress the spring, and therebyrelieve the body of the carriage from any unpleasant rebound or jolt; and in case either one of the wheels comes in contact with anobstacle, or drops into a rut, the axle will oscillate, which will give an oscillating motion to the piece h, and will cause the rebound or jolt to be thrown upon one or the other side ofthe spiral `spring j', and thus prevent any unpleasant or disagreeable motion or joltin g of the body of the carriage.
Having thus described the nature, const-ruction, and operation of my improvement, what I claim as of my invention, and desire to sccure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe combination ofthe holder B, spiral sprin g f, piece 71., bolt D, with the axle A, all con structed, arranged, and operating with relation to each other, substantially as hereinbefore described, and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES LOUGHRIDGE.
