JOSEPH S. CRUM, OF SGOTTVHJLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEDGE-TRIMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,032, dated April 23, 1872.
Specification of Improved Hedge-Trimmer, invented by JOSEPH S. GRUM, of Scottville, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois.
The invention will first be fully described and then clearly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the whole machine ready for cutting top of hedge. Fig. 2 is a lonthrough line a; a; of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view of the cutters and their adjuncts placed in position for trimming sides of hedge.
A represents the carriage; A its longitudinal frame; A a top bar provided with pendent strap. A and A A A are uprights to hold the shafts of gear-wheels a a a and cocentric a To the inner sides of frame A are appended two slotted bars, B B, which form the bearings of large wheel I) and driving spurwheel b By this construction, as the cogs of spur-wheels a b wear the latter maybe moved up to the former to compensate for said wear. b b are brackets placed above and below frame A and provided with perforations which correspond with those in the bars B. This allows these bars B to swing in the arc of a circle and to adjust vertically the wheels 1) b and thus raise or lower the frame which carries the operative mechanism. 0 is the cutter-frame, in
which the knives c are pivoted. These knives have each a long shank, 0 which extends back through the reciprocating bar 0 This latter has a perforated shank, 0", in which is detachably fastened the actuating pitman c". The
-cutter-frame O is hinged to a frame, D, which admits of being adjusted to difi'erent heights on the standard cl. d is a horizontally-movable prop, which supports cutter-frame when trimming top of hedge. d is a brace to hold said frame in position. E is a lateral proj ection from the carriage A, which supports the frame D and rests upon an adjustable casterwheel 0. On the end of this projection E is placed an arm, 6 which is provided with setscrew 6 to hold the cutter-frame when turned down to cut the side of hedge. F is a connection between pitman c and an auxiliary pitman, 0 and is pivoted near the top of standard d. It is perforated at difierent points f to allow the cutters to trim the sides of hedge at differentangles. i
The cutter-frame O, as shown in Fig. 1 of drawing, uses only the pitman c, and is supported by vibrating prop al when it is designed to cut the hedge flatly on top, the frame D being elevated on standard d as much as may be necessary. When, however, it is desired to oblique the cutter-frame the prop d is swung from beneath it, the cutter-frame turned down against arm e or a set-screw, e projecting therefrom at any distance desired. The grav-- ity of the cutter-frame will prevent any tendency on its part to rise. The connection F and auxiliary pitman c 'are then applied between cutter-bar c and pitman 0*, being adjusted according to the angle of inclination desired for the row of cutters. If a greater elevation is needed than the standard will admit of, then the frame A is lifted, as before described.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The longitudinal frame A providedlwith brackets b N, and the bars B B on the inner sides thereof slotted longitudinally, and carrying the journals of wheels b b combined, as described, so as to allow the wheels b b to be moved forward or backward and up and down, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of hinged cutter-frame O with a frame, D, adjustable on standard d of carriage-extension E, as and for the purpose specified.
3. The'hinged cutter-frame O andIverticallyadjustable frame D of arm 0 and set-screw e, as and for the purpose described.
4. The detachable connection F and auxiliary pitman 0 combined with the reciprocating pitman c and cutter-bar 0 as and for the purpose specified.
