if Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar, 19, 191 8,
I Application filed-December 20, 1915. Serial No. 67,774.
7 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1', Aucusr W. MELAN- nnn, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and Stateof- California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Filters for Sanitary Faucet Drinking- Fourtains, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in faucet drinking fountains, and the objects of the invention are to provide means, in such a fountain, forfiltering the water rising therefromwhich can be easily removed for the purpose of cleaning or changing the same; also means for directing a stream of water so that it will impinge upon thefiltering means uniformly and without tendingto damage the same; also means for regulating saiddistributing means; also means for preventing the entrance of impurities into the drinking fountain.
In the accompanying drawing, the figure is a sectional view'of my improved sanitary faucet drinking fountain.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a faucet drinking fountain containing a con duit 2 leading to a downwardly directed spout 3 and a conduit 4t leading to an upwardly directed nozzle 5. Said nozzle is threaded on the outer side and screwed thereon is the lower portion 6 of the casing of a drinking fountain. A set screw 7 is employed to secure said lower portion upon said nozzle in the most desirable position dependent upon the pressure under which the water is forced through the nozzle, as will be hereinafter explained. Upon said lower portion is screwed, as shown at 8, the upper portion of the casing of said fountain, which is preferably hemispherical for convenience in drinking, and is formed at its upper central portion with a cylindrical vertical tubular inward extension 9. Said tubular extension is formed with a shoulder 10, against which is placed a circular piece 11 of fine wire mesh, held in position by a short tube 12, driven tightly into said tubular extension.
Said upper portion is formed withan inwardly extending annular flange 13, between which and the upper circular edge of the lower portion are interposed a circular disk 1d of filtering material, preferably a suitable fabric, and also, abovethe'disk 14;, a disk 15 of perforated sheet metal, said disks being held in position by screwing down the upper portion of the casing upon the lower. 1
Formed integral with, and extending across, the lower portion, is a spider or cross-shaped piece 16, the central part of which is immediately above the center of the slightly conical upper end of the nozzle. The object of this arrangement, is to prevent the water impinging only at the center of the filtering material, and therefore, since it emerges from the nozzle under great pressure, causing it to rapidly disintegrate. By its presence immediately over the outlet nozzle, said cross-piece forces the water through the openings 17 thereof, so that it is distributed with practical uniformity against the whole lower surface of the filtering material, and consequently the wear of the filtering material is very small. Notwithstanding that the pnessure at each point of the under side of the filtering material is greatly diminished as compared with pressure at, the nozzle, and therefore the pressure on the upper side thereof is also diminished, it results that, since the water emerges through a hole having an area much smaller than that of the filtering material and disk, the pressure of the fountain is considerable.
The casing of the drinking fountain can be raised or lowered upon the nozzle to increase or decrease the distance between the nozzle and the cross-piece as may be found best to distribute the water flowing through the openings in the cross-piece, and, when so raised, it may be secured in that position by the set screw.
Any object falling on the wire screen will immediately be driven out by the rush of water therethrough, when the fountain is turned on.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters- Patent is 1. A drinking fountain comprising, in
combination, a lower portion adj'ustably' secured about the nozzle of a water-feed pipe, said lower portion being externally screw threaded atits upper extremity and having a spider provided with a deflecting portion disposed above the nozzle, an upper portion having an integral centrally depending tube forming anoutlet and being screw threaded atits lower end for securance to the upper extremity of the lower portion, said upper portion having an inwardly extending annularflange disposed-in a plane removedfrom the lower-end of the tube, and a circular disk of filtering material interposed and secured between the'upper end of said lower portion and said flange.-
2. A drinking: fountain comprising, in
extremity of the lower portion, said upper Copies oflthis patent gy be obtainedfor-five cents ea0h;,by' addressing the: Commissioner of ratents,
portion having; aninwardly extending annular flange disposed in a plane removed from the lower end of the tube, a disk of filtering materialsup'port'ed upon" the upper endof said lower portion, and a perforated sheet metal disk disposed upon and covering" said filtering disk, said disks being locked in position by said, annular flange.
3. A drinklng fountain comprlsing, in
combination, a lower portion adjustably securedv about thenozzle of a water-feed pipe, an upper portion removably secured to the upper extremity ofsaid lowerportion and;
having a spider and an integral depending tube forming an outletin substantial alinement with said nozzle and spider, an inwardly extending annular flange projecting from saiduppergportion in; a plane below the lower end: of the tube, a disk of filtering witnesses. u 7
