CEMENT-POST MOLD.
Application filed July 16, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH W VVA'rsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Island, in the county of Hall and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cement- Post Molds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact. description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements 1n devices for molding cement posts and the like. the principal object being to provide a device of this character so constructed that a large number of posts may be molded in a device of minimum size, the mold being invertible so that a number of posts may be formed on each side thereof.
Another object is to provide a mold of the class specified which may be easily and mexpensively manufactured and marketed, yet one which will be easy to operate and will produce good results.
l Vith the foregoing general objects in View, the invention resides in the novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved mold in operative position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view with one side of the mold removed for filling the same;
Fig. 3 is atransverse section;
Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective View showing a slightly different form of construction.
In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates the body of the improved mold, said body being formed of a metal plate, of a plurality of metal plates, or of boards,as occasion may demand. It will be observed body 1 is corrugated in order that a plurality of longitudinal grooves 3 are formed in the opposite side thereof, the grooves at one side being positioned between those of the other side as shown. It is within the grooves or channels 3 that the posts are molded and if these posts are to be of uniform size throughout their lengths, the grooves will be so shaped, but if the posts Specification of Letters Patent.

are to be of greater width at their lower ends than at their upper ends, one end of the several grooves will necessarily be wider than the other end thereof, as illustrated at 3 in Fig. 5. If this construction is followed, the small ends of alternate grooves willbe positioned between the large ends of the intervening. grooves to facilitate manufacture.
A pair of horizontally elongated end members 4, constructed either of wood or metal or of any other preferred material, are permanently secured to the ends of the bony 1 so that the ends of the grooves or channels 3 are closed, thus forming a plurality of troughs in which the posts are molded. "he end members a project. beyond the side edges of the body 1 and are formed with openings 5 through which horizontal rods 6 are passed, said rods extending through longitudinal beads 7 which are formed along the ends of a pair of side members 8, said members being constructed of wood or metal as occasion may demand. Although the specific means described, are preferably employed for securing the side members 8 over the channels of the body 1, it will be obvious that other suitable features of construction could well be employed for this purpose. I do not therefore wish to be limited to such unessential details.
in operation, the improved mold is positioned horizontally and one of the rods 6 is removed so that the uppermost side member 8 may be swung u owardly around the other rod as a pivot. 'lhe uppermost channels 3 are now filled with the green cement, of which the posts are to be constructed, reinforcing wires being by preference located in or near the corners of said posts during the molding operation. After filling the channels, the upper side member 8 is again closed and locked in operative position by reinsertion of the rod 6 which was previously removed. The entire device is now inverted, the ends of the members 4 being preferably rounded to assist in this operation, and in its inverted position, the mold is by preference supported on a plurality of suitable sleepers which will prevent the cement resting on the side member 8 from possible springing or warping the same. These preliminaries havin been carried out, what was previously the bottom side member 8 is raised in the manner above described so that the now uppermost channels may be filled. This having been done, the side member last detached is again secured in placeuntil the cement has set. Nhen this hardening has taken place, however, the.
rods 6 of the lowermost side members are removed, whereupon the mold is inverted,
use. c
thus leaving aplurality of completed posts supported upon said sideinember. After inverting the mold in this manner, the other rods are removed so that the remaining side member'may be disconnected from the body of the mold, whereupon the latter is lifted and positioned at some out-of-the-way location, until the several completed posts have been removed from. the side members 8, to render the device in condition for further Any suitable provision may securmg the fence to the posts while molding the latter, but I prefer to provide. the
side members 8 with longitudinal slits 9 through which staples or the like may be inserted into the green cement, said staples By constructing and operating the im-V proved'mold as or substantially as above described, a large number of posts may be cast in the same device-with ease. Particular emphasis is laid upon the fact that the body 1 is corrugated so that the opposite sides thereofproduce'the same effects upon the posts being cast; It is also worthy of note; that the posts will be of triangular Copies. of this patent may be obtained for be made for shape. This'shape hasproven equally as eifectlve as others, and more advantageous in somerespects, since it permits the com-' pleted articlesto be removed from the molds more easily than round or square posts;
On account ofthe several advantageous features of the construction abovedescribed,
this construction constitutes the preferred embodnnentof my lnvention. I wish 1t understood, however, that numerous minor changes may wellbe'made withinathe scope of: the mventlon as claimed.
I olaune- LA. mold of'theclass descr bed COIHP T Sr ing a. body member having channels in its opposite sides, a pair of end members-applied-to the'ends of said body member and closing the ends of said channels, said end members extending beyond the edges ofsaid body member and'having openings,
at oneside of said body member and having guides in almement' withthe openings of said end members, and a fastening rod 111- sertible through said openings and guides I for detachably securing said side'member in place.
2'. A cement post mold comprisingv a body formed of a single sheet of metal corrtu a side member appllcable for closing the channels;
gated to provide its opposite sides with iplastic receiving channels, end plates secured to the ends of saidbody. and closing the ends of said channels, a pair of side plates for covering the channels at the-upper and lower sides of said body, and means for securing said side plates in place.
In testimony whereof I-have hereunto set my hand in the presence of tWo subscribing witnesses. 1 r t HUGH V. WVATSON.
