AUGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1918.
Application filed January 5, 1917. Serial No. 140,802.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MILTON SAN- DEBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsboro, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Augers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an auger bit and the primary object of the invention is to improve a boring implement of this character to such an extent as to render the bit capable of rapidly penetrating the material to be bored in a plane parallel with the grain and also to provide an auger bit in which the size and arrangement of the spirals is such that a slicing, or shaving edge on these spirals may be quickly sharpened by a person unfamiliar with this work when the occasion requires.
iVith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications, within the scope of the matter claimed may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an auger bit constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the auger bit.
Fig. i is a transverse section on the line of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow.
F ig. 5 is a longitudinal section through the end of the auger bit.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing. 3
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the letter A designates an auger bit of the double spiral type having a threaded conical center point 2, at the inner end of which a plurality of spirals 3 on the bit gradually increase in size toward the shank 4, until the largest of said spirals has attained a diameter greater than the spirals 5 on the remaining portion of the bit, said spirals 5 being of uniform diameter. The spirals 3 gradually decrease in thickness from the longitudinal center line of the bit until a knife edge 6 is attained at their periphery. The knife edge 6 when the bit is in use serves to shave away the material being bored and upon the smallest of the spirals 3 merges into the threads on the center point 2 as indicated in the drawing by the numeral 7.
By constructing the auger bit as above described it is obvious that when the bit is employed to bore longitudinally of the grain. the spirals 3 assist the center point in causing the bit to rapidly penetrate the material to be bored and also space the spirals 5 from the wall of the bore, so that the material shaved away by the knife edge on the spirals 3 may be conveyed from the bore by the spirals 5 without the chips or shavings clogging in the bore. The size and arrangement of the spirals 3 which produces the shaving edge upon the bit enables such edge to be quickly and easily sharpened by a person unfamiliar with this work when the occasion requires.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is at once apparent that an auger has been provided in which the bit is so constructed as to render the same highly eflicient for the purpose set forth.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
An anger of the spiral type having a threaded, conical initial penetrating point and having its spirals merging into the threads of the point and increasing gradually in diameter until a maximum has been reached, the diametrically opposite edges of the spirals at such maximum diameter being cut away to form shoulders, the spirals throughout the remainder of the length of the auger being of a diameter equal to the distance between the inner ends of said shoulders and being of uniform diameter, said first mentioned spirals being provided with knife edges.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES MILTON SANDERS.
