' State of vVVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to improvements in cartons or similar receptacles and particularly. to the knock-down type of boXes, such for instance as are much usedl in packing and transporting certain kinds of goods where light, inexpensive, yet reasonably strong closures are required and one which will protect the contents from breakage. p

It is an object of the present invention to provide a carton of the Character set forth which when folded will interlock itself without any additional fastening means such as stitches 'and staples.

A further object of the invention is to pro- 'vide a suitable cell forming filler which when placed within the carton will assist the latter to 'be retained in its folded position.

With the 'above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as theldescription continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings has been shown the simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but

alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come Within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof or sacrificing the efliciency of the same.

The carton forming the subject matter of the present invention is designed to afford an improved receptacle or closure of the folding type which is particularly adapted for the packing and transportation of goods which are best mounted or inclosed in a cellular structure.

The invention is particularly suited to the packing of eggs or other articles liable to w wherein like and corresponding parts are* designated throughout the several views by similar reference characters;

In Fig. 5 there is shown a blank cut from wood from the Pacific coast spruce which is odorless and tasteless although it can be made from other Woods. This piece of veneer is of a rectangular configuration being scored in a transverse direction across the grain so that it can be bent on the scores to form the carton. By bending this strip of veneer on the scores an end section 1 is provided which i's to form the center partition of the carton and the outer edge thereof is provided with a plurality of notches 2. The adj acent section 3 is bent at right angles to form the bottom of one row of cells adapted to be formed within the receptacle. Bent at right angles to the section 3 and adapted to extend parallel to the partition 1 is a section 4 and the adjacent section 5 is adapted to overlap the section 4 as better shown in Figs. 3 and 4 to form the front wall of the carton. The section 6 forms the bottom of the carton whereas the section 7 forms the rear wall and the section 8 forms the top for the carton. The opposite end section 9- is adapted to form the interlocking flap which is adapted to be inserted within the box and the front of the wall 4. This wall 4 is provided with a pair of elongated slots 10 which are for the reception of the flaps 11 formed 'within the section 9. By roviding the slots 10 and the flaps 11 it will at once be conceived that this was a looking means for retaining the carton in its folded position or this looks as if it would strengthen the carton, but it is detrimental as it weakens the veneer and is used only as an illustration how the cover may be locked in closed position.

The ends of each filler section are provided with the walls or'sections 15 which are connected at one end to the side partitions 14 and ytheir opposite ends are connected by means of the single opposite side section 16. The lower edges of the Sections 12, 13 and 15 are notched as at 17 lso as to be interlocked with the notches 2 formed within the central longitudinal artition 1.v The front wall of the carton wllen folded has a tendency to swing outwardly when the filler isnot placed in position thereby leaving a sliht space between the Sections 4 and 5 but t e weight of the eggs resting u on the section 3 will have a tendency to pu the sections 4 and 5 inwardly so that they will be held in substantially a Vertical position.

f When the filler is placed within the carton it will provide a locking means for` retaining theksame more securely in a folded position and it is tobe noted that the carton togethn with its filler comprise only three sheets of veneer and does not need any stitches, stales or other fastening elements for retain- 1n the same in folded Position.

n Fi. 6 of the drawings the extreme outer en s of the Sections 12 and '13" of the filler are bent inwardly as at 17 and rest against the side section 16' so as to form a looking connection. In the modified form of the filler as shown in Figs. 7 and 8 the extremities of the Sections 12' and 13' are bent toward the opposite sections to which they are connected and the extremities are notched so as to form an interlocking connection. The extremity 18 is notched within its lower edge as alt 19 whereas the extremity 20 of the section 13' is notched Within its upper edge for receiving the not`ch within the extremity 18 for forming this interlocking connection.

Havin thus fully described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
