Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMRY DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to inkstands of the class shown, described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent No. 399,8l4 granted to me March 19, 1889; No. 418,390 granted to me October 22, 1889, and No. 605,177 granted to me June 7 1898; and the object of this invention is to improve the construction of inkstands of the class shown and described in said patents so as to facilitate the operation thereof, prevent the evaporation of ink, prevent the ink from flowing out if the inkstand is upset, and provide means whereby the inkstand, or the various parts thereof, may be quickly and easily cleaned when necessary; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in an inkstand of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol: lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in 1 each of the views, and in which Figure l is a central vertical section of my improved inkstand and showing the same ready for use; and,
Fig. 2 a similar view showing the method or operation of inking a pen.
My improved inkstand comprises, in the form of construction shown, a well member a, a main float b, a supplemental float c, and a detachable collar d placed within the top of the well member a.
The well member a comprises a main central cylindrical body portion having an enlarged base or bottom a and an enlarged top a in which is a conical recess a through which the main float b is vertically movable and in the enlarged top a is a rabbet groove a in which the collar (1 is placed. 7

and said parts also form below the collar d a similar annular recess a The well member a is preferably composed of glass while the main float b, supplemental float c and collar (Z are preferably composed of hard rubber.
The main float b is hollow and cylindrical in form and open at the bottom and the outer transverse dimensions thereof are only slightly smaller than the inner transverse dimensions of the main reservoir on in the well member a, and the outer transverse dimensions of the main float b are also only slightly less than the inner diameter of the collar d, these differences being such only as to permit of the free vertical movement of the main float b.
The main float Z) is closed at the top and provided with a conical recess 6 formed by a conical downwardly directed shell integral with, or connected with, the top of the mainfloat member and at the bottom of which is a downwardly directed tubular sleeve 6* which is also open at the bottom and which extends, in the form of construction shown, slightly below the body of the main float b, as shown at 6 At the top of the tubular sleeve b forming a communication between the interior of said sleeve and the conical recess 6 in the top of the main float b is a port 6 below which is an annular shoulder 6 and the supplemental float c is provided with a head 0 which serves as a valve to close the port I).

and the pen is inked, and when said pen is withdrawn the float 7) rises and the ink flows back into the bottom of the well through the tube 6", after which the float 0 rises and closes the port b It will be understood that the pin 6 limits the downward movement of'the float c and in the above described operation the pressure of the ink in the tube 1) on the'bottom annular head 0 of the float 0 holds said floatc down until the main float scribed'as floats and the part 0 as a float valve, the operation of the part b is that of a floatingplunger, and it is this floating plunger and its operation, as descr bed, that controls the operation of the entire device.
When the inkstand is not in use, or'there s no ink in the well member, the bottom of the float b, or the sleeve member b thereof rests onthe bottom of the well, and'the top of the float bis at the point h, or at'the bottom of the annular'recessa and these comparative vertlcal dimensions of the float I) able length of time, in which event the ink and the .well member a, the inner walls the lower end portion of the float for at least one-half of its vertlc-al dimensions 7 must closely fit the walls of the well in order to control the flow of ink as hereinafter described, but not so close as to retard the free vertical movement of the float, nor so loose that the film of ink between the float and inner walls of the well will not beheld by capillary attraction to preventthe free. flow of ink between the float and inner walls of the well when the float isbeing depressed; and with these dimensions, the'top .ofthe float b, when the deviceis in use, will always be above the well, orthe point it which indicates the top of the well. i
In the ordinary use of this device theink will not rise into the annular recess a nor into the annular recess a but by'misuse or carelessness the ink may be forced-to rise into these recesses or spaces but will flow back again when the main float b rises, and all the parts are so adjusted and fit in such manner that the ink will not flow out of the well if the entire device be upset or" turned over, unless it be retainedor remain in such upset or turned over position for a considerwill'gradually flow out into and through the annular recesses or spaces a and a From theforegoing description it will be seen that the air is almost, if not entirely, excluded from the ink when the device is not 1-00 in use, and while I have shown and described the sleeve' 6 as extending below the bottom of the body of-the' main float 6-, this is not absolutely necessary, but isdone principally to provide for the remov-al and in- 'sertion of the pin 6 and-the collar d is also not absolutely essential and may ormay not be employed, and my invention is also not limited to any particular shape, design or form of the well a, and changes in and mod-iflcationsof the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
It is not absolutely necessary that; the float Z) be'open at the bottom nor is it absolutely necessary that the float c be open at the bottom but the tube must be open at thefbottom, the objectof making the top head c of'the float 0 smaller than the bottom head 0 thereof, or the annular shoulder or en-. largement at the bottom of saiclfloat-is "to permit of the free backward flow of the ink around the flo-at c, and in this operation the" ink strikes the annular shoulder or head 0 at the bottom or thefloat c and holds said float down until the float hascompleted or partially completed its upward movement. 7

what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An inkstand comprising a well member having a cylindrical reservoir therein, a
main cylindrical hollow float vertically movable in said reservoir and provided in the top thereof with a conical recess in the bottom of which is a port, the walls of said conical recess being provided with a tubular sleevewhich extends downwardly through the body portion of the main float and in which is mounted a hollow tubular supplemental fioat open at the bottom and provided at the top with a head adapted to close said port, said well member being also provided with an enlarged top in which is a conical recess through which the main float is vertically movable and in which is placed an annular detachable collar.
2. In an inkstand of the class described, a well member having a cylindrical reservoir open at the top, a main cylindrical float vertically movable in said reservoir and provided in the top thereof with a conical recess at the bottom of which is a port and below which is a tube or bore extending downwardly through said main float and in which is placed a supplemental vertically movable float adapted to close said port the bottom of which is provided with an enlarged annular head.
3. In an inkstand, a main body part having an inner cylindrical well, a cylindrical hollow plunger float closely fitting in said well and vertically movable therein and provided at the top thereof with a recess at the bottom of which is a port, the walls of said recess being provided with a sleeve which extends downwardly through said float, the vertical dimensions of the float and the depth of the well being approximately the same, a cylindrical valve mounted in said sleeve and adapted to close said port and the bottom of which is provided with an annular enlargement.

In an inkstand, a main body part having an inner cylindrical well, a cylindrical hollow plunger float closely fitting in said well and vertically movable therein and provided at the to thereof with a recess at the bottom of whic 1 is a port, the walls of said recess being provided with a sleeve which extends downwardly through said float, the vertical dimensions of the float and the depth of the well being approximately the same, a cylindrical valve mounted in said sleeve and adapted to close said port and the bottom of which is provided with an annular enlargement, and said sleeve being provided at the bottom thereof with detachable means for retaining the valve there- 1n.
