To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known that LEE S. BURRIDGE, de ceased, late a citizen of the United States, and late residing. in the borough of Manhattan, county, city, and State of New York, in,- vented certain new and useful Improve ments in Type-VVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the line-spacing mechanism of typewriting machines, and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive mechanism which shall be of very light weight and extremely compact as well as durable, so as to be suitable for use in typewriters of the portable class.
The platen frame or carriage of the typewriter may be made of sheet metal, and may comprise an end plate, and the linespace mechanism may be compactly mounted upon the inner and outer sides of said end plate; the line-spacing parts being made preferably all of sheet metal and compactly assembled.- a
v The line-space lever may have a fingerpiece to, cooperate with a finger-piece formed upon the end plate of the platen frame, so that by pinching one finger-piece toward the other, the line-spacing of the platen will be efiected, and at the same time the operator will be given a grip upon the platen frame or carriage, for returning the same to begin a new line of writing? These finger-pieces are located at the upper portion of the device, for ready access; and thereforethelever may be pivoted at the bottom of the end plate, and may be connected by an upwardly-extending link to I a bell-crank mounted upon the platen axle,

essential in this class of machines.-
The. line-space regulator is simple, compact and. efi'ective, and is preferably controlled by the samespring which returns the line-space lever to normal position. The throw-off lever for disconnecting the 5 ringdetent from the line-space' ratchet w eel is so formed as to be convenient of access and to clear the other parts of the mechanism, without sacrificing compactness.

1. The combination with a platen, a platen frame, and a line-space wheel, of a lever pivoted upon the platen frame and comprising an arm which extends upwardly and carries a finger-piece at its upper end, said lever also having a rearwardly-extending arm, an up-and-down moving link extendingupwardly from said rearwardly extending: arni, a bell-crank mounted on the platen frame-and com 'risin an u and-down movh said bell-crank.
2. The combination with a platen, a platen frame,'and a line-space wheel, of a lever platen frame and extend ing upwardly and carrying a finger-piece at-its upper end, said lever having a rearwardly-extendin'g' arm, a linh extending upwardly from said arm, a bell-crank mounted concentrically with the platen and comprising anarm attached to said link. and a linespacing pawl pivoted on the other arm of said bcll-cranlgsaid platen-frame comprisinq a plate upon the outer side of which said lever is pivoted, and said bellcrank arranged on the inner side of said plate and having a wrist extending through said plate to be engaged by said link.
3. The combination with a platen, a platen frame, and a line-space wheel, of a pivoted arm, a pawl upon said arm, a toe projecting from said pawl, a spring for returning said arm, said arm holding said toe against a fixture, to hold the pawl clear of the linespace wheel, and a stop in the path of said toe to be engaged thereby at the conclusion of the driving of the platen, to lock the pawl into the line-space wheel.
4. The combination with a platen, a platen frame, and a line-space wheel, of an arm pivoted to swing around the platen axis, a lever for driving said arm, a pawl upon said arm, a toe upon said pawl, a spring for returning said arm, said arm holding said toe against a fixture, to hold the pawl clear of the line-space wheel, and a stop engageable by said toe at the conclusion of the driving of the platen, to lock the pawl into the line-space wheel, said stopbeing adjustable out of the path of said toe, and a second stop being. provided in the path of said toe to arrest the platen at the conclu-' sion of a longer stroke thereof, and also to lock the pawl in engagement with the linespace wheel.
5 The combination with a platen, a platen frame, and a line-space wheel, of an arm pivoted to. swing around the platen axis, a lever for driving said arm, a pawl upon said arm, a toe upon said pawl, a spring for returning said arm, said arm holding said toeagainst a fixture, to hold the pawl clear of the line-space wheel, a stop engageable by said toe at the conclusion ofthe driving of the platen, to lock the pawl into the line- 'space wheel, said stop being adjustable out of the path of said toe, a second stop being provided in the path of said toe to arrest the platen at the conclusion of a longer stroke thereof, and also to lock the pawl in engagement with the line-space wheel, said 'mo'vable stop being pivoted upon the platen frame,'and a draw spring to hold said movable stop in either of its positions, said platen-driving "lever being mounted upon the platen frame, and said draw spring besame.

8. The combination with a platen, a platen frame, and a line-space wheel, of a lever pivoted upon the platen frame and'extending upwardly and carrying a finger-pieceat its upper end, said lever having a rearwardly-extending arm, a link extending 1ipside of said plate, and having a stud projeeting through said plate to be cammed by said cam lever.
