side of engine cab or street car or automobile windows.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which is adapted to be installed on a window and which can be readily and conveniently-manually operated.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter escribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a window provided with cleanin devicesconstructed and arranged in accor ance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an elevation showing a modified arrangement.
For the purposes of this specification the frame of a window is indicated at 1 and the glass pane at 2. In accordance with my invention I provide a pair of vertically arranged guide rails 3 at each side of the window frame, one rail of each pair being arranged on the outer side and the other rail being arranged on the inner side of the window. The rails are in practice preferably strips of suitable sheet metal and are preferably secured in place by means of screws 4. In the upper and lower sides of the frame, near the corners, are pulleys 5 which are arranged in recesses or notches 6 in the window frame and are mounted for rotation on suitable supporting axles 7.
I also provide a pair of cleaning devices a, b which are arranged respectively on the inner and outer sides of the window. Each cleaning device comprises a rubbin and scraping member 8 which is prefera 1y an oblong rectangular sheet of rubber of suitable dimensions but which may be made of any suitable material. The cleaning member is cross-sectionally angular as shown so that the intermediate ortion 9 thereof is spaced from the glass pane and the sides 10 thereof are caused to bear against the glass pane. The cleaning. element is secured by suitable securing devices 11 to a cover and stiifening member 12 which is. preferably made of sheet metal and which is also crosssectionally angular so that the cleaning element is held in the required position and in the required relation to the cover. The ends of the cover are provided with runners 13 which are arranged at opposite sides of the window and engage between the glass pane and the guide rail as shown. Each runner has a groove 13 in its outer side and each guide rail has an inwardly turned flange 3 which engages in said groove. The runners of the inner and outer cleaning devices are connected together by chains 14 which pass over the pulleys so that the cleaning devices are connected together for simultaneous movement. The inside cleaning device is provided with finger-grips 15 which may be conveniently grasped. It will be understood that by moving the inside cleaning device vertically the cleaning member thereof will thoroughly rub, scrape and clean the inner' surface of the pane and it will be also understood that by reason of the connections hereinbefore described between the inside and outside cleaners, the said outside cleaner will be operated simultaneously with the inside cleaner so that both sides of the pane will be cleaned.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings I show a modified arrangement in which the window frame is provided with two panes 2 separated by a'bar 2 and a pair of the cleaning devices is provided for each pane, the runners at the opposing ends of the cleaning devices engaging and being guided by metal guide rails 3 While I have herein described and shown a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the cope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim a In a Window cleaner of the class described, the combination of a pair of guide 5 rails adapted to be secured to the opposite sides of a Window frame, each having a guide flange to extend toward and overhang the margin of the glass pane, a cleaning de-= vice adapted to extend across the pane and comprising a runner at each' end having a 10 groove in its outer side, the runner sliding between the glass pane and the guide rails with said flanges in said grooves.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ALFRED GIBSON.
